Hi Suds Buds,
Lots to share with you this week in the world of soaps, so without further ado, let's do! :o)
Passions Renewed for 4th Year!
OnJanuary 9, 2002 NBC renewed its popular daytime drama "Passions" for a fourth season. The renewal was announced by Jeff Zucker, President, NBC Entertainment.
Just in case you didn't know...
During its three years on the air, "Passions" has revolutionized the daytime genre with unparalleled ratings growth, ground-breaking special effects, and critical acclaim from TV Guide (Best Soap 1999 and 2000), Entertainment Weekly ("...comedy, drama, camp classic, soap send-up, 'Passions' works."), and USA Today ("...has a gift for head-turning plots.").
In addition to the announcement of the serial's renewal, many of the show's original cast members have extended their contracts prior to the expiration of their current deals. Among those stars who have recommitted to the show so far are Emmy Award winning actress Juliet Mills (Tabitha), McKenzie Westmore (Sheridan) (2001 Soap Opera Digest Award winner for Outstanding Heroine), Lindsay Korman (Theresa), James Hyde (Sam), Kim Johnston Ulrich (Ivy), Brook Kerr (Whitney), and Jesse Metcalfe (Miguel). All of who have created distinct and memorable characters that contributed to the creative success of the show.
During the week ending December 28, 2001, "Passions" beat its fourth-quarter ratings averages with a 1.7/9 among women 18-49 and a 2.0/12 among women 18-34. That 1.7 rating among women 18-49 put "Passions," the newest drama on the network daytime schedule, into a tie with CBS' "Guiding Light" (1.7/10), the oldest drama on the network daytime schedule.
"Passions" is also committed to extending and enhancing the viewers experience through cross-promotional ventures such as internet exclusive content on its official website, www.nbc.com/passions and the New York Times Best-Seller tie-in novel Hidden Passions: Secrets from the Diaries of Tabitha Lenox, which hit the stands in paperback on January 8, 2002 and rose to the top of the best seller lists in record time.
Turtle-Run.com would like to take this opportunity to congratulate "Passions" on getting renewed for a fourth season. We look forward to watching another exciting year ahead in the life and times of the denizens of Harmony!
The famed Mini-Series "Roots" with star GH's Lynne Moody now available on DVD
"Roots" -- the 1977 landmark Emmy-Award® winning television mini-series based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning book by Alex Haley -- makes its DVD debut January 15, 2002 with "Roots 25th Anniversary Edition," a three-disc DVD set. Winner of more than 145 awards, including nine Emmys, a Golden Globe, five Television Critics Circle Awards and the George F. Peabody Award, the Warner Home Video release has been digitally re-mastered for optimal video and audio presentation from the original elements.
Produced by David L. Wolper and Stan Margulies and originally broadcast in January 1977, "Roots: The Miniseries" was the highest-rated TV event of its day, seen by 130-million viewers (85% of all TV homes) during its initial U.S. telecasts. It is still the third highest-rated broadcast in TV history, and a quarter-century later remains vital and engrossing entertainment.
But why is this of interest to soap fans? Because Lynne Moody (Florence, GH) was one of the stars of "Roots," along with Louis Gossett, Jr. ("An Officer and a Gentleman,"), Edward Asner ("Lou Grant,"), Ben Vereen ("Pippin," "Tenspeed and Brownshoe"), and Leslie Uggams ("All MyChildren," "Harlem"). Also starring are LeVar Burton ("Star Trek X," "Star Trek: The Next Generation"), Maya Angelou ("How to Make an American Quilt,"), Lorne Greene ("Bonanza,"), George Hamilton ("Love at First Bite," "The Bold and the Beautiful"), and Cicely Tyson ("Fried Green Tomatoes," "A Lesson Before Dying"). Georg Stanford Brown, Burl Ives, Ian McShane, Richard Roundtree andO.J. Simpson are also featured.
The DVD boasts many extras, including extensive commentaries with David Wolper, Ed Asner, LeVar Burton, Leslie Uggams, Lynne Moody , Jon Amos, Georg Stanford Brown and other key members of the cast and creative team. Plus, video coverage of the recording sessions.
For those too young to remember, "Roots" details African-American life in the United States from the time of early slavery and is set against key events in U.S. history -- from the Revolutionary to the Civil Wars and eventual emancipation. The series begins with its main character, Kunta Kinte (Burton), being abducted from his African village, sold into slavery, and taken to this country where he refuses to accept his slave name of Toby. He makes several escape attempts but is finally caught and brutalized. He marries Bell (Madge Sinclair), his plantation's cook, and they have a daughter, Kizzy (Uggams), who is eventually sold away from them to a new master by whom she has a son. The boy grows up to become Chicken George (Vereen), a legendary cock fighter, who leads his family to freedom.

Letters to the Editor
"Can you please tell me the name of the song that Pilar sang to Antonio on Passions, and is it on CD?"Anon
The song was written especially for "Passions" by the show's music composer, John Henry, and composer/lyricist, Ali Olmo. It was sung as vocals only by both Pilar (Eva Tamargo Lemus) and Sheridan (McKenzie Westmore). It is not available for sale anywhere right now, but our friends at "Passions" say that they hope to one day put out a CD of "Passions" music, so stay tuned!
"My question is for "Days of Our Lives." I just want to know, will Chloe ever realize that she has feelings for Brady and will they ever become a couple?
Thank-you." Jo-Anna
Excellent question. Chloe is definitely conflicted. In my humble opinion, she has feelings for both Brady and Philip. She just has to decide which feelings are stronger. It may be a case of the writers just letting it play out for the time being to see which direction works best. They may not even know who Chloe will eventually end up with. But if you like Brady and Chloe, here is my advice. Write a postcard to Days at the snail mail address below, and let them know how you feel!
"I've been searching the web for updates on actor Alex Mendoza. I know he is no longer with Port Charles, last I read he was working the an independent film "Asylum Days." Do you have any further information on this actor and what his latest projects have been/will be? Any info is MUCH appreciated! SV
I haven't been able to find out much on "Asylum Days" other than C. Thomas Howell is listed as the star. The last project of record for Alex Mendoza is a TV movie called "Murder in the Mirror," which was released in 2000. We will keep our eyes and ears open, however, and if we learn of any new projects for Alex, we'll let you know!
"Does Bryan Datillo have his own website? I can't seem to find it! Help!" frenchie
Well, frenchie, we can't seem to find it either. Brian, if you're out there reading this, get yourself an official website soon! Your fans are eager to visit. :o)

"Can someone please tell me when the writers plan to quit the never ending close encounters between Sheridan and Luis (Passions). Do we have to wait until New Years 2003 for Sheridan and Luis to finally be together? Lexvia
"There has been much speculation on the internet message boards about the possible return of "Maria" to All My Children. Many people believe that IF AMC were to bring that character back, they'd also have to bring Dimitri back. I am very skeptical. I would be shocked and appalled if AMC decided to recast the role of Dimitri. That is one role that cannot successfully be recast. After they told Michael Nader that there is no storyline potential for the character, it would be a huge slap in the face to MN and his many fans for them to all of sudden "find" some material for a different actor.
I hope that IF AMC decides to bring back Dimitri...they use the wonderful actor who brought that character to life. Michael Nader created and perfected Dimitri and no other actor stands a chance of winning over the audience in that role. I miss Michael Nader's performance tremendously and would be thrilled to become a faithful viewer of any show that hires him....even (once again) AMC." M
