Melissa Claire Egan (Chelsea, The Young and the Restless)Chelsea, Proactiv, the loss of All My Children and working on both soap operas

The stunning, talented Melissa Claire Egan is known to soap opera fans from her roles on All My Children (Annie) and The Young and the Restless (Chelsea). But she is also a famous spokes model! You may or may not know that Egan has been promoting the skin care product Proactiv for a number of years. And why? Cos she uses it, swears by it, and wants to share that news with the world.

Soapdom asked Egan, who has been using Proactiv for 11 years, and has been a spokesperson for five, what it is about Proactiv that appeals to her the most, and why she chose Proactiv over other brands.

"It works," she said matter-of-factly. "When I was in college, my skin started breaking out really badly -- more so than ever -- with these monster zits. Nothing was working to make them go away. I would go to dermatologists and try every gel, every topical cream, and nothing was making the zits go away.

"Then I discovered Proactiv -- and it was like magic. It made my skin clear and I continue to use it every day."

Eleven years is a long time to remain product loyal. We wanted to know how Egan first heard about Proactiv.

'My mom discovered it. She was a flight attendant and she must have heard it from one of her friends on a flight and she knew I was struggling with my skin and it was just one more thing to try."

Egan was surprised when it just totally worked. "Now my skin is the first thing people compliment me on."

Egan likes all of the Proactiv products, but she does have a first choice. "My favorite is probably the basic three-step system. That's what I started using 11years ago and that's what originally changed my skin. I love all the other products but that was the original product and that's still my favorite."

As passionate as Egan is on her skin care regime, she is even more passionate about her work on soap operas. From the cancellation of All My Children to her new role on The Young and the Restless, Egan shared her thoughts and candid comments with Soapdom.

We first got into her feelings on the loss of AMC and if she remembered where she was and what she was doing when she found out about the cancellation.

"I was not on the show at the time," she shared. "I got a text from Chrishell (Strause, Amanda AMC, who was still a cast member). She had gotten an email about having a big meeting and she was on to it. We both suspected, but we didn't know for sure, then. I found out later in the day that it was a meeting to tell everyone that the s how had gotten cancelled.

"I think many people were surprised. There were always rumors but there are always rumors about every show and about every potential issue. But then it did really happen --and it blindsided everybody."

With the role of Annie and All My Children behind her, we then congratulated her on landing the role of Chelsea on The Young and the Restless. She's been in Genoa City now for a few months, and she is definitely settling in.

We asked if working with the Y&R family was different than working with the AMC family.

"Every show is different to a certain level," she revealed. "The Young and the Restless has been great. It's been awesome. I've compared it to going back to school but on a different campus and different dorms. It's exciting. It's a really great group of people and a fun new challenge."

Melissa Claire Egan, Proactiv Spokes Person Egan then shared that the roles of Annie and Chelsea differed in so many ways. "Chelsea is more of con artist, but she is getting nicer," Egan said. "Annie was crazy and you didn't know what to expect because she wasn't stable. With Chelsea you don't know what to expect because she is a con artist. She is more conniving. But now she is getting nicer."

Or is she? Egan previewed that we will see another side of Chelsea to come. This week, for example, Chelsea faced a medical crisis with her baby. But is the baby really at risk or is this just another machination on Chelsea's part? We can't wait to find out.

When asked what she preferred playing -- nice? Crazy? Conniving? Egan said: "It's more fun to be bad! Whether it's crazy bananas or a stable kind of bad, but its exciting because Chelsea is a new character for me and that's a new challenge right now."

As Egan noted earlier, going to Y&R was like returning to college. Not only is that because it's the same but different, it's because some of her former AMC co-stars are now her co-stars on The Young and the Restless.

Like Billy Miller, for example. Miller plays Billy Abbott on Y&R, but also hails from AMC.

"Billy is Chelsea's baby daddy," Egan says. "It is a fun dynamic because I know Billy (Miller, the actor) really well." Miller played Annie's brother on All My Children. "So it's fun playing something other than brother and sister."

But Miller is not the only former AMCer now in Genoa City. "Debbi (Morgan, Harmony) and Darnell (Williams, Sarge), even Ameila Heinle (Victoria). There are a lot of old AMCers here, which is comforting," shared Egan.

Even All My Children's former casting director now calls Y&R home. "Yes, the beautiful, lovely Judy Blye Wilson is here too. It's incredible," enthused Egan. "Even Peter Bergman (Jack, Young and the Restless) was on AMC."

Although she has had no scenes with Debbi Morgan or Darnell Williams as of yet, she is so psyched that they are on board. "When I see Debbi or Darnell I squeal like a little child cos it's like seeing an old friend."

We also learned that All My Children was Egan's first contract and her first consistent gig.

"I was like a deer in headlights at first, and had to learn from scratch," she said. "(I had to learn) the pace of it all. But, it's like playing a sport. Once you learn it and practice it every day you just get better. You just do. On Y&R, the pace is the same. AMC changed my life forever in the best possible way. It was my first big gig. My first contract. Y&R is incredible. But it's a little more comforting when you've done it for five years before. They are both so good and it's a blessing to be on both of them."

Egan is likewise a contract player at Y&R and we next got into more depth on her development of the character of Chelsea.

"Like human beings, the character is evolving and changing week by week as characters do," Egan said. "Because they have just introduced her mom, Anita (played by Catherine Bach), we see where Chelsea's come from, so we can understand her better, and hopefully that gives her a little bit of redemption."

Speaking of Anita, Catherine Back began airing just last week in the role, and Egan couldn't be more delighted with the casting.

"I adore her. She is so lovely. She has great energy to be around. She is excited to be here and it is really fun getting to know her as a person and actress."

Without giving away the details, Egan shared that going forward, Chelsea's role in Genoa City is two fold. She is there to stir things up as well as smooth them over.

"It's a little bit of both," Egan confirmed. "And it changes from week to week, so you'll all have to tune in to see what Chelsea is up to next."

After being a cast member for four and a half years on a soap that was recently cancelled, and now being well-ensconced on the nation's number one soap opera, what advice does Egan have for fans in regard to their helping to keep their favorite shows on the air?

"Soap fans are best fans in the world. If they keep doing what they're doing, keep watching and supporting and hopefully there's no need to worry at all."

To her fans, Egan has this special comment:

"Thanks for all the support. You have all been so supportive for so many years. You rock."
