Kanan reveals love for the Italian culture

What's Deacon Up to Now?

Soapdom’s King of Buzz, Mark Edward Wilows, got right to the root of the matter with Bold and the Beautiful’s Sean Kanan (Deacon).  Is there any truth to rumors that he is thinking of leaving the show?  Get Inside the Bubble™ right now and find out!

When Sean Kanan isn’t portraying tyrant Deacon Sharpe on the Bold and Beautiful, you will find him jet setting off to Italy, a country that he has grown very fond of.
“I guess you can say I’m addicted to Italy,” Kanan said. “I love culture, and the Italian’s have a lot of culture. I love to spend my free time in Italy. In fact, I’m even studying Italian so I can communicate better.” Molto bene!
Kanan enjoys the admiration that the Italian’s have for American actors. In Italy “Bold and Beautiful” is called “Belleza y Poder,” and the American actor is treated like a rock star. Italian’s love the Bold and Beautiful so much that the show went on location to Italy several years ago. (B&B is seen in more than 100 countries)

“Truthfully I was surprised and flattered,” Kanan said. “I have found that it seems like they (Italian’s) are mesmerized by an actor, or is it just that you’re on television.”
Kanan believes that the popularity of the show abroad stems from the fact that it can be considered a smaller market with fewer shows available. “Italy has their own shows (soaps), but in my opinion, it seems like our shows are better quality and have better production value,” he said.
Kanan has also been spending time working in Italy. He has done several magazine shoots and is interested in becoming a corporate spokesperson for a major fashion company. “Yes, I admit I have been talking to people over there,” Kanan said. “I’m into fashion, and the Italian’s have fashion along with a strong sense of flair for fashion.”
Not only that, there’s more than just fashion waiting for Kanan in Italy. He said that he may have found the girl of his dreams there. Having dated her only three times, he seems to be smitten. “Well if you were to see her you would know why,” Kanan laughed. “She is really nice, and I’d like to get to know her better, but seriously we’re just friends.”

On the Bold and Beautiful beat, Kanan enjoys playing Deacon and stirring up mayhem in other people’s lives. “He’s a guy that has gotten his mother-in-law pregnant, and he likes to create terror,” Kanan said. “I believe Deacon is a fun character, and I like to play a morally conflicted guy.”
Also known for his role as A.J. on General Hospital (93-97), Kanan attributes the character of Deacon as a guy who is able to “take the ball and run.” The difference between the roles of A.J. and Deacon is that many actors have come and gone portraying A.J.
“I like the fact that I am the originator of Deacon,” Kanan revealed. “On General Hospital, I felt underused and under appreciated, but now I feel like a vital member of the cast.”
As discussion regarding Deacon continued, we put a direct question to Kanan.  Soapdom members want to know if the rumors are true that Kanan might be leaving Bold and Beautiful.  So, we asked him.

B&B Rewind:  Sean Kanan and Bobbie Eakes when Deacon and Macy married in 2003.

“I’m going to be as honest as possible. I don’t know. I have five more months to go on my contract and I haven’t been approached,” Kanan said. “I’m open to discussions with the powers that be, and I trust and admire Brad Bell (executive producer). I’d have no problem continuing if they want me, and I feel Deacon has a lot of avenues to explore.”
Kanan believes that the success of an actor depends on how versatile one is in the business. An actor should be able to do stage, television, and take on every medium that is out there, and explore all the aspects.
Stage is different from TV. The live audience is great. TV is different from film. There are adjustments, like technical adjustments, but one needs to learn it all to be considered an accomplished actor.
Kanan has appeared in several movies like Karate Kid III and The Chaos Factor, but said that his ultimate goal is to someday make a movie like “Philadelphia” starring Tom Hanks. “I want to do a film, or a mantra show to make a difference in someone’s life,” Kanan said. “There are jobs you do for money, or sometimes (because you’re intrigued by) the part, but rarely is there a divine opportunity to make a mark.”

Stand-up comedy is also a love for Kanan, as is writing poetry, but because of his hectic schedule it’s hard to do. He said that someday he’d like to get back and work on it.
“One thing I want to say to the fans is how much I appreciate the support. The character (Deacon) is a dark horse, and it means a lot that you guys have stuck around. Words can not express my gratitude.”
