Behind the scenes of Emmy week with a soap star!

Arianne Zucker (Nicole, Days of our Lives)The world is celebrity crazy.  Thanks to the networks, the celebrity mags, bloggers and the ever-present TMZ, everyone can see what celebrities are doing 24 hours a day and when it is awards time, we get to see even more of them! It is a little like those Jane and Dick books from my youth….See Jane get ready. See Dick walk the red carpet. See Jane and Dick at the after party with all their celebrity friends looking ever-so glamorous even though it 3:00 in the morning!

This year, I was lucky enough to not only attend the Daytime Emmy’s but also be a presenter.  And with that comes an action packed week’s worth of work, parties and charity events leading up to and including the “big day.” Now you say, “How do celebrities look good day in and day out at all those events?”  A trainer, a stylist, a make-up artist, a hair stylist, designer clothes, a good spray tan, a mani/pedi and sky high heels always help but with a little planning (and good posture!) anyone can do it.

In this column, here is a run down of fun events from this year’s Daytime Emmy’s and how to do it looking like a star.

Kyle Lowder, Arianne ZuckerEVENT: Jim Reynold’s Annual “Days of our Lives” Basketball Game

WHAT TO WEAR:   Cute short shorts (time to show off those legs girls!), comfy running shoes and the event t-shirt. Be sure to use waterproof mascara (who wants mascara running down their face in front of all those cute Soap guys!?)

HOW IT WENT DOWN: One event I make sure not to miss every year is Jim Reynolds’ (Abe Carver on Days of our Lives) Annual “Days of our Lives” Basketball Game.  This year marked the 19th anniversary of this fun and fantastic event. Now the guys put on their serious game faces and as a result, there aren’t many of the actresses on the show that are willing to play, but somehow I always end up running up and down the court side yelling at my teammates not to throw the ball to me! I figure if I just run and move around a bunch I will look like I know what I am doing.  It seems to work and once in awhile I will actually make a basket. Yes, that’s right I am a great shooter (thanks to many games of H-O-R-S-E growing up with my brother).  Anyway, I made a basket or two at Jim’s game, had a really great time and helped raise some money for a good cause in the process.

Tamara Braun, Arianne Zucker, Rachel MelvinEVENT: Daytime Emmy Nominee Party

WHAT TO WEAR: You want to look polished, stylish and feminine and not too over done. Think daytime-chic. Solid colors always work well. Choose a great dress or in my case, a fabulous black pencil skirt and white top that highlights all of my best features.

HOW IT WENT DOWN: On June 9th the Academy of Arts and Science held a Daytime Emmy Nominee Party which was just fantastic and it gave me a chance to see people from other shows before the actual Emmys, which is always fun. The Emmys themselves can get overwhelming and sometimes you don’t get a chance to talk to everyone you want to, so here was my opportunity.  It was a beautiful event held in Burbank and of course I got to be the social butterfly I love to be.  Two of my other fabulous co-stars were also in attendance - Tamara Braun and Rachel Melvin. These two ladies have wonderful style and are just stunning women. By the way, Tamara is wearing the Gold Triple Drop from my Lowd Suga’ line – isn’t it, I mean, she fabulous!!

Kyle Lowder, Arianne Zucker EVENT: The Dogs Next Door benefiting Dogs in Danger

WHAT TO WEAR: Anytime your dog is involved, you’ve got to keep it real.  No one should be seen bending over to pet a dog in a mini, especially not when there is press there! Well-fitting jeans are my go-to choice for events like this.

HOW IT WENT DOWN: A few days later, on June 14th there was “The Dogs Next Door” event benefiting Dogs in Danger. I brought one of my rescues Bam Bam. I was a very proud mama, as he was so well behaved and played so nicely with all his new friends. It was a really hot weekend but Bam Bam was his usual chipper self.  He is super social and loves other dogs -- I like to say that he is the happiest dog on the planet. The highlight of the afternoon was without a doubt, the doggie fashion show which was so cute. There are so many innocent pets that are abandoned and abused and this is one of many organizations that are trying to make people aware of how to take care of and rehabilitate these animals. Fashion note – you can always look stylish, even when you are hanging with your dog!  Here’s a photo of Kyle, Bam Bam and I at “The Dogs Next Door” where my Lowd Suga’ necklace made of ribbon, base metal, and Swarovski crystals brought a little glam to the occasion.

Arianne Zucker (Nicole, Days of our Lives)EVENT: Soapnet’s The Night Before

WHAT TO WEAR: This is the kind of event where a “date night” outfit is the perfect choice.  Find a sexy dress – not striper sexy though. Search for inspiration in your favorite movie to get the look you want.  Breakfast at Tiffany’s, Bonnie and Clyde or any of the Albert Hitchoch movies have great, timeless fashion that works for your date night outfit.

HOW IT WENT DOWN:  Soapnet’s the Night Before was held on June 19th in Hollywood. This was another fantastic event with great dancing and wonderful people, some of which may not have made the nominee party but were out in great form the night before the Emmys. Many were New York actors that had flown in the day before for the big show. Being that “Days of Our Lives” is the only soap opera now on NBC we had a wonderful turn out of actors from our show. It was so lovely to hang out with Farah Fath, Kirsten Storms and Kevin Spirtas. It was the perfect “Days” reunion.

Arianne Zucker (Nicole, Days of our Lives)EVENT: Daytime Emmy Awards 2008

WHAT TO WEAR:  Pull out all the stops.  Now is the time to look your best and why not? You are at the Daytime Emmy’s for Heaven’s sake!  Get your hair and make-up done by a professional to not only make sure you look picture perfect but also so that your look will last all night.  Wear that once in a lifetime, black-tie gown. (A pro’s secret: what you wear under the dress is just as important as The Dress itself. Be sure to get the correct undergarments to suck, tuck or push out!)  With a big smile, you are now red carpet ready!

HOW IT WENT DOWN: Friday, June 20, 2008. The Big Day! The day of the Emmys is always a bit of a rat race. Trying to pick up your dress with no alteration issues, get your hair and make-up done while eating a turkey burger and trying not to move your head to much while your hair stylist is curling your hair right next to your ear. Oh, it’s very glamorous! I was a bit late to the red carpet because I was so busy socializing the time past me by, but I made it. I absolutely loved my dress by Ella Zilan and of course the earrings were my own Lowd Suga’ design.

This was my first year presenting and I couldn’t think of anywhere else I would have wanted to be that night. Of course, I was a little sad that none of our nominees won, but I thought we represented well. After the Emmys, NBC threw a great party with lots of delicious food, drinks and dancing. A few of us whooped it up on the dance floor and had such a great time.

While it will probably take until next year to recover, I hope you all enjoyed watching the Emmy’s and getting a little peek behind the scenes with me.  And thanks, as always, for your unwavering support for daytime television.  The soaps wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for our wonderful fans!!

Stay tuned!!
Arianne
