Since Kevin Spirtas left his role after a seven and a half year run as Dr. Craig Wesley on Days of our Lives, let’s just say the actor has been working non-stop. One of his most recent accomplishments was being able to fulfill a dream of putting his life on record along with some of the greatest tunes.
Spirtas, who has been touring the country in a one man show, saying, “there is no greater feeling than meeting the fans,” has decided to put his show along with his story and music on his first full length CD for all to hear and enjoy.
The CD titled “Night and Days” is his journey from the Broadway stage to screen and back to Broadway as a standby for Hugh Jackman in “The Boy from Oz.” He also talks about the many roles that got away, like the role of Peter Allen in “The Boy From Oz.” Spirtas hinted that since he didn’t get to do the role on Broadway, he incorporated it into his one man show.
“The title ‘Night and Days’, is about my nights on Broadway, and my days on Days of our Lives,” Spirtas said. “The CD tells the story of how I debuted on the Broadway stage in “A Chorus Line,” to how I got my first film break in “Friday the 13th PT.7” and “The Hills Have Eyes PT.2.” The CD basically tells my road to Hollywood. It’s my journey of growing up, and leaving behind my home in Missouri, and following my dream.”
Spirtas always loved to sing, and said that he basically grew up singing. It was his fourth grade teacher, Joanne Smiley that encouraged him on pursuing a musical career.
The CD “Night and Days” came about after much thought. It was his fans and colleagues that persuaded him to make the CD. The CD with personally selected material and songs containing everything from classic musical theater, to popular show tunes, mixed with a little bit of rock and roll like “Jailhouse Rock,” and a parody from Les Miserables. Songs include, “Night and Day,” as an opening number, and “Sometimes a Day Goes By.” (The recording is of Spirtas’ one-man show in its entirety, October 24, 2005, at the El Portal Theater / Los Angeles.)
“Like I said, I love to sing. Everyone kept saying record, record, record, so I thought...why not?” Spirtas said. “I thought about what people would like to see me sing and do, and I did it.”
Spirtas is no newcomer to the entertainment business. Having been in the business professionally for 25 years, he finds that versatility is the key to success.
“I love to work and create. I love different projects and enjoy diving into different venues,” Spirtas explained. “You need to be versatile. Hugh Jackman is incredible. He’s versatile. I’d love to carve my path next to his.”
Spirtas said that being versatile means “doing it all.” He explained that live theatre is a different muscle. You do the best you can, and it’s the response from the audience that is your guide. With theatre, you’re on a fast track. Film is a specific medium. You focus on one scene at a time. You create it until it is perfect, and TV is just a fun medium that allows you to be creative.
Speaking of musical theatre, Spirtas is currently starring now thru February 07 iat the Luxor Hotel n Las Vegas in “Hair Spray,” playing Corny Collins -- a role he auditioned for and won. The show is a new version for an hour and a half. He is doing eight shows a week and loving every minute of it. After that gig, he will continue to tour the country with his one man show.
Soapdom asked about a return to Days of our Lives? “You know...I’m open to the idea. I had a great time. I miss the people, and it was just fun. As for the fans...I’m here because of their support. I thank them. I love what I do, and when people are there to receive it, it’s all the more fulfilling.”
In his spare time, Spirtas enjoys going to the mountains, snow boarding, and water skiing. He enjoys getting back occasionally to Missouri, but said, “It’s a different life back there.”
