The wait is over...  and the Emmy goes to...

Although it took a little finagling and a lot of gumption on the part of the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (NATAS) to even get the Daytime Awards show on the air this year, they announced the winners of the 36th Annual Daytime Entertainment Emmy® Awards televised live on The CW Television Network from the historic Orpheum Theatre in Los Angeles, CA on Sunday, August 30, 2009. The show was a unique partnership between

Associated Television International (ATI), NATAS and MGM Worldwide Television, which is handling distribution of the telecast.

The telecast was hosted by television and music star Vanessa Williams and included several musical numbers, a special tribute to "Guiding Light" for its many years of daytime drama programming introduced by Betty White, and segment titled Daytime Gives Back, which included clips from a documentary featuring soap stars Susan Lucci (Erica, All My Children), Tony Geary (Luke, General Hospital), Kelly Monaco (Sam, General Hospital) and talk show host, Montel Williams. Through proceeds raised by the awards show broadcast, 50,000 children will be fed both in the US and in Africa. Thank you daytime!

The "Lifetime Achievement Emmy® Award to went to "Sesame Street." The award proclaimed: "On the occasion of Sesame Street's 40th anniversary, the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences proudly honors the acclaimed series as a pioneer of the contemporary standard, and presents this Lifetime Achievement Award in recognition of its place as the most highly regarded and most watched educational television show for children around the world." Pretty cool, right? Too bad, though, that Cookie Monster ate the statue! LOL I am sure there's another one waiting in the wings.

Daytime Emmy awards history was made when presenters Jennie Garth and Lori Loughlin announced that The View co-hosts Barbara Walters, Whoopi Goldberg, Joy Behar, Elisabeth Hasselbeck, and Sherri Shepherd were named Outstanding Talk Show Host! It was the first time in the 36-year history of NATAS that multiple talk show hosts were bestowed this honor. The women of The View have been nominated for 12 consecutive years in this category, and this marks their very first win. Unfortunately, The View co-hosts were unable to attend the ceremony and claim their victory of ending an 11-year losing streak. The winning submission for the show, dated March 28, 2008, featured (then-Democratic presidential candidate and senator) President Barack Obama.

The View, the co-hosts shared the following reactions: "There's always room for another gal at our table, especially when her name is Emmy," said Whoopi. Joy, one of two original remaining co-hosts (along with Barbara), said "I always said that the key to success was showing up. This time I was wrong." Elisabeth, who is currently on maternity leave until mid-October, exclaimed, "To be given such an award as a team is most meaningful. Regardless of our differences of opinion, we operate as a unit that I am honored to be a part of everyday." Sherri, who was sitting in a Florida hotel room watching the awards show live on television, said, "I am honored to work on a great show with a wonderful group of women." Sherri also joked, "This award shows that hard work definitely pays off -- and not attending the Emmys certainly helped as well." "I am very proud of the women and happy to share in this lovely award. We are looking forward to getting back to work and patting each other on the back," said executive producer Barbara Walters, who is also the show's creator. Tune in to The View LIVE September 8th to hear the Daytime Emmy acceptance speeches you didn't get to hear Sunday night!

Astronaut, Buzz Aldron, was introduced in the audience, celebrating the 40th anniversary of his walk on the moon.
