Soapdom is saddened to report that the entertainment industry has lost another icon. Dick Clark, the producer of such television megahits like American Bandstand and New Year's Rockin Eve, not to mention producing the Daytime Emmy Awards broadcast for years and other live television entertainment programming, died from a massive heart attack today at St. John's hospital in Santa Monica, CA THR is reporting.
According to TMZ, Clark went in for an outpatient procedure on Tuesday, but passed away today. He was 82.
Known for years as the perpetual teenager, Clark, who's American Bandstand helped launch the music careers of too many stars to mention, never seemed to age. In 2002, he appeared in an episode of "The Other Half" along with Mario Lopez and both were asked to sample a new anti-aging skin care product for men.
He suffered a debilitating stroke a number of years ago, from which he worked hard to overcome, but was never quite the same. In the late 2000s, he partnered with Ryan Seacrest to help host New Year's Rockin Eve.
"I am deeply saddened by the loss of my dear friend Dick Clark. He has truly been one of the greatest influences in my life," Seacrest just tweeted. "My thoughts and prayers are with his family."
As are ours here at Soapdom. Both the music and broadcast industries have lost a great man. May he rest in peace.
