SSW West -- General Hospital/Port Charles Weekend, April 20-21, 2002
By Jessica Radloff
Soap fans are the best. There's just no other way to say it. I challenge someone to find me a group of people more dedicated, more enthusiastic and more intelligent than those who love daytime. I feel that after spending the last three weekends at Disney's California Adventure, I should send out a memo telling every soap actor to truly cherish the moment. To see the smile on a fan's face the second they walk up to their favorite actor is priceless. That's why Super Soap Weekend is so special. It's more than seeing an actor from afar--it's giving them a hug, acting opposite them, taking a picture with them, and receiving an autograph. It is the most memorable experience a fan can ever hope to have. Actors usually say that they have a passion burning inside them that drives them to perform. Well, the same can be said for daytime fans. Without a doubt--they are passionate. And with that said, let's get on with all the festivities as the first annual Super Soap Weekend West came to an end with the casts of GeneralHospital and Port Charles.
Unlike the previous two weekends, the GH/PC Weekend of April 20-21, 2002 included a rare treat. There was breaking soap news at Super Soap's final two days. Real-life sweethearts Brian Presley (Jack, PC) and Erin Hershey (Allison, PC) got engaged in true Disney fashion. Friday night after Disneyland had closed to the public, Entertainment Tonight asked Hershey to do some promos for their telecast. The spunky blonde was more than eager to jump at the opportunity and spent the next few hours taping various segments. Little did she know that Presley was finishing the final touches on his romantic proposal. As Hershey was finishing up, she was asked to participate in one final activity--riding down Main Street in Cinderella's carriage. As she waved to the crowd (puzzled because the park was supposed to be closed), "You Look Wonderful Tonight" began playing from the loud speakers. Upon the end of her ride, medieval men playing trumpets surrounded the carriage, and fellow co-stars Thorsten Kaye (Ian, PC) and Lynn Herring (Lucy, PC) lent a helping hand by lining a walkway with rose petals. Of course, at the end of the trail stood Presley holding a glass slipper in his hand. Then, on one knee, he proposed to his bride-to-be. To say the least, Erin was ecstatic and completely blown away by her fiancé's romantic gestures. Oh yeah, she also said yes!
Well, no news can top that, but there were some other interesting moments throughout the weekend. Surprisingly, although this weekend was more crowded that the One Life to Live weekend, it still paled in comparison to All My Children's star-studded event. Maybe it was the Susan Lucci factor, or maybe a shirtless Cameron Mathison had something to do with it, but the GH/PC weekend was much less fan-active than AMC's. More precisely, AMC fans seemed to be much more excited and "into it." The GH/PC fans were more subdued. However, to be fair, some of GH's biggest stars were not in attendance. Anthony Geary (Luke), Genie Francis (Laura), Constance Towers (Helena), Maurice Benard (Sonny) and Ingo Rademacher (Jax) were all absent. Regardless, those who did attend, like PC's Brian Gaskill (Rafe) and GH's Coltin Scott (Nikolas) and Jackie Zeman (Bobbie), sure made up for it!
Coltin Scott (Nikolas) was absolutely hilarious when he joined the lovely Annette in Walt Willey's casting call. Although Annette was just thrilled to be on stage with Walt, she put every other "fan-actor" to shame with her confident and daring portrayal of Gia, opposite Scott's Nikolas. Although Annette had tried to make it on stage at the two previous Super Soap Weekends (why she wasn't picked, I don't know), she certainly proved that good things come to those who wait. Her portrayal was so realistic and entertaining that even Coltin got into the moment and accidentally uttered a four letter word (not to be printed here) when things began to get hot and heavy with the two!
In the various press sessions, several of GH's cast took to the podium and answered some of our most burning questions. Jacob Young (Lucky, GH) admitted that he has already chosen his scenes for Emmy submission, while joking that if he won, he would act a scene on stage as well. Jackie Zeman (Bobbie, GH) explained that she is the crafts mom at her kid's school and enjoys preparing for all the holidays they celebrate. Furthermore, Zeman said that she loved GH's retrospective down memory lane for their 10,000th anniversary episode. In addition, Kin Shriner (Scott, GH) admitted that he had tears in his eyes as well from the episode, but not for the same reason as Zeman. "I had tears in my eyes too, but mainly because it had to do with my hairline! Shriner joked!"
I took the opportunity to share with Rebecca Herbst that a friend of mine attended high school with her and in the yearbook, Herbst was named most likely to become rich and famous. I asked Herbst if she achieved all the goals she set for herself back then? "I never thought that I wanted to be famous" replied Herbst, "and I don't necessarily know if I consider myself famous. I don't think any of us do. But my goal in high school was definitely want I wanted to do and I'm proud of myself for doing it." She then had a question for me. "Who is my friend who went to her high school?" The other journalists indulged us as Rebecca and I engaged in a mini conversation about her high school escapades! Looking on like a proud parent, Young pronounced that he is quite proud of Herbst too!
Moving on, Chad Brannon (Zander) announced that the show is probably going to start exploring Zander's back-story soon. Finally, before the press interviews came to an end, Tamara Braun (Carly, GH) expressed that working with the entire cast is an enormous joy for her and she always welcomes the opportunity to work with everybody.
With that said, DCA's first Super Soap extravaganza was in the books! Aside from a couple of chilly days, the weather was perfect and the fans were out in full force. The actors were embraced and loved every minute of it. But most importantly, the fans were overjoyed and left with a renewed sense of love and devotion to their favorite show! Mission accomplished!

Passions Selects New Summer Song
You heard it here first! The new summer "anthem" for Passions is "Walk with Me" by Atlantic Records artist Seven and the Sun. The new single will premiere on the May 15th episode of NBC's hit daytime drama PASSIONS. The very special musical performance marks the first-ever collaboration between NBC Daytime and Atlantic Records, Senior Vice President, NBC Daytime Programs, Sheraton Kalouria announced.
"PASSIONS was looking for the one special song that would capture the attitude and spirit of the stories they'll be telling in Summer 2002. 'Walk With Me' is that song and when viewers hear it, they'll immediately understand why we're so sure it's destined for the top of the charts," said Kalouria. Propelled by lead singer/songwriter Seven, the New Jersey-based group has created a collection of utterly infectious songs, which capture a stunning range of emotions and an equally remarkable variety of sounds. The album, "Back to the Innocence" is an irresistible assortment of modern pop soul, highlighted by the feelgood first single 'Walk With Me.' "Back To the Innocence" will be released on June 18.
"PASSIONS is thrilled to be able to provide the exclusive worldwide network television debut of Seven and the Sun's energetic 'Walk with Me'," said Passions' Executive Producer Lisa S. Hesser. "What a great surprise to find this irrepressible band playing unapologetically feelgood music," said Paul Antonelli, PASSIONS' music supervisor. Seven and the Sun is obviously on the cusp of something huge and is the perfect fit for PASSIONS. 'Walk With Me' will continue to play on PASSIONS throughout the summer of 2002."

What is Everyone Watching on TV? Not Soaps.
One in four adults (27%) watch news programs more than anything else, but teens still shout sitcoms! Only 2% of both teens and adults watch soaps.
In a recent study by Opinion Research Corporation, virtually the entire population (97% of adults and 96% of teenagers) admit watching some television every week. The top-watched television programs by adults were TV news (27%), sports (14%) and sitcoms (14%). Teenagers, on the other hand, spend their hours in front of the tube watching sitcoms (20%), movies (18%) and cartoons (18%). Soap operas, the genre we all love, only garnered a feeble two percent of the adult and teen audience. We need to get more folks to watch our favorite shows! LOL Here's how he numbers broke down per the study:
Type of Show You Tend to Watch Most on Television:
TV NEWS: Adults 27%, Teens 3%
SITCOMS: Adults 14%, Teens 20%
SPORTS: Adults 14%, Teens 13%
MOVIES: Adults 12%, Teens 18%
DRAMA: Adults 12%, Teens 7%
CARTOONS: Adults 4%, Teens 18%
REALITY SHOWS: Adults 4%, Teens 8%
SOAP OPERAS: Adults 2%, Teens 2%
GAME SHOWS: Adults 2%, Teens 2%
TALK SHOWS: Adults 2%, Teens 3%
OTHER: Adults 6%, Teens 5%
Interestingly, the study also revealed that while adults confessed to watching an average of 17 hours of television each week, one quarter of them (25%) watch more than 20 hours and in some cases over 30 hours (12%) of TV each week. This was surprisingly more than teenagers, who said they watch an average of only 11 hours of television each week, with just 13% watching more than 20 hours in a typical week.
The study was conducted by Opinion Research Corporation's CARAVAN(R) among a nationally representative sample of 1,008 adults and has a margin of error of +/- 3%. The survey was conducted October 26-29, 2001. The TEEN CARAVAN survey was conducted October 25-28, 2001 among a national sample of 513 teens aged 12-17 and has a margin of error of +/- 4%. CARAVAN is the twice weekly national telephone omnibus survey, that reflects commitment to providing the fast, cost effective, high quality consumer research that is critical in a rapidly changing marketplace.
