Keeping track, Stars at SSW & A death in the GL family

Dear Suds Buds,

Do you ever wonder what the writers are thinking when they script your favorite show? One of my favorites, All My Children, now seems like it's a totally other program! I am finding it difficult to get into the stories as they are as yet unfamiliar to me, and there is not much interest being generated for me to become more familiar with them. Strange.  On Bold & the Beautiful it is becoming more difficult to keep track of Brooke's romantic entanglements. LOL. On Y&R and GH new faces are assuming the roles of old characters and that's a bit disconcerting.  OLTL is holding it's ground, as Lindsay is still as manipulative as ever. To think that she has only been on the show for several years. It's almost as though she has been a mainstay from the get-go. That's how well that character was crafted, introduced, developed and is performed, IMHO. However, I still don't forgive Todd for his antics in regard to the baby. On ATWT I am trying to understand why Dalhia has to be part of the Katie/Simon mix. TRO has many members who continue to hope for a Lily/Simon reunion. Who knows? Anything is possible in soapdom.

Speaking of As the World Turns and All My Children, last week we reported that Cady McClain (ex Dixie, AMC) was not slated to join the denizens of Oakdale, per the myriad internet rumors afloat in that regard. However, along with stating that McClain was not coming to ATWT at that particular moment in time, we were also given the caveat of "never say never" from the spokesperson for the show. Well, it looks like that was a word to the wise and a subtle hint of things to come. The ATWT official website now reports that McClain will indeed be recurring on ATWT beginning mid-April assuming the "bad girl" role of Roseanne. The ATWT's spokesperson was unavailable for further comment prior to press time.

Tragedy Strikes Guiding Light as Mary Stuart, Queen of Soaps, Dies At Age 75

New York, NY -- Procter & Gamble Productions and "Guiding Light" are deeply saddened to announce the death of Mary Stuart, who played Meta Bauer on the CBS daytime drama. Stuart, 75, passed away at her home in New York City on February 28, 2002 due to complications from a stroke.

Stuart, who was inducted into the Soap Opera Hall of Fame in 1995, was the first daytime performer to be nominated for an Emmy in 1962. The recipient of four Daytime Emmy nominations, she was awarded special lifetime achievement recognition for her popular role as Joanne Tate on "Search For Tomorrow." Last October, Procter & Gamble Productions celebrated Stuart and her 50 years' contribution to daytime television.

"'Guiding Light,' Procter & Gamble Productions and the entire daytime world has lost a woman, an actress, and a friend who showed us how to do daytime with grace, class and humor for over 50 years," said Mary Alice Dwyer-Dobbin, Executive-in-Charge of Procter & Gamble Productions. "We mourn her passing."

Added "Guiding Light" Executive Producer Paul Rauch, "I first met Mary when I was a young stage manager on 'Search for Tomorrow.' What struck me most about Mary then -- and now -- is what a consummate professional she was. Her infectious spirit pulled her cast together as a unified group and provided them with a sense of purpose. I never saw Mary give less than her total commitment from the day I met her until her last performance on 'Guiding Light' on Tuesday, February 26."

Born on July 4, 1926 in Miami, Florida, Stuart was raised in Tulsa, Oklahoma where, at the age of 12, she started her career by singing with local bands. During high school, she worked with the USO at area military bases and after graduation, worked briefly as a photojournalist in order to pay her way, at age 18, to New York to pursue her acting career.

While working as a camera girl at the Hotel Roosevelt ballroom in Manhattan, photographing those who came to dance to the tunes of Guy Lombardo's orchestra, Stuart was "discovered" by movie producer Joe Pasternak. Three days after they met, she had her first screen test; a contract with MGM soon followed. In Hollywood, Stuart appeared in over 20 films, performing in movies with Ronald Reagan ("The Girl from JonesBeach"), Errol Flynn ("Adventures of Don Juan"), Clark Gable ("The Hucksters"), Esther Williams ("This Time for Keeps") and Henry Fonda and Lucille Ball ("The Big Street").

Back in New York City, at a lunch with advertising executive Roy Winsor (who, unbeknownst to Stuart, was developing a serial tentatively titled "Search for Happiness"), Stuart complained that there were no female characters on television with whom women could identify. Shortly after-wards, she was cast as the leading lady in "Search for Tomorrow,"which debuted on September 3, 1951. Until the show's cancellation 35 years later, on December 26, 1986, Stuart served as the heart and soul of the show in her role as heroine Joanne (Jo) Gardner Barron Tate Vincente Tourneur. A groundbreaker on many fronts, Stuart was the first actress to have a pregnancy written into the storyline of a live daytime drama; the first soap opera performer to sing on air; and in 1962, the first daytime performer to be nominated for an Emmy, in the same category as prime-time actresses Mary Tyler Moore and Donna Reed. The apron she wore as Jo on "Search for Tomorrow" resides in the Smithsonian Institutionin Washington, D.C.

Stuart joined the cast of "Guiding Light" as Meta Bauer on November 22, 1996, a program, Stuart used to note, which tapes in the same building as "Search for Tomorrow." This past fall marked Stuart's fiftieth year working in the daytime drama genre.

Stuart also acted in the live television dramas of the 1950's, narrated the NBC news documentary "Determining Force" in 1977, and performed on stage in "Marriage Go Round." A writer, singer and composer, her autobiography, "Both of Me," was a Literary Guild selection when it was published in 1980. She released two albums, "Joanne Sings" and "Mary Stuart," and an article she wrote for "New York" magazine about her relationship with a homeless woman became the basis of a TV movie entitled "Face of a Stranger", starring Tyne Daly and Gena Rowlands, who won an Emmy for her role in 1991.

Off-screen, Stuart was the chairperson and founder of the New York chapter of BOOK PALS, an organization of working actors who donate time to read books to New York City public school children, in the fall of 1992.

Stuart is survived by her husband of more than twenty years, architect Wolfgang Neumann; her two children from a previous marriage, Jeffrey Krolikand Cynthia Stuart; and two grandchildren. Donations in Stuart's memory can be made to Screen Actors Guild Foundation -- Mary Stuart Book Fund, 5757 Wilshire Boulevard, Los Angeles, CA 90036.

Film and television actor Daniel Quinn joins the cast of Young & the Restless as Ralph Hunnicutt. Ralph is the stepfather of MacKenzie Browning. Quinn's previous credits include numerous guest star appearances on the television series NYPD Blue, Crossing Jordan, E.R., and the X Files. He recently completed shooting the feature film "Don't You Cry for Me," with Alan Arkin. His other feature film credits include "Dead Bang," "Wild at Heart," "The Last Outlaw," and "Scanner Cop I and II." His first airdate has not yet been released.

In other Y&R casting news, look for Jennifer Gareis to reprise her role as Grace Turner on Monday, April 15. Also, Barbara Crampton will likewise reprise her role as Leanna for several shows beginning Friday, April 5.

Guiding Light Gets New Head Writer

Millee Taggart has been named to the headwriting team of Guiding Light effective immediately, announced the show's Executive Producer Paul Rauch. Taggart joins Headwriter Lloyd "Lucky" Gold at the writing helm of the longest-running daily program in broadcast history.

"We are delighted to have Millee Taggart join us at 'Guiding Light,'" said Rauch upon making the announcement. "Millee's deep awareness of character and strong sense of plot development are considerable assets that will complement the talents of Lucky and the Guiding Light creative team."

Taggart, a veteran of daytime drama, has worked for over 20 years in the genre, most recently as a story consultant for "Port Charles." Previously, she was Headwriter for "All My Children" (1996-1997), "Loving"(1988-1991; 1992-1993), "As the World Turns" (1983-1984), "Ryan's Hope"(1985-1987) and "Guiding Light" (1994). In addition, she has served as a story consultant or scriptwriter for several of the aforementioned daytime dramas as well as for "The City," "Santa Barbara" and "Search forTomorrow." Taggart is the recipient of an Emmy and four Writer's Guild awards.

As an actress, Taggart performed on "The Edge of Night," "Search forTomorrow" and "One Life to Live," and appeared in the feature film "Young Doctors in Love," Garry Marshall's 1982 spoof of soap opera.
