I have always loved the summer. Romantic walks on the beach at sunset. Birds tweeting outside the window at dawn. Daylight lasts into the night. Drinks are frozen. Vacation! LOL I hope that all of you take advantage of the summertime to spend some quality time with friends and family.
Which is why TRO's regular Monday night All-Soaps Chat will be canceled till after Labor Day! I will miss you all till then, but trust that you will still come to TRO's chat rooms, venting and praising your favorite shows at your leisure. You never know when I may pop to say hello! Then, after Labor Day, I will resume hosting the regular Monday night All-Soaps Chat. And who knows? There may be some other surprises in place for you guys at that time, too! Stay tuned.
In the meantime, you can always post your comments on TRO's Message Boards. I read the Boards several times a day, and respond as much as possible! Hope to see you posting.
Truth is, I love "meeting" cyber soap fans, either online, on the phone, in email, on the Message Boards, or in person. You are such a great bunch of folks. This past week I had the pleasure of meeting (in person) several All My Children fans who came into LA from New York, Florida, and other parts of California. I also had a delightful phone conversation with a 35-year long As The World Turns fan from New Jersey! A young Passions fan sent me an articulate email asking that I clear up some confusing issues for her in regard to the timelines on the show, and every Passions fan wants to know what's happening with Taylor Anne Mountz (Kay)!
It's very interesting hearing all the various vents and praises. True fans have both. They are the most loyal and dedicated and also the most chagrinned when they feel their shows are disappointing them.
I am always amazed that regardless of the show or network, much of the venting is exactly the same. Here are some of the more common areas of concern: "Not enough story for veteran characters. Newbies we don't care about. Too much focus on depressing stories. Favorite characters relegated to back burner. The writing's gone downhill. I couldn't wait to tune in every day, now I fast forward."
Fans of all shows take heart. You are not the only ones disappointed in your particular favorite. There are disgruntled fans for every show!
So, why continue to watch? Why should eZines like Turtle Run continue to promote the genre and the stars? Because there are tons of good reasons to tune in everyday. A character that makes you smile as soon as they appear on screen. A story that is so far-fetched, it makes you scream at the tv and release all sorts of pent up tensions! A love story that finally pans out. A villain who at last gets their just desserts. And I am sure that you have your very own reasons for tuning in. Please share them with us on the TRO Message Boards in the Criticize the Critic folder. What keeps you tuning in, even if there are some things you are not happy about? Or, in your opinion, do you feel that soaps are doomed and why? Felicia Minei Behr, new Sr. VP, Daytime Programming at ABC, thinks that soaps could be doomed, unless more romance is brought back into the mix. (TV Guide interview, June 24-30, 2000.) Speaking of Behr, TRO's AMC fans are ecstatic at Behr's return to the ABC network. According to some die-hard As the World Turns fans, however, they couldn't wait for her to get gone from their show! Interesting. Guess what's good for the goose isn't necessarily good for the gander. Or to borrow from another worn out clich: "One soap fan's loss is another soap fan's gain!"
Emmy Award-winning actor, Steve Burton, will reprise the role of Jason Morgan on General Hospital for six weeks. His first airdate will be Friday, August 25, 2000. Burton portrayed the character of Jason Morgan Quartermaine from 1991 and left GH in 1999 to pursue other interests. He can be seen co-starring in the upcoming Steven Speilberg television series Semper Fi, which is scheduled to begin airing early next year. With Jason back in town, expect some surprises. As you know, he is the only man that Carly (Sarah Brown) has ever truly loved. He returns just as Carly and Sonny (Maurice Benard) reach a critical point in their relationship. Jason will also have some tense encounters with AJ (Billy Warlock), as well as the rest of the Quartermaines. "We have some very exciting story planned," said GH executive producer, Wendy Riche, "and we are thrilled that Steve could be a part of it." To which Burton added: "General Hospital is like family to me, so it will be nice to spend time back at home!" Burton won the Daytime Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series in May of 1999. He is newly married and lives in LA with his wife Sheree. Welcome back Steve, and GH fans be sure to tune in! I have a feeling things will definitely be heating up in Port Charles in late August!
In more GH casting news, Jacqueline Aries will play Sherry, a friend of Alison's that flirts with Juan at the rave, making Emily jealous. Her first airdate will be Friday, June 30, 2000. She will again air on Monday, July 17, 2000. Marc Brett will play Zander, who slips a drug into Emily's beverage at the rave. His first airdate will be Friday, June 30, 2000.
On Port Charles, Kelly Monaco joins the cast as Livvie. Monaco was most recently seen in the comic teen thriller Idle Hands along side Devon Sawa and Seth Green. Other feature credits include Mumford, and BASEketball. She was also featured in 12 episodes of Baywatch, and recurred in the Digital Entertainment Network's Frat Ratz. Her first airdate is Friday, July 7, 2000 when her character pays a visit to a sickly Dr. Rachel Locke (Kimberlin Brown).
Also on Port Charles, Frances Bay has been cast in the role of Leah Cochrane. She appears for a brief stint as a woman befriended by Dr. Ian and Lucy Coe. Her first airdate is Tuesday, July 18, 2000. Bay is probably best known for her role as the loveable grandmother to Adam Sandler'sHappy Gilmore. She has worked in a number of feature films including Inspector Gadget, Krippendorf's Tribe, In the Mouth of Madness, Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me (as well as the tv series), Single White Female, and Arachnophobia. Her extensive tv credits range from The Hughley's and Seinfeld, to Hill Street Blues and Happy Days.
On Days of Our Lives, Joe Swetow plays Perry, the Porn Producer, on Wednesday, June 28, 2000. Glenn Taranto returns as the strip club manager on Thursday, June 29, 2000. Aaron Van Wagner and Heather Olson continue their reign of terror at Salem High School during the week of June 26-30, 2000.
Last but not least, AMC fans take note! Eva La Rue (who has apparently dropped the "Callahan"), and Grant Show (Melrose Place) portray two of the last people on earth in Ice, ABC's exciting action thriller original movie for television. La Rue and Show struggle to survive a cataclysmic event that will end civilization as we know it. In the story, the earth enters the threshold of a new Ice Age, and LA begins to feel the effects of the oncoming debacle, as the sun is extinguished by massive sun spots and snow rapidly accumulates. Only one man, Dr. Norman Kistler (Udo Kier) who specializes in the study of solar phenomena, understands the seriousness of this unstoppable, apocalyptic event, although he is being labeled an alarmist by the President's top advisors. Enter LA police detective Robert Drake (Show) and his girlfriend Alison (La Rue) who are two of a small, disparate group of people who's fates are inextricably entwined as temperatures drop dangerously low and panic sweeps Los Angeles, the country and around the world. The suspense mounts as Drake and his extended "family" battle to overcome the seemingly insurmountable weather conditions and put aside their bitter personal differences in order to reach what will be their sole chance for survival. But who will be left to start over? Tune in to ABC on Saturday, July 22, 2000 from 8:00-10:00 PM to find out!
