GL & AMC celebrate, DOOL is People's Choice & Star sightings

Dear Suds Buds!

January 2002 is quite an illustrious one for soapdom. "Guiding Light" celebrates its 65th broadcast anniversary on Friday, January 25, 2002, and "All My Children" celebrated it's 32nd anniversary on January 5, 2002. That means that when AMC debuted, "Guiding Light" was already on the air (in a combination of radio and television broadcasts) for 33 years! Who said soaps were a dying genre? Congratulations to "Guiding Light" and "All My Children" for celebrating monumental anniversaries this year. Congrats also go out to DOOL who won their third People's Choice award in a row! For all the rad details, my cyber Suds Buds, read on...

Third People's Choice Win for DOOL!

For the third consecutive time, "Days of our Lives" was named Favorite Daytime Dramatic Television Series at the Twenty-Eighth Annual People's Choice Awards, which was broadcast live on the CBS Television Network on Sunday evening, January 13, 2002. Deidre Hall and Executive Producer Ken Corday accepted the coveted award at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium and were joined on stage by cast members Alison Sweeney, Austin Peck, Renee Jones, Matthew Ashford, Melissa Reeves, Matt Cedeno, Suzanne Rogers, Kevin Spirtas, Patrika Darbo, Lauren Koslow, Nadia Bjorlin, Kyle Lowder, Julianne Morris, Arianne Zuker, Farah Fath, Kirsten Storms and members of the producing team.

In her acceptance speech, Deidre Hall jokingly thanked Julia Roberts, "Days of our Lives'" number one fan, for voting six times. Prior to announcing the winner in the Daytime Dramatic Television Series category, Julia had just been named Favorite Motion Picture Actress and during her acceptance speech, Julia exuberantly declared her excitement over being seated directly in front of the "Days of our Lives" cast, a seating request made by Julia herself. Deidre then thanked the loyal fans for supporting the show and introduced Ken Corday as the person responsible for listening to the fans and giving them the show they want to watch. Ken Corday acknowledged the writers and the entire crew for producing 260 shows a year and over 9,200 shows total. Ken thanked his wife and children before poignantly paying tribute to his late parents, Ted and Betty Corday, who created the legacy that became "Days of our Lives" over 36 years ago. Ken graciously accepted the award on behalf of his parents.

Turtle-Run congratulates "Days of our Lives" for this amazing win! We joined the cast and crew on their soundstages on Friday, January 18, 2002 to share in the soap's lunch break celebration of their third People's Choice win. Stay tuned to Turtle-Run's Top of the Week next week (January 28, 2002) for the scoop on the party.

Kurth & Taylor do D.C.

The Food Research and Action Center (FRAC) presents an evening of food and music with GeneralHospital star and singer Wally Kurth (Ned) when he performs with the Kurth & Taylor Band at the Birchmere on Sunday, February 10, 2002.

Although best known for his role as charming Ned Ashton on GeneralHospital, the multi-talented Kurth plays acoustic guitar and shares lead vocals with Christian Taylor in their band, Kurth & Taylor. Their music has been acclaimed by Billboard Magazine as "engaging" with a sound "which will warm the heart." Kurth and Taylor began playing in Los Angeles coffeehouses nine years ago, and their group has grown to include three other musicians. They have performed in clubs, at major festivals and on television shows like "Regis and Kathie Lee," and TNN's "This Week in Country Music." The band also performs as Eddie Maine and the Idle Rich on GH. In addition, Kurth & Taylor have recorded 4 CDs.

At this benefit performance, an auction of GH memorabilia and a tour of the GH set guided by "Eddie Maine" himself, will be held during the concert intermission. FRAC has been working to end hunger in this country. The Kurth and Taylor Foundation creates and supports programs that provide direct health and education services for children, youth and their families. To date, the foundation has donated hundreds of thousands of dollars to children's initiatives, including pediatric AIDS organizations, Operation Smile, and Mattel Children's Hospital.

So, everyone in the Washington, D.C. area get on out and get down with Kurth & Taylor and help them continue to contribute to these worthy causes. The Birchmere is located on Mount Vernon Avenue in Alexandria, VA. Call 202 986-2200 for ticket prices, sponsorships and other information.

Guiding Light Turns 65!

"Guiding Light," the longest-running daily program in broadcast history, marks its 65th year when the daytime drama airs its 16,293rd episode on January 25, 2002. Known as "The Guiding Light" when the fifteen-minute series premiered on radio in 1937, the show will also celebrate its 50th anniversary on television on June 30, 2002.  Created by Irna Phillips, "Guiding Light" was -- and continues to be -- produced by Procter & Gamble Productions, the company who put the "soap" in soap opera.

Over the past six decades, "Guiding Light" has led its counterparts in daytime and prime time drama in exploring a range of topical and timeless issues. Beginning in 1962, the series tackled it's -- and daytime's -- first social issue-driven storyline: the early detection of Bert Bauer's uterine cancer via a Pap smear. Since then, subjects addressed have ranged from organ transplant to Down's syndrome, substance abuse to domestic violence, birth control to adoption, and leukemia to cochlear implants. Of course, love, romance, family and community have always been at the core of the program.

On radio as well as television, "Guiding Light" has continually captured the hearts and minds of viewers with compelling storylines and enduring characters. Currently, the always adventurous Reva Shayne (played by three-time Emmy winner Kim Zimmer) is reclaiming the love of her life, Josh Lewis (Robert Newman), after an unconventional journey through time; friends Dr. Rick Bauer (Michael O'Leary) and detective Harley Cooper (Beth Ehlers) are considering marriage following the birth of their son, despite their attractions to others; the wealthy Phillip Spaulding (Grant Aleksander) is rediscovering love with his ex-wife, Beth Raines, unaware that she's actually grifter Lorelei Hills (both played by Beth Chamberlin); and San Cristobel President Richard Winslow (Bradley Cole) and his wife Cassie (Laura Wright) are the unwitting pawns in a plot to restore the island's monarchy to the rightful heir.

On "Guiding Light," audiences also got their very first look at many now-famous faces, such as Kevin Bacon, Tammy Blanchard (Me and My Shadows: The Judy Garland Story), Ruby Dee, Taye Diggs, Frances Fisher, Allison Janney, James Earl Jones, Melina Kanakaredes, Sherry Stringfield, Cicely Tyson, Cynthia Watros (Titus), Billy Dee Williams, JoBeth Williams, and Ian Ziering, to name a few.

"Guiding Light" is the only daytime program inducted into the Soap Opera Hall of Fame. The program has been the recipient of 54 Daytime Emmy Awards as well as numerous other industry accolades.

Turôle-Run congratulates "Guiding Light" on its stunning history and heritage. Happy Birthday, GL!

Shemar Moore Departs Y&R as 2 Cast Members Get Engaged

Yes, it's true. After quite a successful stint in GenoaCity, Shemar Moore (Malcolm) is bidding adieu to the Young & the Restless.  January 11, 2002 was Moore' s final tape date, and set siders gave him a brief send-off. In a touching moment Moore took the spotlight and shared his feelings about Y&R and his future.

"I was born and raised on this show," he confided to fellow castmates, crew, and producers. "Whether you knew it or not, you watched me grow up as an actor and more importantly, you gave me the chance to grow up and figure out who I was as a man." Moore continued by saying that it wasn't the Emmy's, it wasn't the fancy cars, or Soul Train, or the autographs, it's the fact that he can look in the mirror and be proud of who he is as a man. "This place is family," he said. "I appreciate all of you, and I'm going to miss you like nobody's business. So thank you for eight years of my life."

Moore joined Y&R in 1994. His final airdate is Thursday, February 14, 2002. As he trails off into the sunset, congratulations go out to Alexis Thorpe (Rianna) and David Lago (Raul) who got engaged over the holiday hiatus. No wedding date has been set.

And in more Y&R News...

Nancy Wiard has been promoted to a producer on Y&R. She served as Senior Coordinating Producer since 1999. Prior to that, she was coordinating producer since 1989, associate of the producer of the series from 1986-89, senior editor, CBS daytime program practices from 1981-86. In 1978 she was named associate producer and script supervisor. (AKA Cameron Mathison!) Also on the docket, Frank repeatedly tries to return a dead body to its rightful precinct.
