Dear Suds Buds,
Guess what everyone! I have just been cast as the new Dixie on All My Children. Yes, they said they weren't going to recast the role, always keeping the door open for Cady McClain to return, but they took one look at my audition tape, and that, as they say, was all she wrote! I fly to New York to begin taping the first of May.
April Fool! :o) Did I have you going there for a second? Heehehehe. I just couldn't resist pulling your collective legs. After all, it is April Fool's day.
Happy belated Easter and Passover, everyone. I can't believe that I completely forgot to wish everyone a happy holiday last week. Duh. Talk about one's brain totally leaving the building. LOL Hope you all enjoyed good fun, family, and chocolate! Looks like Spring is here! Yippee. Wonder if we will see Spring fever, young-love-in-bloom-stories on our favorite soaps. I've got my fingers crossed. Speaking of our favorite soaps, let's get down to it....

ABC Daytime Prez to Disney Family Channel
Angela Shapiro, president, ABC Daytime, and president, Buena Vista Productions, has been named president, ABC Family Channel, effective as of Thursday, March 27, 2002. Announced last Thursday by Steve Bornstein, president ABC Television Group, Shapiro will continue in her current role at ABC Daytime until a successor is named.
As president of the ABC Family Channel, Shapiro will be responsible for the channel's day-to-day operations, including creative direction, programming, business affairs, finance, scheduling, on-air promotions, marketing, publicity and research. In announcing Shapiro's appointment, Bornstein said "Angela has done a tremendous job leading ABC Daytime, which has been number one in the key demographic of Women, 18-49 for 25 years, and continues to make ratings history for the daypart. As head of BV Productions, 'Live with Regis and Kelly,' she has achieved top ratings and she has developed important new talent for syndication. She brings a vast experience of bold, successful and innovative marketing and programming, which will play an integral role in building ABC Family into a top-tier cable channel."
"I am thrilled to have the opportunity to help brand and program ABC Family Channel," said Shapiro, "and work to establish it as a strong complement to the ABC Network."
As president of Buena Vista Productions, Shapiro was responsible for all new development and programming for syndication, cable and daytime. Recent projects include the development of the upcoming talk/variety show hosted by the multi-talented Wayne Brady, and the syndicated version of "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire." She also provided creative oversight for current shows such as "Live with Regis & Kelly," ABC's "Millionaire," "Ebert & Roper," and "Win Ben Stein's Money."
Shapiro became president, ABC Daytime in August 1998, where she is responsible for all aspects of daytime programming on the ABC Television Network. The current daytime lineup is comprised of "The View," "Port Charles," All My Children," "One Life to Live," and General Hospital." Shapiro is responsible for introducing creative programming changes to the lineup, most recently developing a telenovella hybrid format for "Port Charles," along with a production model unique to the soap genre. Under her leadership, "The View" has been the most successful program in its time period since 1994, consistently reaching over one million Women 18-49.
Shapiro drew on her experience in direct response to develop a successful business with the Home Shopping Network called "Shop the Soaps" and worked to help develop the ABC Soap Opera Bistro at Disney's California Adventure, the first soap-themed restaurant of its kind. Most recently, Shaphiro was responsible for the daypart's ground-breaking multi-million dollar deal with Revlon to integrate the brand into a daytime storyline.
Shapiro joined ABC Daytime in 1995 as senior vice president, marketing and promotion, where she was responsible for developing on-air and marketing strategies, as well as coordinating and supervising its advertising, promotion and licensing. Shapiro was responsible for implementing the first network storyline 'recaps' and 'teasers' into the soaps. She also developed the annual "Super Soap Weekend" at Disney/MGM Studios, a successful fan event which has recently been expanded to include weekends at Disney's California Adventure at the Disneyland Resort.
Prior to joining ABC, Shapiro had a distinguished career in advertising. She was co-founder and publisher of Soap Opera Digest, and in 1988 became co-founder and publisher of Soap Opera Update. In her new role as president, ABC Family, Shapiro will report to Bornstein, who has direct oversite of the channel.
DOOL's Darbo & "365 Glorious Nights of Love and Romance"
"Days of our Lives" star Patrika Darbo has become one of daytime television's most popular and - at 5 feet 3 inches and 200 pounds --sexiest actresses. Darbo has succeeded in the world of the super-thin, where being a perfect size two is the norm. In "365 Glorious Nights of
Love and Romance," written by Patrika Darbo with Lorraine Zenka (ReganBooks; May 2, 2002; $24.95/Hardcover) Patrika blows through the skinny stereotypes to show how women of any shape and size can have the life, love and romance of their dreams.
When Darbo landed the role of shrewd and sensuous Nancy Wesley on Days of our Lives in 1998, she won rave reviews for her portrayal of a full-figured, opinionated goddess. In 1999, Entertainment Tonight and TV Guide simultaneously named her one of the 16 Sexiest Stars of the Year and in 2000, Patrika was nominated for a daytime Emmy in the Supporting Actress category.
In "365 Glorious Nights of Love and Romance," Darbo invites her fans into her personal life. She goes behind the scenes of her marriage, her
career, her sex life, and her journey to accept her body as beautiful -- no matter what size it may be. She writes about her struggle with weight from her heaviest at 220 pounds to her lowest weight of 140. She offers advice, not for losing weight, but for gaining self-confidence, a positive outlook, and a winning attitude. She writes not about dieting and cutting back, but about finding out what is best within each of us and letting it loose.
Darbo's writing is totally straight-from-the-hip, girlfriend to girlfriend. From emotionally touching to hysterically kinky, "365 Glorious Nights of Love and Romance" tells it like it is and gives proof that sexy self-confidence comes in all shapes and sizes.
Co-author Lorraine Zenka wrote the New York Times bestseller "Days of our Lives: The Complete Family Album." She was the former West Coast editor of Soap Opera Update and her work has also appeared in Mademoiselle, People, and Women's World.
"365 Glorious Nights Of Love And Romance" by Patrika Darbo with Lorraine Zenka is a ReganBooks publication. Publication Date: May 2, 2002 ISBN: 0-06-001382-6 $24.95/Hardcover, 288 pages

DOOL's Jason Cook Accepts MAGGIE Award
Jason Cook traveled to Washington DC last week to accept the Maggie Award, which recognizes outstanding coverage of reproductive health issues in television programming. The Maggie Award was presented to Days of our Lives by the Planned Parenthood Federation of America. Days of our Lives was honored for several episodes which aired during the summer of 2001 that dealt with Shawn and Belle, and Mimi and Kevin contemplating having sex for the first time and discussing contraception and testing for sexually transmitted infections.
Nearly 1,000 people attended the gala dinner, including leaders in the arts, members of congress, and Planned Parenthood chief executive officers and board presidents.
In his acceptance speech, Jason acknowledged the writing team, the producers and the directors of Days of our Lives that made great efforts to portray the teens in a realistic manner and to not gloss over the issue. In fact, when Jason took to the podium, he joked that the award will probably be taken away from Days of our Lives due to the clip that was just shown of a scene where Shawn was berating himself for almost having unprotected sex with Belle. In character, Jason said that he learned his lesson and he would be prepared next time. Jason wrapped up his speech by expressing how proud he and his co-stars were to have had the opportunity to collaborate on telling these stories that hopefully made teenagers think twice before rushing into a sexual relationship.
