NYC Honors Daytime Nominees
At 12 noon on Tuesday, May 4, 1999, in the Public Hearing Chamber at New York's prestigious City Hall, Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani presented official nomination certificates to the New York area nominees of the National 26th Annual Daytime Emmy Awards. This year, nearly 500 New York area directors, producers, performers, writers, editors, stylists, composers and technical talent are nominated. Fifty attended the City Hall ceremony, including Robert S. Woods (Bo, OLTL), Kelly Ripa (Haley, AMC), Elizabeth Hubbard (Lucinda, ATWT), and Michael Laibson, former Sr. Producer, AMC. Also in attendance were Patricia Reed Scott, Commissioner of the Mayor's Office of Film, Theatre and Broadcasting, and John Cannon, President of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences (NATAS).
Ms. Scott introduced Rudy Giuliani, the 107th Mayor of NYC, by extolling his support for the film and television industry in New York. "He has just announced the new film stages, has lowered taxes, and done everything possible to advance all of your careers," she said to cheers and applause from the nominees.
"It's a pleasure to have you here," said the Mayor in his welcoming comments. "We honor you for your artistic achievements, your professional achievements, but also for what you do for the City of New York in the excellent work that you do." He continued by saying that the television industry has grown to be a fundamentally important part of the job and economic base in New York.
"There's no place in the world that can match New York's energy, spirit and creativity, when it comes to the television industry," said Mayor Giuliani. "As we honor the extraordinary talents of our Emmy nominees today, we are reminded that the New York metropolitan area is the largest television market in the United States, reaching 18 million people across three states. ABC, CBS, NBC and FOX are all headquartered here."
"Television began here, " Giuliani stated. "So much of the first national broadcasts took place here in the City of New York. As the City of New York has turned itself over the last five or six years, so has the television industry. We have experienced five consecutive years of record growth in film and television production. You produce a lot of jobs and put a lot of New Yorkers to work. We are saving records now for the creation of jobs, and you're leading the state and the country in that category. Secondly, and maybe even more important, you help to define the City of New York in a special and unique way. It's artistic sense. I want to do everything I can to see your industry grow in the city. "
The Mayor went on to describe two new projects that he is very excited about. The Hudson River Studios in SoHo, which will house two daytime television shows as anchor tenants, and the studios that will be developed on the site of the Brooklyn Navy Yard by Miramax, Robert DeNiro and a group of others.
"All of this would not mean anything," continued Giuliani, "if we didn't have a tremendous amount of talent in this City. You demonstrate that. You demonstrate the tremendous amount of talent that exists in New York in the work that you do day in and day out. It seems that as glamorous and exciting as it is to people on the outside, and in some ways it is, it is also very, very hard work. And you do it very well. And I really enjoy being able to congratulate you, giving you the certificate that recognizes you, and shaking your hand."
"One other thing," continued the Mayor. "One of the fixtures of Daytime Television in NYC is leaving the airwaves, and I want to express my deepest gratitude to all the cast and crew of Another World which has been a part of the whole scene for 35 years."
The Mayor then turned the proceedings over to John Cannon, President of NATAS.
"For more than three decades, the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences has had a very special dedication to daytime television," said Cannon. "It is a most special, unique world. As the Mayor has said, it has done this City proud. It has encouraged all kinds of things in this city artistically, and affords actors and directors (a way) to be reasonably gainfully employed."
Cannon went on to acknowledge the fans of the genre. "Daytime has caught on. It's a phenomenon of our age. Other than in the music world, there are no fans who are more wild, more dedicated, and really more sincere in their recognition and in their enthusiasm."
"We at the Academy encourage you (the nominees) in whatever way we possibly can," Cannon said. "We help you. We also congratulate you. You have done so much for our industry and certainly for the City of New York. Thank you for your appearance here today."
The nominees were then called one by one to receive their official certificate of nomination and shake hands with the Mayor. The moment was recorded in history by Mayor's Office staff photographers, and an 8 x 10" black and white glossy photo will be given to each nominee as a momento of the event.
"On behalf of all New Yorkers, I would like to thank all the nominees -- the most talented people on television -- for helping make New York City the Entertainment Capital of the World," the Mayor concluded.
The ceremony was followed by a reception catered by Roy's New York, which opened in February, 1999. The 26th Annual Daytime Emmy Awards will take place at Madison Square Garden on Friday, May 21,1999 and will be aired nationally on the CBS television network.
