Dear Suds Buds:
All My Children has always been one of my all time favorite soaps. I began watching AMC in college, along with my suitemates. Of the four of us, at least two would schedule classes just so they could be home at 1 PM to see the show! Which is saying a lot when you go to school in Florida where the sun shines 90 percent of the time, and the beach is only a short drive away.
After college a career called, and at that time, VCRs were not a household mainstay. I lost touch with the show and soaps in general until the mid 90's when a soap actor and I became friends. It just so happened he was on All My Children. At first I tuned in to see his work as he was up for a role in a movie-of-the-week that I had written. The project had been optioned by a producer and was being pitched around town. Although only tuning in as a curiosity to see the work of the prospective star, it wasn't long before I was hooked on the show! It probably took all of 3 episodes.
Since the mid 90's I've seen AMC get good and get bad. It's been boring, then riveting. It's been adequate and it's been sensational. One or two storylines were, for moi, downright unwatchable. Noah's escape while in route to prison, and the resulting Jamaica sojourn is one that made me tune out.
For the most part, however, AMC continues to engage. Current storylines like the Leo/Greenlee/Jake/Mia quadrangle, Kendall's return and the chemistry I see emerging with Ryan, Tad and Dixie's continued struggles, and Erica/Bianca/Chris and Jackson are what's making me tune in right now. I don't get the whole Proteus story, or what's going on with Liza/Adam. I don't know why they felt aging JR was a good thing except to use him as the catalyst in Frankie's murder. I question why Kendall has returned with such an attitude against Erica. Didn't she marry Dell and move to Florida after coming to a sense of reconciliation with Erica before she left? Now, suddenly she is outraged by her mother once again. What am I missing there?
I suppose that All My Children is reflective of all soaps. Most of the time the storytelling keeps you glued to the TV. Sometimes it makes you shake the TV in frustration, or question what strange mushrooms the writers are doing to come up with such dreck. Other times it gets you so fed up there's nothing left to do, but tune out. I've been there. It's most likely the same for many of you. But then, if you are a true fan of the show, if you have grown to know and love the characters, eventually, you'll tune in again just to see what's up with them. Odds are, you'll get hooked all over again. At least that's what always happens with me. How about you?
