Who Got the Nod?

Maura West, As The World Turs, 2007 outstanding Actress WinnerWell, the official nominations have been announced for the 35th Annual Daytime Emmy Awards. The nominations were announced on The View today (April 30, 2008). For those of you who missed the live announcement, fortunately for you, Soapdom tuned in and took notes.

The View got off to a good start to boost the anticipation of the announcements by bringing in large Emmy statues and a red carpet for the hosts to walk down before taking their seats. Unfortunately, my positive critique must end there. The powers that be should have chosen a less, self-absorbed show for the official announcements, because the hosts felt their opinion on the presidential election and Paula Abdul’s latest rantings on last night’s American Idol, was more important than the topic slotted for today’s show.

A talented group of actors and actresses were on hand to read the nominations; and the senior writer for People magazine, Mark D’Agostino, gave his predictions on who would be recognized by the academy, then his predictions of who will go home with a statue after the nominations were announced. D’Agostino gave high praise to One Life to Live on many marks. For lead actor and actress categories, D'Agostino favored Michelle Stafford (Y&R) for her dual roles as Sheila Carter and the role she created, Phyllis Summers. Christian LeBlanc (Michael, Y&R) was predicted to take home the award for Outstanding Lead Actor for a second year in a row.

While there was much mention of the day’s topic throughout the show, the actual air time was very limited -- less than 15 minutes of the show was devoted to the nominations and that time was shared with commercials.

Marcy Rylan (Lizzie, GL) and Van Hansis (Luke, ATWT) took the stage to read nominations for Outstanding Young actor and actresses. Van Hansis made the honorable list as did Marcy Rylan’s former co-star, Tom Pelphrey (Jonathan, GL). Hansis also shared this category with fellow cast mates Jennifer Landon  (Gwen, ATWT) and Jesse Soffer (Will, ATWT). Young & the Restless snagged four nods for this category, including last year’s winner for young actor, Bryton McClure. The surprise came in the young actress category when Vail Bloom, Emily O’Brien, and Tammin Sursok from Young & the Restless all received nominations. Darin Brooks (Max) and Rachel Melvin (Chelsea) of Days of Our Lives were also recognized.

Allison Sweeny (Sami, DOOL) and Brian Dattilo (Lucas, DOOL)  read off the supporting actor and actresses. The nominees for both categories are: Trent Dawson and Kelley Menighan Hensley of As the World Turns, Daniel Cosgrove and Gina Tognoni of Guiding Light, Kristoff St. John, Greg Rikkart, and Tracey Bregman of Young & the Restless, Heather Tom newcomer to Bold & the Beautiful, Judi Evans of Days of Our Lives, and Brian Kerwin from One Life to Live.

General Hospital, Guiding Light, One Life to Live, and Young & the Restless grabbed the top nominations for Outstanding Drama . The Academy recognized David Canary of All My Children, Peter Bergman and Christian LeBlanc,  Young & the Restless’ long time leading men, the legendary Anthony Geary from General Hospital, and the hunk, Thaao Penghlis of Days of Our Lives.

Last but certainly not least, CBS swept the category for Outstanding Lead Actress, once again. One of these CBS superstars will be taking home the statue, Maura West, last year’s As the World Turns winner, Crystal Chappell or Nicole Forrester from the all-new Guiding Light, and Michelle Stafford or Jeanne Cooper who made the list all the way from Wisconsin, or rather Y&R.

Tune into ABC Friday June 20th at 8pm EST to see all the glamour and winners live. Soapdom will have all the before, during, and after coverage just in case you miss the broadcast or you are left wanting more. From the Red Carpet to inside the Kodak theatre in Hollywood, CA, Soapdom will have candid shots of your favorites men and women of daytime.
