Down for the Count!
Ok, so Maurice Benard (Sonny, GH) couldn't come; and scheduled Master of Ceremonies Wayne Brady (of ABC's Whose Line is it Anyway?) had a prior engagement; and some of the other GH actors were a tad late, or even
no-shows. Regardless, Real Andrews (Taggert, GH) proved to the crowd why he
is such a generous and compassionate human being. Although the odds were
stacked against him, Andrews took the high road and made the best of a rather
unpredictable situation.
The Celebrity Boxing Match, part of the GH fan club weekend at LA's Sportsman's Lodge last July featured Xavier Martinez in place of the hospitalized Benard. Following the match, Andrews said that his pal "is very sick, and could use all your prayers." (As of 8/30/02, Benard was healthy and back at
work). Supporting Andrews in the ring was his wife and one-year-old son, Marcus. In addition, Coltin Scott (Nikolas, GH) sat in the front row (charming all the ladies nearby!), and John J. York took a seat on the other side of the ring.
The few-hundred that were in attendance didn't seem thrilled when Martinez
jumped in the ring accompanied by loud music that featured explicit language.
Luckily, Andrews quick arrival brought the enthusiasm back up to where it
should have been when he came running out shirtless and with the moniker,
Real "The Pitbull" Andrews.
Although this probably was the quickest boxing match in the history of
sports—a mere 15 minutes—Andrews was crowned champion and proudly raised his son in the air to show him off to the oohing and aahing crowd. (Or maybe the fans were just glad to see Andrews up and about considering the fact that Martinez knocked him to the ground quite a few times!).
Following the match, the ring was quickly dissembled, and fans moved toward
the main ballroom for a Q&A with the champ and his co-stars. Fans
immediately wanted to know about future storylines and what the actors think
of GH's new writing regime. Here are some of the excerpts from the Q&A.
Real Andrews: "I'm very excited Bob (Guza) is back." In addition, Real
asked for the fans to be patient for the storylines to evolve. "It doesn't
happen overnight," he said. As for his boxing obsession, Andrews commented
that he thinks Lennox Lewis is an awesome boxer. "Also, one of my favorite
boxers outside of Ali is the old (Mike) Tyson before he got corrupted." Ok,
so we know who your boxing idols are, but what about your acting idols? "I
really admire Jack Nicholson. I became an actor because of Jack Nicholson in
'One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest."
Coltin Scott: Coltin charmed the crowd when he referred to his on-screen brother Lucky as "my lover-brother!" Why you ask? "Because we've been lugging around dead bodies together!" The audience got a big laugh from
that!
John J. York: York told the crowd that he hopes to do more crossovers to Port Charles. When a fan inquired about a possible love triangle with Mac, another woman, and Taggert, Andrews chimed in, "as long as I don't have to get in bed with him (York)!"
After the Q&A, Andrews announced that he and his co-stars would begin signing
autographs and taking pictures. Before leaving the stage though, Andrews
apologized for the lack of fellow castmembers that had promised to make
appearances. Showing what good sports soap fans are, one lady shouted,
"That's OK! You're good enough!" Couldn't have said it better myself.
