Stars from Both Coasts Gather to Celebrate Emmy Week in New York
There were quite a few parties both before and after the Daytime Emmys were announced on Friday, May 20 at Radio City Music Hall. Here are some of the partying highs and lows…
On Thursday, May 19, 2005, GL’s Ricky Paull Goldin (Gus) hosted the first ever Emmy Evening with the Stars, a charity event that raised a fair amount of dollars to support the Multiple Sclerosis Care Center of Greater New York. Held at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel on Park Avenue at 50th Street in NYC, the highlight of the night was the live auction. According to our sources, Hollywood's couture jewelry designer, The Sossi Collection, donated a gorgeous 18K white gold ladies pendant with 66 brilliant cut stones weighing in at 0.41 carats. Crystal Hunt (Lizzie, Guiding Light) was modeling the piece for all to see when she called out, "Daddy! Can you buy this for me? I want to wear it right now!" Dad responded with "Give someone else a chance, honey!" The winning bidder paid $1,200, and the next day, hopped a plane to Italy, happily showing off her Sossi piece! "Making people happy is what I love most about this business and being able to give back makes it all worthwhile," says Sossi.
When Sedona, Arizona's Adobe Grand Villas Luxury 3-day get-away package went up for live auction, the guests went nuts! And who wouldn't? The package included a gourmet three course breakfast each morning, dinner for two prepared by the villas' personal chef and two one-hour massages in the on-site couples spa! Linda Dano (Lena, Guiding Light) and Judith Chapman (Gloria, Young and the Restless) both love Sedona and both were blown-away by the grandeur of the Adobe Grand Villas during the power point presentation! When the package sold for $1,300, Dano turned to the lucky winning couple and said, "What a great prize. I think this place is amazing! Can I come with you?"
Meanwhile, an Emmy mainstay was underway across town. New York’s Marcia Tovsky, held her pre-Emmy party for the 16th year. A bunch of stars came out to party on with Tovsky. In fact, Danny Gauthier (Kevin, OLTL) proved himself to be quite the party animal, showing up a just about every party we covered! Jeff Branson (ex Jonathan, AMC) was no wallflower either. He made the rounds, too! We also spotted a bunch of stars at yet another party, this one hosted by Linda Rohe at the Stir Lounge.
Meanwhile, John Enos (Bobby, Y&R) hosted a party, too. He owns a club in New York and invited a few of his friends and co-stars. Unfortunately, this party turned out to be a bit of a drag. Read on…
Y&R Celebrates The Emmy’s – Privately!

The day before the Emmy telecast two of daytime’s hottest soaps – The Bold and The Beautiful and The Young and The Restless came to New York to PAAAR-TEEE!
B&B did it with the press on Thursday afternoon. Later that night, at the very trendy Club 17, owned by John Enos (Bobby,Y&R), Y&R cast members were supposed to gather for Pre-Emmy festivities. Call time – 9:30PM, which was set to begin shortly after the celebration at New York’s Gracie Mansion. Maybe that’s why very few Y&R folks showed up at the Mayor’s shindig!
If you didn’t know the address of Club 17, you’d walk right by it, it’s that nondescript. During the day, West 17th is a bustling, over-crowded thoroughfare. At night, it couldn’t be more different. At one end of the block there’s a club with ropes and bouncers, just the kind of place you’d want to go if you were young and living in the Big Apple. Club 17 is in the center of the block and next to an open parking lot, very rare in the City. The windows are dark and Sushi is the main event.
Outside the restaurant a rope was set up, which only invited guests were allowed to cross. If there were three still photographers waiting to capture a glimpse of Y&R’s stars, they had a long wait. About four or five large barrel-chested wise guys guarded the entrance and intimidated anyone who looked like they didn’t belong. Dressed in very expensive Italian suits with dark shirts, they could have been cast straight out of Goodfellas. That’s why clichés are clichés! With so few in attendance, five bouncers did seem excessive.
The late-night bash was co-hosted by Michelle Stafford (Phyllis Summers, Y&R), who came out several times to see how people were doing and check out the arrivals of which there were very few. But she looked radiant and was clearly enjoying herself inside the restaurant and told SOAPDOM, “We’re celebrating Emmy and it’s fun!”
As she posed for photos, the paparazzi flattered her endlessly, “Michelle, you’re the best!”
“Everybody loves you.”
“Michelle, come to New York.”
She just kept posing, “All right. Cool! I’ll do that. Would they like to pay me a lot of money?”
One of the photographers wanted to know if Y&R would move to New York? She played along, “Bring my show, yeah!”
A few gawkers were hanging about. However, they could be counted on one hand. One man, with a digital camera just happened to walk by and when he realized it was a Y&R event he decided to take a few pictures for his girlfriend, a devoted Y&R fan. Just to complete the colorful sight, a goodly (and Godly) number of Orthodox Jews complete with black hats and coats hustled up and down the street, paying no mind to the small hoopla at 37 West 17th.
Suddenly, a taxi pulled up. All eyes turned as a bunch of 20something guys, including All My Children’s Jacob Young (JR Chandler) got out of the cab. He was the only recognizable face in the bunch. He made a bee-line for the bouncers, whom he seemed to know. Isn’t that interesting! Much smaller in stature, he still seemed to fit right in. SOAPDOM hoped to get a few words, but he was more interested in the babes coming and going than he was in the press. After all, he was on his own time and he mentioned he was ready to blow off some steam.
The public relations man looked very relieved when Sharon Case (Sharon Collins Newman, Y&R), finally appeared. She was more than happy to pose for the cameras and talk to SOAPDOM. She was unaware that the Television Academy would be presenting a tribute to Bill Bell, “Oh really! We do mention him and go on about his work on The Young and the Restless during our presentation.” Case remembers the late great man with fondness and that he was without peers. A native of Detroit, Case doesn’t miss a chance to hit the Apple, “I’ve lived here full-time, part-time, back and forth, and I love it here.”
The press release made it sound as though all sorts of stars would be in attendance - Young and the Restless cast members Eric Braeden (Victor), Peter Bergman (Jack), Sharon Case (Sharon), Jeanne Cooper (Katherine), Christian LeBlanc (Michael), and from General Hospital cast members Corbin Bernsen (Durant) and Rick Hearst (Ric) among many others cast members from other soaps. If they were there, they must have come in the back door. No one ever saw them.
One of the photographers went inside to use the bathroom. Maybe she would have the scoop. Not a chance. It was so dark inside she couldn’t see a thing.
Even though this event seemed to be a bust, the rest of the pre-Emmy events had been a success and SOAPDOM covered all of them. Now, it was time for me to head for the apartment and start thinking about how to write this story!
