Dear Suds Buds,
What would daytime be like if it left all the murder, rape, pillage and backstabbing behind? Do you think we would still be interested if soaps were purely about love and romance in the afternoon? I am on the fence on this one. But I do think that there is too much murder and mayhem on soaps these days.
Let’s break it down:
All My Children has the Michael Cambias murder mystery. The dead body of Cambias was found gagged, bound and hanging frozen in a meat locker!
As the World Turns had Simon’s life in dire danger. In so much danger, that he was forced to leave Katie behind so as to spare her from any danger.
Bold & the Beautiful is bringing back Taylor who was brutally murdered by Sheila. She is an ethereal being now, and it’s great seeing her back on B&B, but thoughts of her brutal and senseless murder are still what’s foremost on my mind.
Days of our Lives has killed off almost the entire cast! Well, not quite, but there has been so much blood and gore of late, that maybe the show should change its name to Days of our Deaths.
General Hospital almost murdered off Zander, but it looks like Zander is still with us. Still there was a murder investigation, and Ric was heck bent on pinning the crime on Nikolas.
Guiding Light has just killed off Carrie, and Josh is taking the fall for his daughter, Marah, who is the one who pulled the trigger that mortally wounded Carrie.
One Life to Live has the Music Box Killings, another rash of senseless murders, Passions has a number of dire schemes a foot to foil characters at odds, and the Young and the Restless is still dealing with Sharon’s secret.
It’s all so morbid. Yes, there are some snippets of romance and humor, but all this murder, death and dying is turning soaps very dark.
So, the question is, would you still tune in if your soap only focused on romance and uplifting storytelling? Or, should there simply be a more balanced effort in crafting story that encompasses romance and humor along with mystery and intrigue? Right now, for me, it just seems to be rather skewed toward the macabre on every single soap. I want to shake all the writers and say: “Lighten up already!”
