It's back to school for Linder!
UL Lafayette's College of the Arts will have a special guest of honor at this year’s Beaux Arts Ball – Kate Linder (Esther, Young and the Restless).
This year’s event, which is billed cleverly as the Beaux and the Beautiful, will take place at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 12 at the River Oaks Event Center in Lafayette.
Linder has starred as Esther Valentine on Y&R since 1982. What initially began as a small speaking role for her turned into repeat appearances, which grew into the key role that it is today. Linder also received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and thoughtfully engages in much philanthropic work.
But what's the connection? Why is Linder heading to Lafayette for the Beaux and the Beautiful event? She is helping to celebrate the creative work of her friend and colleague Joe Stewart, the award-winning set designer who attended UL Lafayette.
The Beaux Arts Ball promises a raucous night of creativity and imagination with an all-out call for costumed revelers to dress up to the nines—think Erte images and the Folies Bergere—and celebrate the spirits of music, dance, theater, visual arts, architecture and design.
Amidst this night of fun, music and pageantry, Stewart will be announced the winner of the UL Lafayette College of the Arts 2012 SPARK Lifetime Achievement Award.
Stewart attended Cathedral Carmel High School and studied architecture at the University of Southwestern Louisiana before transferring to Carnegie Mellon University to graduate with a B.F.A. in Drama (Design).
His illustrious career had humble beginnings. After graduating from Carnegie Mellon, Stewart moved to New York to find work in theatre and television set design. He quickly went from working with stage clothing to being named Assistant Art Director for the soap opera Days of Our Lives.
Stewart has worked on sitcoms, award shows, special events, game shows, charity telethons, talk shows, music and variety series and specials, and live theatrical productions.
To date, he and partner John Shaffner have received three Primetime Emmy Awards for David Copperfield Specials and one for The George Lopez Show, three Daytime Emmy Awards for The Ellen DeGeneres Show, one for the George and Alana Show, one Art Director’s Guild Award, and one Los Angeles Area Emmy Award.
Stewart is also the Artist in Residence with the UL Lafayette College of the Arts for 2011-2012. He will work closely with theatre, design, architecture and choreography students, and give periodic lectures on the art of stage and set design during his residency.
From Art Nouveau to Art Deco to Art New Age, the spirit of Beaux Arts Ball-goers is what makes this night zing. Great music by The Nouveau String Band, a delicious dinner served cocktail buffet-style, special guests and more surprises await revelers who make it to this event.
The Divas, a special group of sponsors, will pay homage to Stewart, soap operas and grand operas in a costumed pageant. Performances and parades by UL Lafayette College of the Arts students will make the night even more exciting.
“The historic Beaux Arts Balls of Europe will have nothing on our version in Lafayette,“ said UL Lafayette College of the Arts Dean Gordon Brooks. “We are a community who likes to dress up, parade, and celebrate life. I have no doubt Lafayette will step up to its own tradition and bring their party to our party.”
