The past few years have been tough on everyone, broadcast network soap operas included. Since 2008, when the economy really tanked, we lost four soap operas: As the World Turns, Guiding Light, All My Children and One Live to Live.
While the effects of an unstable or a bad economy are far reaching and often long lasting on everything and everybody, there are many things you can do to supplement the adverse effects without sacrificing the things that matter the most.
So, what are the things that matter the most? Family, career, health and home, to name a few, right?
There are steps you can take to cushion the blow of an economy that's hit the skids and it is in your best interest to do so. In terms of importance, none hold a higher premium of value, than your health and the health of your family. Without your health, you cannot perform the tasks you need to nor can you make the physical contributions required to sustain the health and wellness of your family. Should you become sick or infirmed, you become an expense to the household, and with money already spoken for and basically under lock and key, taking care of ourselves isn't just the right thing to do - it is the unselfish thing to do.
Here are two great ideas to keeping healthy and happy even when the economy isn't in top form:
Insurance is the best assurance!
If you or any member of your family finds themselves having to do a substantial amount of traveling for work, international travel medical insurance is a must have. There is much truth in the old saying that being sick is more expensive than being healthy. This cost is multiplied sometimes five-fold should you or your family members become ill in international territory. If you've always worked in a field that finds you having extended stays in international lands or even if this is a new career for you, protect yourself with international travelers insurance. Prevention is the best cure!
Farmers markets will help you eat healthy and sometimes even stretch your bucks!
Now may be the best time to do away with traditional grocery stores, convenience stores and fast food chains. While some of these places offer food or reasonable facsimiles thereof, for dirty cheap prices, what you save in money may cost you in health.
Farmers markets take out the middlemen and put you in touch with the actual growers of the food that you should be eating and feeding to your family. Eating from the bounty provided by farmers markets is a surefire way to increase the amount of fresh produce you're eating. This keeps your healthy and keeps your family healthy too! Many times, because the food is grown locally, it can be less expensive than food that is trucked in from elsewhere. But keep in mind farmers have to eat, too. Sometimes, especially if the food is organically grown, the very best and healthy food you can eat, it may actually cost more than what's in the grocery store because growers must follow strict guidelines in producing it and these can incur additional costs which do get passed on to the consumer.
Hopefully, these two ideas, as concise as they were, will inspire you to save, invest and spend your money wisely during the economic crunch. While it is little comfort that this shaky economy affects everyone around the world, what should be comforting is the knowledge that you can survive it. Consider international insurance and eating well, just two of many things you can do to inflate your economic life raft, quickly and affordably.
