ABC gets a pink ribbon, NBC #1 for the year & Men get their say

Dear Suds Buds:

How are you all enjoying your shows these days? Are your expectations being met? Are your favorite couples together or fighting their way back to each other? Or, are they paired with unlikely substitutes that have you climbing the walls? Are your favorite storylines taking forever to play out, or are the moving along at a reasonable clip? Let us know your thoughts on the Turtle-Run Message Boards.

Speaking of which, within the next two weeks or so, Turtle-Run's message boards may be down for a day or so. They are in need of a long overdue tweaking. Stay tuned to this column for the heads up on when they will be out of commission. It shouldn't be more than a day or so. But, then!  When they get back online, they will be far better and without those interfering pop up ads! YAY! So, please stick with us as we make these tweaks.

And now, on with the world of soaps!

ABC Daytime and Johnson & Johnson Partner for On-Air Campaign to Build Awareness of Breast Cancer

ABC Daytime has partnered with Personal Products Company and Johnson & Johnson Consumer Products Company, both Johnson & Johnson companies, to create an on-air promotional partnership campaign, "Show Her That You Care," to build awareness for breast cancer. The campaign, which features top ABC Daytime talent, is designed to educate women about the importance of early detection and encourages women to perform monthly breast self-exams by offering free breast self-exam tip cards.

Beginning this week, Eva La Rue Callahan (Maria, AMC), Leslie Charleson (Monica, GH) and Erika Slezak (Viki, OLTL) will each be featured in a 20-second promotional spot delivering breast cancer awareness facts.

The spots include a voice-over message directing consumers to go to their local retailers to find out how to get a breast cancer self-exam tip card. Additionally, ABC Daytime show logos and a tune-in message will be featured in off-air support vehicles, including a Sunday newspaper coupon insert dropping on September 29, 2002, and in-store displays. The campaign will reach over 50-million women nationwide.

Both Leslie Charlson's character on General Hospital and Erika Slezak's character on One Life to Live are breast cancer survivors. The spots run through October 11 on ABC Daytime.

NBC Daytime Wins the Broadcast Year in Women 18-49

For the first time in NBC records, the Peacock's daytime lineup wins the year outright. NBC is the only network up vs. last year among women 18-49. "Days of our Lives" is #1 for the broadcast year among women 18-49 and 18-34, and the only daytime series up year-to-year in the 18-49 race. "Passions" is #2 for the year among women 18-34. For the week, NBC is up 25 percent year-to-year and scores its 27th win in a row among women 18-49! What follows are some interesting statistics. Here's how it plays out:

NBC's two-hour daytime lineup has completed the 2001-02 broadcast year #1 among women 18-49, marking the network's first outright victory on record in daytime's key demographic. Only once before in NBC records has the network earned a share of the daytime lead in this category, when NBC tied ABC for first place during the 2000-01 broadcast year.

NBC is the only network up year-to-year among women 18-49, while "Days of our Lives," #1 in that category, is the only network daytime series to post year-to-year gains. NBC's "Passions" matched its year-ago results among women 18-49 and 18-34 and is the #2 program for the season among women 18-34.

During the 2001-02 season, NBC's daytime lineup averaged a women 18-49 delivery of 1.4 million viewers, the network's highest average in three years.

According to in-home viewing figures from Nielsen Media Research, daytime averages among women 18-49 for the 2001-02 broadcast year are: NBC, 2.2 rating, 15 share (matching the network's average for the previous year); ABC, 2.1/14 (down 5 percent); CBS, 1.9/13 (down 10 percent). NBC has finished ahead of ABC on this list for the first time in NBC records dating back to the 1980-81 season. Season-long women 18-34 averages are: NBC, 2.8/18 (down 3 percent); ABC, 1.7/12 (down 6 percent); CBS. 1.6/11 (down 16 percent).

Note that NBC broadcasts two hours a day of daytime programming while ABC and CBS air four-and-a-half hours each.

"Days of our Lives" has finished the year #1 among women 18-49, averaging a 2.8/18 among women 18-49 (up 4 percent). # 2 is ABC's "General Hospital" (2.6/17, down 4 percent). Among women 18-34, "Days" (3.5/22, even) is a runaway #1 for the season, while "Passions" (2.2/14, even) took second ahead of CBS's "Young and the Restless" (2.1/15, down 12 percent) and ABC's "General Hospital" (2.1/13, down 9 percent).

NBC wrapped up its triumphant 2001-02 broadcast year with a women 18-49 victory for the September 16-20 week, the network's 27th consecutive win (including a tie). NBC hasn't lost a daytime week since March 11-15. The 27-week winning streak is NBC's longest in the 15-season history of the current People Meter sample at Nielsen Media Research.

Daytime averages among women 18-49 for the September 16-20 week are: NBC, 2.5/16 (up 25 percent over results for the same week last year); ABC, 2.4/16 (up 4 percent); CBS, 1.8/12 (down 10 percent). Among women 18-34, averages are: NBC, 3.3/20 (up 38 percent); ABC, 2.1/13 (up 17 percent); CBS, 1.4/9 (down 18 percent). Overall total viewer averages for the week are: CBS, 4.8 million (down 7 percent); ABC, 3.7 million (down 5 percent); NBC, 3.7 million (up 17 percent).

For the week, "Days of our Lives" (2.9/18 among women 18-49, up 21 percent; 3.7/22 among women 18-34, up 23 percent) and "Passions" (2.1/14 among women 18-49, up 31 percent; 2.9/18 among women 18-34, up 45 percent) posted powerful gains over their comparable year-ago results.
