Michael Park, Maura West (Jack and Carly, As the World Turns) (c) PGPIn Part 1 of www.Soapdom.com's interview with Roger Newcomb, we learned how he got connected with Broadway Video and SoapClassics, how he worked with them to choose just the right episodes for the first As the World Turns DVD collection and some of his thoughts on the future of the digitized versions of Procter & Gamble soap operas, As the World Turns, Guiding Light, Another World and others.

Our last question to him in Part 1 was as a producer, would he consider producing new episodes of the P&G soaps should this DVD collection and hopefully others prove successful?  Here's his response...

“Yes, I think the fan base is there. It will be interesting to see what Prospect Park will do (with their TOLN – The Online Network.).  That is a totally different undertaking they are doing. So we’ll see what happens.”

According to Newcomb, if this first set of As the World Turns DVDs does well, SoapClassics has every intention to do more. “If no one bought them, they may think twice about digitizing the thousands of tapes in the hallway. So it’s all sort of contingent on how these sell.”

Meaning it is up to you guys, the fans.  If you want more As the World Turns and Guiding Light and Another World, etc, show SoapClassics the interest exists by purchasing your copy of the first set of DVDs.

If all goes as planned you can expect online streaming of classic World Turns episodes the first quarter of 2012.  “SoapClassics has a road map, but I don’t know how far they will go if it doesn’t catch on. But that’s sort of out of my realm,” Newcomb admitted.

Plus, if online sales do well, we can expect to see As the World Turns and Guiding Light DVDs available in places like Wal-Mart and Target in about a year from now.

“Mass distribution is where the P&G shows will fair really well,” Newcomb believes.  “My sisters and I grew up on Guiding Light. If they saw a classic episode DVD of Guiding Light online at the checkout, even if they hadn’t watched Guiding Light in years, they would grab it.”

Newcomb and I agree that fans of the P&G soaps have been chomping at the bit for someone to deliver their favorite soaps to them once again.  SoapClassics is set up to do a fantastic job with this.

“Broadway Video (the parent company of SoapClassics) does digitizing and distribution. They are the perfect company to do this,” believes Newcomb.

Before ending our conversation, Newcomb revealed one last scoop regarding this first DVD set.

“Even though SoapClassics has tapes from 1979 through the last show in 2010, we do get to see more scenes from even before 1979 because the episodes selected have flashbacks so there are some scenes in black & white as well as early stuff from the 1960s included as well.”

What are you waiting for?  Rush over to soapclassics.com and purchase your As the World Turns DVD set today.

I must say that I am so disappointed that more ATWT and P&G soap fans haven't been jumping up and down, screaming and shouting and screaming THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU form their rooftops. I am so 'over the moon happy' with everything that has been said in these two articles and also in We Love Soaps. We worked so hard for over a year to have this miracle happen, and it really seems to me, that the fans are still expecting to have absolutely EVERYTHING handed to them on a silver platter, without putting in any effort whatsoever to be in absolute awe for the gift we have been given. I started watching the DVDs yesterday, and I am in heaven. But, I am shaking my head at the other fans who simply say "I miss it and want it back". UGH!!!!

I think it's unfair to criticize P&G fans for not kissing the feet of these "miracle workers".

GL's cancellation came as a surprise. Rumors and vague promises flew that P&G exes were "doing EVERYTHING possible" to "save" the show.

Well....NOTHING happened. Except less than three months after GL's last episode, ATWT was cancelled.

While ONE box set is more than I ever expected to see in my lifetime, I will CELEBRATE if/when/as these promises become reality. Surely these "miracle workers" understand that loyalty is earned. A lot of us are still licking our wounds.
