Today marks the end of an era for daytime television. With the cancelation of All My Children (AMC aired it's final episode in September 2011) and today's series finale of One Life to Live, ABC now only has one remaining soap opera, General Hospital on the air.  NBC has Days of our Lives, canceling its other soaps, Passions, Sunset Beach, Another World ages ago.  CBS only has The Young and the Restless and The Bold and the Beautiful, saying good bye to As the World Turns in 2010 and Guiding Light in 2009.

For me personally, one of the big travesties of our losing our daytime dramatic serials, is that along with the entertainment value, we have also lost one of true training grounds for young actors and actresses.  

Soap operas have always been the place where newcomers learn the ropes.  They learn discipline. They learn how to work the camera.  They are thrown into the deep end of the pool and are expected to swim.  How could they not?  It's a true do or die situation, and many talented actors and actresses have grown out of the womb of the soap opera into renown.
