Update on Ashlee's weight loss! Lillian gives Lizzie sound advice.

Tina Sloan (Lillian Raines, Guiding Light)

I’d want to begin this week’s column with an apology in the delay of publication. I have been playing host to out of town company and very short on time the past 10 days.

I have mostly positive things to say about Guiding Light this week. One of my favorites was Lillian. It was good to see her in more than one or two scenes as a by stander. Lillian is such (and one of the few left) a veteran of the show. I can remember Lillian as long as I can remember Guiding Light. I know there are still some of the vital characters from current viewers lives out there, still working the show could bring back and strive with. For now I will take what I can get and enjoy Lillian and the “old timers” as one very young fan referred to the characters, I find make the show worth watching. If it weren’t for the constant storylines involving Reva, Josh, Billy, Buzz, Alan, and Alex, I don’t think I could tolerate the show. Guiding Light has a talented and diverse group of young actors and they do an excellent job incorporating them into scenes and storylines involving the older crowd, unlike many other soap operas that have the older storylines and the younger that rarely or never coincide.

Not only did we get to see more than usual of Lillian, she referred to one of the most memorable affairs on the show, her affair with Ed Bauer that was the cause of Maureen’s death by -proxy.

Josh and Reva’s walk down memory lane with the making of the movie I am disappointed in. As a fan I would have much rather seen the memories of the characters using retro clips, rather than the memories being acted out by two very bad actors. Retro clips would have touched a deeper nerve for long time fans and served as an informative tool for fans who have since joined the Guiding Light family.

Josh is acting pretty darn petty lately. I was pleased to Reva called him out on it, and isn’t taking the blame for Josh’s petty behavior. Reva has had her faults in the past sure, but Josh has always had a way of turning everything around on Reva. Everything is always Reva’s fault in some way, and it typically isn’t only Reva there. I’m just ready for the entire movie to wrap and be over with.

Reva and Cassie’s exchange outside Cassie’s house was nice to see for a change. Talking like sisters like they used to when Laura Write portrayed Cassie, unfortunately Cassie caught herself and had to ruin it with her attitude. Cassie and Josh deserve each other in a way because they act just alike. Yet they both need Reva in their lives to keep them in check other wise they would run amuck with petty, self-righteousness.

Lizzie and Bill are really getting on my nerves. If these two would sit still for five minutes maybe they could get some order in their lives. The constant location changes for them is exhausting to watch and I don’t care what is being said between these two characters because it’s going to be washed away by walking through the park, or storming into Harley’s house, or lurking in the Spaulding mansion, or getting in and out of cars in a parking lot. They are always somewhere and moving a lot.

There is a certain soap opera format that works and has worked for years, GL may want to reflect back on that for delivery of lines. This sudden need to always have the characters occupied while reciting their lines is taking the new format in a different direction than just a visual effect that I have commended and respected up until now, when it is getting in the way of the story. Guiding Light has good characters and a good story and at the end of the day they put on a good show, I hate to see something easily controlled ruin a good story.

One good story in which I am impressed with this week was Ashley’s web journal. By documenting her weight loss progress and the mental and emotional effects the character is experiencing fans are able to keep up with Caitlin’s progress through Ashlee. To date she has lost 55 pounds since the lap band procedure she had on the show and in real life.

Caitlin/Ashlee deserve a standing ovation; not for losing the weight, because she was beautiful and talented as a heavier set girl, but for her professional and realistic approach to loosing weight. She is a good role model and inspiration for any woman young or old trying to loose weight or change something they don‘t like about themselves. Caitlin overcame her weight to land a role on a highly awarded soap opera, a genre known for skinny and perfect good looks. As herself in her own skin Caitlin created a character that is beloved by characters, co-stars, and fans; then when she was ready to undergo a weight loss procedure she didn‘t go extreme, rendering herself unrecognizable coupling it with extreme plastic surgery.

Wednesday’s confrontation between Ashlee and Daisy left me feeling sad for Ashlee and annoyed by Daisy. I don’t think I can ever come back and like Daisy after this recent storyline. Daisy deserves all of the misery she continually inflicts on herself after turning on the one person that has been a true friend and cared for Daisy unconditionally.

Until next week Guiding Light fans keep your light shining as Springfield keeps theirs’ shining for us.
