The 2002 TV Soap Golden Boomerang Awards
Four Seasons Hotel, LA
It was January 18, 2002. Although the Australian soap press was honoring the best in daytime TV, the stars didnt have to go too far to find out how much Australia loves them. The 2002 TV Soap Golden Boomerang Awards, held at Los Angeles swanky Four Seasons Hotel, honored the four daytime dramas seen in both the U.S. and the land down under by Australias #1 Daytime Magazine, TV Soap. Actors from Days of our Lives, Passions, Bold and the Beautiful, and the Young and the Restless came primed for an evening of fun and celebration, even though some of them were being honored for their former roles on other shows. After all, the shows in Australia run anywhere from three months to five years behind what's airing in the U.S.
The red carpet arrivals were abuzz with glamour, glitz and gossip as the stars posed for photographers and made the rounds with the press. Long time Days favorite Christie Clark (ex-Carrie) arrived with her date, followed by Heather Tom (Victoria, Y&R) and her boyfriend. Not too far behind was Roark Critchlow (ex-Mike, Days), Clarks former on-screen love interest. Eileen Davidson (Ashley, Y&R) showed up on the arm of former Y&R star Vince Van Patten, all but confirming that they are indeed an item. Also making the rounds were Doug Davidson (Paul, Y&R) and Lauralee Bell (Christine, Y&R) with their spouses. Galen "I Love Australia" Gering and his wife Jenna were radiant as they made their way into the grand ballroom. Alison Sweeney and her husband, Dave, were eager to meet up with former co-worker and friend, Christie Clark. Lauren Woodland (Brittany, Y&R) looked stunning in a long black halter dress as she made the rounds with boyfriend Gary Hecker. In addition, Hunter Tylo (Taylor, B&B) lived it up as she posed on a piano in a form-fitting, gorgeous green ball gown. Julianne Morris (ex Greta, Days) showed off a much shorter, but very chic new haircut and Ronn Moss (Ridge, B&B) still looked great, despite clashing on the red carpet with his bright purple jacket.
But enough with fashionafter all, this is an awards showlets get on to the winners! Before Peter Reckell (Bo, Days) announced Eileen Davidsons five roles on Days as the Most Popular Storyline, he told the crowd that he was "proud to be part of the soap community" and honored to be part of the award show that night. Once Eileen took the podium, she admitted that she had the best time playing five roles, albeit the challenge. Justin Torkildsen (Rick, B&B) raved about Australia when he picked up his award for Most Popular Younger Male Star, and Sharon Case (Sharon, Y&R) praised her Y&R co-stars in her acceptance speech for Younger Female Star. Alison Sweeney said it best when she said that Eileen Davidson deserved her win for Most Popular Comic because she was just "mean, mean, mean (Eileens famous phrase during her stint as Susan on Days)." Speaking of Alison, Sarah Buxton was shocked to pick up the Boomerang award for Most Popular Villian since "Alison always wins these things." Meanwhile, Peter Reckell was awarded the award for Most Popular Male Star and an absent Katherine Kelly Lang (Brooke, B&B) won in the Most Popular Female category. Lauralee Bell and Doug Davidson presented the Most Popular Couple award to a surprised Adrienne Frantz (Amber, B&B) and Sean Kanan (Deacon, B&B). Kanan thanked head writer/executive producer Bradley Bell for "writing these wonderful roles for us." B&Bs winning streak wasnt over just yet as they also took home the award for Most Popular Show. Upon receiving the award from Ronn Moss and Hunter Tylo, Brad Bell said, "I want to thank most of all my mother and father."
The evening was extremely relaxed, allowing the stars to hang loose and mingle with their fellow co-stars. During a break in the show, many of the actors joined in dancing to Australian folk songs. Participating in the activities were David Shaughnessy, new Executive Producer at Y&R, Justin Melvey (Colin, Days), Justin Torkildsen (Rick, B&B), and Patrika Darbo (Nancy, Days), among others. When the evening drew to a close several hours later, some stars hopped in their limos or cars, while others took their celebration to the nearby Four Seasons Bar.
