Dear Suds Buds,

Hope you all had a very happy holiday, and an enjoyable Spring Break.  Now it is back to school and back to work, but at least everyone should be well-rested and ready to hit the grindstone again!

On Wednesday, April 28, 2004 NBC will tie in their daytime line up to their prime time line up when Rocco DiSpirito, the hunky owner of The Restaurant, NBC’s prime time reality show about succeeding in the cutthroat world of restauranteuring, guest stars as  himself on Days of our Lives.  It’s no wonder that DiSpirito is making an appearance on Days this month. The second season of The Restaurant begins airing again in prime time on NBC beginning Monday, April 19, 2004.  Convenient, no?

But NBC is not the only network combining prime time programming with daytime shows.  Just tonight on CBS’s Two and a Half Men-A-Thon, one episode featured a storyline where Charlie Sheen’s character fixes up Jon Cryer’s character with an actress named Desiree, who just happens to be a fictional star from The Young and the Restless.  Cryer’s character, it turns out, is well versed in the soap world, knowing all about Desiree and how she was honored by Soap Opera Digest and revitalized Y&R, all fictionally, of course as there is no real actor named Desiree affiliated with Y&R.  However, Y&R did get quite a few plugs on Two and a Half Men tonight!

Of course, the single most predominant use of this daytime/primetime tie in strategy has got to be the storyline involving Friend's Joey Tribianni and his gig as Dr. Drake Rammoré on Days of our Lives.  This one has always posed a bit of a conundrum for me, however, as Joey lives in New York City, and Days of our Lives tapes in Los Angeles. This makes for one heck of a commute!  We know that Friends is centered in and around New York because they gather at Central Perk, a pun on the phrase, Central Park.  Ross works at the Museum of Natural History in New York, Rachel works for Ralph Lauren in New York, and Joey works for Days of our Lives in LA but is home in time to hang with his homies at Central Perk each night.

Why not have Joey work on a NY-based soap?  Because NBC has no soaps that tape in NY and since they are into this primetime/daytime tie in thing, odds are they won't promote another networks' daytime drama.  Guess Joey must use the Pine Valley transporter, that unique piece of machinery that gets characters from point A to B in seconds flat.  Oh wait.  Pine Valley is on another network.  He can't be borrowing their transporter.  See, I am as stumped as ever on this one!

Still, I think this is a great thing – network’s marketing their daytime shows in prime time and their prime time shows in daytime.  Why not, right?  Nothing wrong with expanding the audience.  Or is it apples and oranges?  What do you think?  Let me know in the Criticize the Critic folder on the Soapdom.com message boards.

Til the top of next week,
