Ship Ahoy! B&B star takes to the seas in Italian feature.

B&B's Loss is the Film Word's Gain

When Sean Kanan exited his role as Deacon Sharpe a few months ago on The Bold and The Beautiful, he went right into the lead role in “Sons of Italy,” a film currently being shot on the Isle of Capri and on the Almalfi Coast in Italy.

Kanan plays Michele Morri, an Italian native Sea Captain. The film unfolds the backdrop of a real life terrorist attack that took place on an Italian merchant marine vessel off the coast of Algeria in the mid 1990’s.

“Would you believe it!  Me a Sea Captain?” Kanan said. “When I saw the script, I didn’t know what to think, but I will tell you that when I got the part, I was truly flattered.”

Kanan said he is taking this role very seriously, and can hardly wait to get into it. He submitted a tape to the producers, but first hired an acting coach and a dialog coach to get everything down pat and learn his Italian and their mannerisms.

“I put in a lot of work into my resume tape,” Kanan revealed. “I believe that when you try out for a role, you need to be fully prepared and put your versatility as an actor to the test.”

“Sons of Italy” had extensive casting in Los Angeles and New York for Ciro Moriello and Jonathan Rola’s -- the producers -- feature film. But Kanan said that for whatever reason he was picked, he will give it his best shot. And since part of the film will be shot on a vessel, he is looking forward to the challenge that lies ahead. As of this writing, Kanan was still in the dark regarding some of the specifics, but that’s just fine with him. He really doesn’t want to know all the details. He wants to be surprised.

“Oh yea! Hey...lets face it. It’s not a soundstage,” Kanan joked. “I will be out there in the water and God only knows what’s in the future.”

“Sons of Italy” is the first film in which he plays a lead role that he isn’t directing. Also, this is the first film where he is a truly normal character.

“I’ve always been the psychopath character,” Kanan said. Look at the dark side that Deacon had on The Bold and the Beautiful.  “I’m always that love-to-hate-character, so this will be a first.”

The film is a real love story between Kanan and an Algerian girl that he rescues and takes back to Italy, but the love story will have a tragic ending. Kanan declined saying what, but hinted, “It’s not pretty.”

“Son’s of Italy” will be shopped around at various film festivals looking for distribution, but Kanan said that when you see this film, it’s so well written, directed, and produced, he only sees a bright future for the film. There is a healthy budget, and Kanan is looking forward to his attire. “It’s a switch. A Sea Captain? C’mon!”

Kanan said that he will have a grand time in Italy. He is no stranger, and has  done some modeling and promotion work in Milan before and he and loves the country.

“Oh without a doubt. It’s a smaller country with a lot of history,” Kanan said. “Italy has a common language, and strong religious background. It’s not the melting pot of the world, and I just love the old world flair.”

Kanan also recently completed a starring role in “Carpool Guy,” a project conceived and directed by Corbin Bernson (Durant, GH), and hopes to have success and be able to continue to do more films.

“I’d love to do another film. It’s so much fun,” Kanan said. “It’s no secret, that every actor acting wants to do films.”

Kanan believes that in the entertainment business you never rule out anything, and in reality, you don’t know what you will be doing next.

Soapdom wants to know, how did you feel about being let go from The Bold and the Beautiful, and would you return to soaps? “I must be honest. I hold no regrets from The Bold and the Beautiful. It’s the business. I have the utmost respect for those folks from actors to crew,” Kanan said. “As for a return to soaps? Like I said, you never rule out anything. We will wait and see.”

Kanan admitted that he loves and prefers film making to soaps because of the better quality and better results of film verses video. And he likes having the one character in film, as opposed to soaps where the characters become twisted in new plots every week, but he does miss the speed and energy that daytime TV offers.

When “Sons of Italy” wraps filming, Kanan will head back to Los Angeles and as he put it, “Hit the job circuit again, and look to explore different opportunities that are out there.”
