Steve Burton, the popular daytime actor who for over 21 years played the mysterious and often misunderstood Jason Morgan on General Hospital, made a guest star appearance on The Talk today, Monday, January 7, 2013, to announce his new role as Dylan McAvoy on The Young and the Restless.
And the crowd went wild!
As did The Talk host, Sheryl Underwood, who gave him an extremely warm reception! My gosh, she couldn't take her hands off him. She almost smothered him with hugs, which he took in stride, albeit a bit embarrassed.
After Underwood and the audience calmed down, Burton took a seat among the hosts and explained that he said goodbye to General Hospital and Los Angeles last fall and moved to a farmhouse in Nashville. He and his wife wanted to raise their kids out of the hustle and bustle of LA.
But sometimes things are just meant to be. He explained that he has been working with Jill (Ferran) Phelps, now executive producer of The Young and the Restless and former executive producer of General Hospital, on another project outside of soap operas. They've been at it for two years, and his manager has been talking with Sony about the possibilities of that project.
As it turns out, Sony also distributes The Young and the Restless, and when Phelps approached Burton with the possibility of a role on Y&R, the prospect of working with her again was too good for him not to accept. "I have great respect for her," he said.
"I told my manager if I could keep my family there (in Nashville) and come back and forth, I'd come back to daytime in a second," Burton revealed on The Talk. "I am just so grateful to have the opportunity to have the best of both worlds."
Sharon Osborne asked Burton if he could share a bit about his new character.
"He is a war vet -- two wars in Middle East. He was educated as an architect and comes to Genoa City to help his dad who gets injured on a construction job, " explained Burton. There is also some speculation that he's heading to town to take care of unfinished business with a love interest, who could just very well be the character of Avery. Stay tuned.
But even as Burton returns to daytime on a new network with a new show and a new character, fans of his band Port Chuck which includes former General Hospital castmates Bradford Anderson (Spinelli), Brandon Barrish (Johnny Zaccara) and Scott Reeves (Dr. Steve Webber) need not worry. The band is still going strong.
"We are going on tour in February. We have fun on the road and we are gonna go for it!" Visit portchuck.com for info on the tour.
But it was obvious that Burton couldn't be more excited about his new prospects with CBS Daytime. "Last week I was sitting on my front porch and now I'm on The Talk!"
Which was the perfect cue for The Talk host, Julie Chen, to present him with a CBS Daytime welcome basket! "We're so happy to have you part of the CBS Daytime family!"
Soapdom has the sneaking suspicion that fans of daytime dramas feel the same way!
Burton starts taping on The Young and the Restless Tuesday, January 8, 2013. His first airdate as Dylan is Tuesday, January 29, 2013.
