GH's Jacob Young in Toyota Grand Prix 2002
By Jessica Radloff
For the second year in a row, Turtle-Run is off to the races in support of daytime. This year's Toyota Pro/Celebrity Grand Prix Race in Long Beach, CA features only one daytime star, but he's one of soap's best and brightest: GeneralHospital's Jacob Young (Lucky).
Turtle-Run nabbed an exclusive interview with the star on Media Day in between practice runs. And don't worry if you can't attend the race on Saturday and/or Sunday, April 13-14, 2002, because TRO got all the inside scoop and gossip on Jacob and Lucky on Media Day just for you !
You might wonder how Jacob got interested in racing, considering that his many other talents seem to keep him busy 24/7. In fact, Jacob recently returned from a trip to Dallas where he has been working on his music. In between catching flights, Jacob has been training with the other celebrities in preparation for this year's race. Among his competitors: Star Trek's Patrick Stewart, NYPD Blue's Mark-Paul Gosselaar, the West Wing's Dule Hill, ER's Goran Visnjic, and WCW wrestling champ Bill Goldberg.
But before Jacob had time to socialize with his famous counterparts, he had to focus on learning the course and getting comfortable with maneuvering his racecar.
"I've been doing go-karts or shifter-carts when I'm not doing this or doing the show. We do it about four or five times a year. I've done it since I was 17, so I've been trying to get into this race for three years!"
Always one to poke fun at himself, Jacob added, "it's just really, really difficult because there's so many different celebrities that want to be a part of it, so obviously MY name was at the bottom of the list! No, but I finally got in and I'm here to dominate," he cracked.
Being the super soap star that he is, was there anyone in particular that Jacob was looking forward to meeting? "Patrick Stewart is one of my idols. I'm a huge ("StarTrek) Next Generation" fan and he's a really great actor."
Aside from preparing for the race, there was so much else to talk about. For one, how about being GH's only daytime Emmy nominee? "It feels good. This year, I feel like I put out a body of work that was worthy. I've been nominated one other time, but I didn't quite feel I earned it, like I do this year. I'm excited about it."
Ok, but let's talk about going up against "Bold & Beautiful's" Justin Torkildson, who took over the role of Rick from Jacob a few years back. How does it feel to be competing against the actor who plays a former role, a role Young created? "Like a piece of cake!" he says jokingly. "No, really, I'm very excited for him. He's a good guy. I've met him a couple of times."
As for his current storyline on GH, things couldn't be better. "I'm in a beautiful storyline right now. I'm working more than ever." So when is Lucky going to hook up with Elizabeth's sister, Sarah? Or have they already hooked up and Jacob just doesn't want to tell us? "Well, we are taping three weeks in advance, so . . . but I don't know what they're going to do. I mean, obviously, Lucky's got hormones and he can't seem to love Elizabeth because they're brainwashing things."
Aside from working hard and planning his trip to the Big Apple for the Emmys, Jacob is gearing up for a new film, called "Couples Counseling Killed Katie," a dark comedy about couples starring Billy Bob Thornton, David Schwimmer and Mel Brooks, among others. "I'm really excited. I mean, it's been my whole goal to break into film."
While Jacob anticipates exciting reviews when the film premieres at Sundance next year, he's just trying to enjoy his wave of good fortune. "Well, you know, that's what happens when you work really hard for what you want. I tell everybody, your dreams are only as big as you can fathom them. As long as you know they are possible and can turn them into actions, you'll be able to achieve them."
Thanks Jacob; we couldn't have said it better!
As the World Turns' Celebrated 46 Years on the Air on Tuesday, April 2, 2002
As reported in the last Top of the Week, Tuesday, April 2 marked the 46th anniversary and 11,725th episode of the daytime drama, "As the World Turns," a show which premiered the same year as another cultural icon, Elvis Presley, made his television debut. Still going strong, the long-running program has 17 Daytime Emmy Award nominations in 2002, including a nod for Outstanding Drama Series, which it won last year.
Created by Irna Phillips, "As the World Turns" premiered as a 30-minute live show, unprecedented at the time for a soap opera. Top-rated from 1959 to 1971, it was the first daytime serial with its own spin-off, "Our Private World," which aired in prime-time. Veteran cast members who still play integral characters on the program include Helen Wagner, who spoke the first words on the show, Eileen Fulton, Don Hastings, two-time Emmy winner Larry Bryggman, Kathryn Hays and Marie Masters, all of whom have been starring on "As the World Turns" for over 25 years.
Today, action in the Midwestern fictional town of Oakdale centers around Barbara Ryan's (Colleen Zenk Pinter) act of revenge against three women, Carly Tenney (Maura West), Emily Stewart (Kelley Menighan Hensley) and Rose D'Angelo (2001 Emmy winner Martha Byrne); Katie Frasier's (Terri Colombino) struggle to overcome her doubts about her husband, Simon's (Paul Leyden) role in his ex-wife's murder; and Abigail Williams' (Kristina Sisco) battle to recall what happened the night she allegedly killed Nick Scudder (Carl T. Evans).
Throughout its long history, "As the World Turns" has featured some of today's well-known Hollywood names before they were famous, including Jason Biggs, Jordana Brewster, Margaret Colin, Dana Delaney, William Fichtner, Grammy winner Lauryn Hill, James Earl Jones, Julianne Moore, Ming Na, Parker Posey, Meg Ryan, John Wesley Shipp, Oscar winner Marisa Tomei, Cicely Tyson and Steven Weber.
"As the World Turns," a Procter & Gamble Production, tapes in Brooklyn, New York and airs on the CBS Television Network. (Check local listings.) Christopher Goutman is the Executive Producer; Hogan Sheffer is the Headwriter.

SoapNet Taps Lisa Rinna and Ty Treadway to Host SOAPTALK, a new Soap-and-Lifestyle-Themed Talk Show!
SoapNet has tapped Lisa Rinna and Ty Treadway (Troy, OLTL) to host its second original series, SoapTalk (working title), a daily one-hour series premiering on the network Monday, June 10, 2002. The brand new soap-and-lifestyle-themed talk show, which begins production in June, will tape in Los Angeles.
Hosted by daytime stars Lisa Rinna and One Life to Live's Ty Treadway, SoapTalk will feature the latest and greatest from the world of daytime television with guests ranging from soap experts and costume designers to the biggest stars from the most popular soaps. SoapNet's first original show, SoapCenter, which launched in January 2000, will begin to run in a strip format, five days a week in July.
"A successful talk show starts with a fabulous host," said Deborah Blackwell, General Manager of SoapNet. "When the idea for the talk show came up, we remembered how smart, funny and personable Lisa was when she co-hosted with Regis. Ty, with his quick wit and sense of humor is her perfect complement. They have great chemistry together."
Rinna took the daytime world by storm in 1992 when she joined the cast of Days of our Lives as the beautiful, yet deplorable, Billie Reed. After stirring things up for three years on DOOL, she had a 2-season stint on the primetime drama "Melrose Place." She has appeared in the highly-rated Lifetime Original Movies, "Another Woman's Husband" and "Sex, Lies, and Obsession," where she starred opposite her husband, Harry Hamlin. She has also starred in the made-for-television movies "Lies Before Kisses," "Vanished," "Close to Danger," "Nick Fury: Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D" and "Oh Baby," as well as the HBO Movie, "Good Advice." Rinna has long been recognized for her keen fashion sense, having graced the pages of such magazines as Vogue, In Style, Glamour, Cosmopolitan, People, and Us Weekly. Rinna has been married to actor Harry Hamlin since 1997. They have two children.
Ty Treadway joined the cast of One Life to Live in May 2000, playing the handsome, manipulative Dr. Colin MacIver. Colin was an opportunist whose evil ways cost him his life in the spring of 2001. Treadway returned to OLTL in August 2001 as Colin's twin brother, Troy. Treadway competed and won the Mr. Natural Pennsylvania bodybuilding title while working for the New Jersey State Legislature. He subsequently began pursuing a modeling and acting career, appearing in GQ Magazine and working in theater and commercials in New York. On television, Treadway appeared on such series as "Ally McBeal," and "Just Shoot Me," before landing his role on OLTL. He has also been featured in several independent feature films.
