Hi Suds Buds,
Hope you all had a Happy Halloween and that you remained safe from the abundance of ghosts and goblins that tend to lurk the neighborhood this time of year. Which brings me to the USA Network's presentation of Dark Prince: The True Story of Dracula. Unfortunately, I missed it. Did any of you see it? The television critic (Steven Linan) in the Los Angeles Times was less than thrilled with the overall project. However, he did say that star, Rudolf Martin (ex Anton, AMC), held his own, and that his performance was decent. Apparently, the storytelling was a little too lumbering and ponderous for Linan's taste. (Clearly, he has never watched a soap! :o) Of particular interest is the fact that Martin opened this season of Buffy the Vampire Slayer playing the same character, Count Vlad Dracula. He does the accent really well, I guess. LOL. However, I hope that Martin is able to find other types of roles, as it would be convenient to keep casting him as the dread Transylvanian (not-so) nobleman. Which was the point of the USA Network's take on the Dracula story. Vlad wasn't really an undead, blood-sucking man/bat. Heck no. He was just a guy with excessive testosterone trying to free his country from the tyranny of the Turks, while wreaking vengeance on those who murdered his father. Interesting, and maybe the way it really happened. However, the man/bat thing probably makes for a better scary movie.
SuperSoap Weekend and FanFest! This coming weekend, November 11 and 12, 2000 marks the first time ever that both ABC and NBC host major fan events in Orlando, Florida. It's the ABC's Fifth Annual SuperSoap Weekend at Disneyworld, and the First Annual NBC FanFest at Universal Studios Islands of Adventure. (See Seeing Stars below for further information.) Between both networks, close to one hundred soap celebrities will be on hand within a 15-mile radius to meet and greet their fans. (Next year, CBS has got to host an event at SeaWorld, piggybacking on the same weekend! Can you imagine? Wouldn't that be amazing? LOL) If you are going to either or both events this year, please share your experiences with us on the Turtle Run Message Boards. You can even upload photos! I'd love to hear how you all enjoyed the festivities, and so would everyone who is not able to make it this year. If you are still debating whether to attend or not, there is a little time left to get your tickets and book your accommodations. Who knows? You may even run into yours truly at some point during the weekend. To all those who will be attending, here's to having a blast and a half!
General Hospital Gets New Head WriterIn the wake of the much discussed exit of former GH head writer, Bob Guza, ABC announced on Wednesday, November 1, 2000 that Michele Val Jean has been named new headwriter, effective immediately. Val Jean, who has held the post of associate headwriter since 1996, will be joined by Elizabeth Korte, who will serve as a writer on the headwriting team. Prior to this promotion, Korte was an associate headwriter since 1997. According to Wendy Riche, EP of GH, Val Jean and Korte have a significant history with General Hospital. "Their noteworthy story contributions, along with their innate understanding of the characters, make them a natural choice for this team," she said. Val Jean began as an editor/script writer on GH in January, 1993. She was then promoted to associate head writer. Prior to joining GH, Val Jean was a script writer on Generations, and an editor/scriptwriter on Santa Barbara. She began her writing career under producer Jeri Taylor (Star Trek Voyager) who gave Val Jean her big break writing two episodes of Jake and the Fatman. Korte joined GH in March1994 in script continuity. She wrote her first script and sold her first long story idea (Jason Quartermaine/Morgan's brain damage) in the fall of 1995. She was promoted to associate head writer in December 1997. Congratulations to both Val Jean and Korte on their new headwriting responsibilities. Material from the new headwriting team will begin airing in February 2001.
Happiness is TV SoapsAn interesting story arrived from London over the wire services back in October 1998 and was picked up by the New York Daily News. It stated that to have a happier life, all one had to do was watch a lot of soaps, and don't even think of cheating on your spouse! According to Oxford University professor Michael Argyle, who spent 11 years analyzing thousands of questionnaires about what makes people happy, having one close relationship and a network of friends was the key to happiness. Argyle's research found that marriage was one of the most guarantees of happiness, especially for men. The least happy were those who are divorced or separated. Extramarital affairs brought more unhappiness than happiness, due to the damage that they did to the marriage. "Having two people who give you support and company could be a good thing," Argyle said in regard to having an affair. "However, (affairs) rarely work out." He continued by saying that "the results on the television watching (of soaps) was most perplexing. People who watch soap operas seem to gain a great deal of happiness from it." Argyle's theory as to why that is so? "The viewers are making imaginary friends." My theory based on Argyle's research? The viewers are having imaginary affairs. LOL Okay, come on fess up. Who out there is guilty of my theory? Just kidding. ;o)
Letters to the Editor"I would like to now if any of the Passion's cast had their own website. I heard Sheridan and Luis did. If you know their homepage address PLEASEEEE PLEASEEEEE let me know. Thanks a whole lot!" xpookiex
You are in luck! And you are absolutely correct. Both Sheridan (McKenzie Westmore) and Luis (Galen Gering) both have official websites. You can find them by clicking the Turtle Run "Links" page.
"First, very cool website, this is my first visit-but not last. Very informative! Can you please print some information (stats, where to write to, etc) on Chad Brannon aka Zander Smith from General Hospital. His character is a welcomed addition to the show, and the storyline of a bad guy with heart is so endearing. He's made some mistakes but genuinely feels sorry for them, and his chemistry with co-star Amber Tamblyn (Emily Quartermaine) is divine and believable! They generate some sparks the readers totally love! Thanks a bunch!! Mars_8664
Thank you so much for your kind words regarding Turtle Run. It's wonderful that you have noticed the work of newcomer Chad Brannon on General Hospital, and I am sure that he would love hearing from you. Contact him at General Hospital c/o ABC's Prospect Avenue address in Los Angeles (see below), or visit his official website at http://www.chadbrannon.com The site is still under construction, but there is a link to email the webmaster for further information on the launch of the site.
"How is Brady Black related to Victor Kariokis. I thought I heard Brady call him Granddad? Is Victor Brady's Grandfather and how is that so?" mpersinger1
Right you are! Brady Black is indeed the grandson of Victor Kariokis. Here's how. Brady is the son of Isabella. Isabella is the daughter of Victor, making Victor Brady's grandfather.
"Hey Linda! I was wondering if maybe you could create message boards for Titans or Dawson's Creek? I know that you have the Primetime board, but maybe more people would post if there were separate ones. Just a suggestion! I'm glad I came back to TR! It's fun here! :) Hope you're doing well." Luis4Sheridan
Your wish is our command! We now have separate message board forums for both Dawson's Creek and Titans. Go to the main page of the Turtle Run Message Boards and scroll down to the Primetime Soaps section. I hope everyone who is watching these shows joins in the discussion here at Turtle Run! Thanks for the suggestion to create these message boards. GMTA
" I really love your site but I was wondering why you don't have week reviews for The Young and the Restless? Do you not like that soap opera? Or is there some other reason? Thanks for making such a great site." Stephanie
Thanks for the kind words about Turtle Run. Just for the record, I love the Young & the Restless. It was my Mom's favorite show. From the hours of noon till 1 PM ET you could not disturb her. Even a phone call from my dad was forbidden during that time. LOL Both Y&R and B&B are the last two shows that we are working on to bring you Sneak Peeks and weekly recaps. Sometimes these things take time. Please be patient as we work to bring you more on Y&R and B&B.
"I am very disappointed in All My Children. Today was the first day in two full weeks that Dimitri was shown. I have been waiting patiently while suffering through the new, young characters for a chance to see my favorite actor perform. He was on for about 4 minutes. I am livid!!!! What is wrong with the people at All My Children? Why have they turned the show into a Greenlee/Leo/Bianca show? Look at your ratings people...the writing is on the wall. Please...get Michael Nader a front burner storyline and help to raise the pitiful ratings of All My Children." M
Many AMC fans are wondering the same thing and are emailing TRO regarding their dissatisfaction in regard to the frontburner stories continually focusing on the "GenX" crowd, with only snippets of story devoted to veteran actors, like Michael Nader. The best of both worlds would be some sort of better balance between the younger group and the veteran characters, but somewhere out there in Pine Valley there is a plan. We, as viewers, are just not privy to it and must watch as it unfolds before us. But isn't that the point? LOL Speaking of Michael Nader, TRO is also getting email from fans livid that he has not yet been scheduled to attend Super Soap Weekend this year. However, that may be a function of many things. A major one being that he may not even be able to attend for whatever reason. It may not all be the networks doing. Just a possibility. FYI, for the week of October 23-27, 2000, AMC was the #4 ranked program with a 2.7 rating and a 19 share, delivering 1.7 million women in the 18-49 age group. Thanks to all the AMC fans who wrote us about AMC.
"I lurk a lot on your message boards. There has been some speculation on the Days of Our Lives message boards regarding Louise Sorel being wooed by the show to return as Vivian. Is there any truth to this or is it just a rumor?" Lola
According to Ms. Sorel's agent, they have not been contacted by anyone. Not the network, not the show. As far as they know, Ms. Sorel has not been contacted directly, either. But that is not to say that rumblings in this regard have not begun in some small office somewhere, and TRO's posters got wind of them somehow. It would be nice to see Vivian back in Salem. Let's keep our fingers crossed. Nothing would happen officially, however, until the agent is contacted and has the opportunity to negotiate a deal with the producers.
