SuperSoap Weekend West #2 -- One Life to Live

By Jessica Radloff

Not to sound like a cliché, but the real winners at the second Super Soap Weekend West held at Disney's California Adventure on Saturday and Sunday April 13-14, 2002 were the fans of One Life to Live. Unlike the All My Children weekend which was chilly and grey, the skies were sunny, temps were in the mid 80s, and the crowds were less than half that of the AMC gang. Although you'd like to see more support for a show that is creatively at the top of its game, the fans that did turn out were rewarded with more one-on-one time and less chance of being overwhelmed.

Kicking off the morning press conference was Erika Slezak (Viki), who looked absolutely stunning in a bright blue suit. She was extremely gracious and took time out to answer each question with much thought and interest. Asked about her feelings toward OLTL's live week on May 13-17, Slezak said that she's "thrilled to death. I'm one of the few people at One Life to Live who cannot wait, and because of that, I'm probably going to be the biggest basket case when it starts. It's going to require a lot of preparation, a lot of dedication, but we are so ready for it. It hasn't happened in daytime that a show has gone live in 25, 30 years, so it's going to be fascinating."

In addition to preparing to go live, Slezak is offering her own advice to aspiring actress/daughter Amanda, 20. I met Amanda two years ago at New YorkUniversity's TischSchool of the Arts. Amanda is the spitting image of her mother and is an extremely talented up-and-coming actress. I asked Slezak what advice she gives her daughter, and Slezak surprised the press by announcing that "the only advice (I give her) is to stay out of the business! I know why she wants to do it--it's the same reason I wanted to do it. And all I can advise her is to be as ready as you can, to be aware that as much as I love it, it's a horrible business."

Regardless of the pressure, even Slezak admits that there's got to be time for fun. "(Amanda's) actually in Florence right now having the best time of her life. She's actually majoring in shoes," Slezak joked. "We took her over in January. Every other store is a shoe shop. I went nuts. I didn't buy one single pair, but I looked a lot!"

After Slezak left the stage to meet her fans, Kamar de los Reyes (Antonio), David Fumero (Cristian), Nathaniel Marston (Al), Jessica Morris (Jen), and Nathan Purdee (Hank) greeted the press in the second interview session of the day. Unfortunately, Morris and Fumero looked like they'd much rather be somewhere else. Their responses were somewhat deadpanned, but then again, it wasn't even lunchtime and the flight was rather long from New York to Los Angeles. Morris commented on her relationship with on-screen parents Catherine Hickland (Lindsay) and Laurence Lau (Sam) by saying that "ever since I started, Catherine has taken me under her wing, and Larry is like a dad to me. They're both really great." As for Fumero, he was especially good-looking and easy on the eyes! Kamar de los Reyes was equally stunning and extremely funny and energetic. He loved answering questions from the press and enjoyed joking around with his co-stars. Although Nathaniel Marston was the last one to be asked a question, he laughed throughout the interview session and showed genuine excitement to be part of such a talented cast.  He even poked fun at himself for being the only actor there to wear a tie. "I got the memo, what about you guys?" he joked. Rounding out the group, Nathan Purdee commented on his kids, and was very cordial and appreciative throughout the whole session.

As the clock hit noon, Phil Carey (Asa), Robert S. Woods (Bo), Melissa Archer (Natalie), Sherri Saum (Keri) and Tim Stickney (RJ) entered the room, but unfortunately weren't that much livelier than the last group. Woods, Archer and Stickney were sincere and gracious, but the others didn't seem to be in the mood to talk. However, it was funny when a reporter asked Saum to comment on her professional R&B singing career. Looking quite puzzled, Saum told the reporter that the statement wasn't true and the only place she really sings is in the shower. As for Melissa Archer, she gave the sun a run for its money with her bright red hair. Very sweet and energetic, she seemed to be enjoying her first Super Soap experience. Equally so was Robert Woods in a casual un-tucked white shirt, who looked more like he was ready for a day at the beach.

The last group of the day was by far the most animated and talkative. Although, that might have had something to do with the fact that it was after lunchtime and the actors had loosened up. Fiona Hutchison (Gabrielle) is very cute and petite and commented that she is enjoying her role now more so than in the past when she first was on OLTL. "I hope that's showing," she offered. Although Erin Torpey (Jessica) remained quiet for much of the interview, she looked rather pleased to see OLTL's fan club president in the audience. As for Catherine Hickland (Lindsay), it was obvious that she was thrilled to be attending California's first Super Soap Weekend. Dressed in a Pocahontas-themed outfit (fringe suede jacket, suede low-riders and feather earrings), Hickland was never at a loss for words. Pretending that her disappointment stemming from Kristen Alderson's (Starr) failure to garner an Emmy nomination was going to prevent her from attending this year's telecast, Hickland admitted the real reason she'll be absent on Emmy night is due her performing on the New York stage. In addition, she commented that working with Ty Treadway (Troy) is a huge joy for her and that the upcoming story for Lindsay in prison is going to really knock the fan's socks off! Speaking of Treadway, he is absolutely gorgeous and extremely friendly. Now that he has nabbed a seat next to Lisa Rinna in SoapNet's new soap-themed talk show, he admitted that he should start taking tips from us fellow reporters.

Last but not least, the very boyish and adorable Laurence Lau (Sam) really did a number on the crowd. He was one of the most attentive and friendly stars in attendance. But before he left the pressroom to meet his fans, I asked him that since so many fans remember him as Greg Nelson from All My Children, does he keep in touch with fellow co-star Kim Delaney (ex-Jenny, AMC)? Lau explained that five years ago they tried to meet up but things didn't work out. "We played phone tag for quite a while, but then it got silly. Kim and I have gone our own ways, although I do see Darnell (Williams; ex-Jesse, AMC) from time to time."

Out of everyone I observed interacting with the fans, none paid them the attention or spoke to them so eagerly than Lau. He treated each fan as though they were the only one in the park and graciously answered all their questions. Even after security tried to rush him along his way when his Q&A session ended, he stopped to take pictures and chat for an extra 15 minutes with the fans that had gathered by the side exit ramp. In all fairness, Treadway was extremely gracious too and rushed over to take a picture with a fan when it was apparent that she couldn't make her way to see him. It's that kind of interaction that make the long lines and hot temperatures worthwhile for the fans.

Finally, one suspicious absence during the press interviews was that of Hillary B. Smith (Nora). Reporters were running rampant with several thoughts as to why she had skipped out of the session, but for those who stuck around for the Q&A session later in the day, they found out the real answer. She revealed that she flew in from NYC only that morning because her son was in a play the previous night. As a mom, she explained to the crowd that she wouldn't have missed it for the world.

Overall, it was a terrific weekend for OLTL fans. Except for a few absences (Kristen Alderson, Roger Howarth, James and Cassie DePaiva among them), the entire cast was there to give the fans the greatest weekend of their lives. Job well done guys--you served them right!

One Life to Live, LIVE!

Some people call it working without a net. We call it daytime drama. One week of One Live to Live you won't want to miss! Here's why:

Two people will tie the knot, a location shoot, a love scene, a big secret revealed and much more... It's all live on ABC Daytime's "One Life to Live Live!," MAY 13-17. The BiorÈ(r) brand has signed on to be the presenting sponsor of this unprecedented week of television when "One Life to Live" will air live from its New York-based studio, as well as New York City's famous Central Park. OLTL will be the first one-hour drama in television history to air live for an entire week.

OLTL executive producer Gary Tomlin, who conceived of the idea, said, "Each of the 30 contract cast members will appear during the week. Production has not been pared down to take on the challenge of the live shows; in fact we've made it even more ambitious. In addition to a love scene, we will feed in a remote shoot from nearby Central Park."

Among the exciting stories this week will be the long-awaited moment when Blair (Kassie DePaiva) finally learns the truth about the terrible secret her husband Todd (Roger Howarth) has been keeping. Anything can happen when a show that usually takes an entire production day to shoot will air live in just one hour.

This exciting week of television will culminate with the Daytime Emmy Awards on May 17, for which "One Life to Live" is nominated for Outstanding Drama Series.
