Soap actor signs on to help fight Alzheimer's

One Life to Live's Robert S. Woods, Promotes Alzeimer's Website

Robert S. Woods, the Emmy Award-winning actor who plays Bo Buchanan on the ABC daytime drama, One Life to Live, is lending a hand in the war against Alzheimer’s disease, which threatens to attack 18 million Americans by 2030 if nothing is done to stop it.  Woods, whose mother and sister both died of Alzheimer’s appears in public service announcements introducing a non-profit Alzheimer’s information website, alzinfo.org, which goes live November 1, 2002 in conjunction with Alzheimer’s Awareness Month.

The alzinfo site, which provides comprehensive, up-to-date information on the cause, care, and cure of this disease, is being developed by the Fisher Center for Alzheimer’s Research Foundation.  Nobel Prize winner Paul Greengard, PhD, directs the Foundation’s scientific laboratory at the Rockefeller University.

“When my mother was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s, I honestly didn’t know where to turn,” says Woods.  “Today, you can get on any computer, and with a few clicks, find help, answers to your questions, lists of places to go for support, and people to chat with. We didn’t have that resource.”

Wood’s mother died in 1986 at the age of 79, after a lengthy battle with Alzheimer’s, during which the actor took a hiatus from his popular role on OLTL in order to be closer to her and to oversee her care.  His older sister succumbed to the disease when she was in her early 70’s.

“I think families who are struggling with this disease need to know that there is a place they can go for help,” Woods says.  “It can be very reassuring to know that you’re not alone.”

alzinfo.org features the latest information on diagnosis, treatment and scientific research about Alzheimer’s disease, and includes comprehensive information about support and resources for people living with Alzheimer’s, their families and caregivers.  A special “Geo-Search” feature enables users to find relevant resources in their local communities where they can go for additional help, simply by entering their zip code. New features will be added regularly. The site is funded by a federal grant administered through the U.S. Administration on Aging and the New York Fund for the Aging.

PSAs (Public Service Announcements) featuring Robert S. Woods and promoting alzinfo.org will begin airing on the ABC network and SoapNet in November.

Click onto http://www.alzinfo.org after November 1, 2002.
