Dear Suds:

There is so much to share with you this week, let's get right to it!

The 29th Annual Daytime Emmy Awards Boast Big Surprises

By Jessica Radloff with Linda Marshall-Smith

Wow! What an awards show! On Friday, May 17, 2002 the 29th Annual Daytime Emmys, telecast from Madison Square Garden in New York City, the first major awards show hosted in New York since the terrorist attacks of 9/11, was nothing short of surprising.  Hosted by the Price is Right's, Emmy winner Bob Barker, the show was spectacular, stunning and touching. Highlights included the 50th Anniversary of Guiding Light presentation, the lifetime Achievement Award for former NATAS president, the late John Cannon, and the presentation, along with Kelly Ripa, of an award by three of New York City's finest, a transit policewoman, a firefighter and an NYPD officer.

Before we get on to the winners, there were two major moments that were sure to leave soap fans talking for days!

Number One: Susan Lucci's mistaken reaction! Poor Lucci--while waiting off stage (she just finished presenting Peter Bergman {Jack, Y&R} with his best actor win), B&B's Justin Torkildson (Rick) and Adrienne Frantz (Amber) announced that fellow co-star Susan Flannery (Stephanie) was the winner of this year's Outstanding Actress Emmy. Although the camera showed Lucci mouthing "Flannery?" to an individual nearby, that same person then made it seem as though it was Lucci's name that was actually called. In utter disbelief, Lucci began walking to the podium to collect her award when she realized that Flannery was already up there preparing to give her acceptance speech. Although it was no one's fault, the moment was extremely awkward and embarrassing. However, knowing the kind of person Susan Lucci is, we're sure she handled the moment with nothing but grace and praise for fellow nominee Flannery. In a soundbite that aired on LA radio the next day, 6-time Emmy winner Rosie O'Donnell admitted that she may have contributed to the embarrassing situation. O'Donnell was also backstage, after just accepting her 6th win for Outstanding Talk Show Host. She thought Lucci was named as the winner! Was O'Donnell the person to whom Lucci turned in the confusion? After hearing Rosie's confession, sounds like it might have been.

Secondly, the biggest surprise of the night came when One Life to Live was named Outstanding Daytime Drama. Coming off a highly successful week of live shows, the richly deserving daytime serial wasn't given a serious chance at taking home the award. Although Executive Producer Gary Tomlin has taken the show to new heights, most experts believed the award would go to As the World Turns or All My Children. Enthusiastic and elated, Tomlin graciously thanked ABC and a terrific cast "led by Erika Slezak!" The entire cast joined him on stage to bask in their award's glow--a first in the show's 30-year plus history! Congratulations, OLTL--you deserved it!

Other funny moments and goofs: While accepting ATWT's win for Outstanding Writing, head writer Hogan Sheffer accidentally thanked those at ABC, instead of CBS--the network on which his show airs! Could the rumors be true that Sheffer is indeed in talks with ABC to switch networks and bring his magic to ABC's fledgling-in-the-ratings soaps? Regardless, it was a major snafu and due to the time constraints placed by the ever vigilant dick clark productions, Sheffer lost valuable seconds as he recovered from the mistake. In addition, Jennifer Finnigan's (Bridget, B&B) win for Outstanding Younger Actress was extremely emotional, but ended on a funny note when she thanked her parents for being her "source of strength and inspiration." While wiping away tears, she added, "this is for you, but I'm keeping it!" Also, when Peter Bergman jumped on stage to collect his Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actor, he did so with former co-star Susan Lucci at his side, clutching tightly to her. Bergman originally started his career opposite Lucci while portraying AMC's Dr. Cliff Warner.

CBS is to be congratulated for incorporating some new elements into the broadcast. Of note, the nominated actors sharing their thoughts about what drives their characters, and the 4 nominated dramas being presented in tandem to a memorable video performance.

Aside from the few goofs and flubs previously mentioned, the show went off without a hitch, and the actors loved every minute of the glamorous and fun-filled evening. Here is the full list of soap winners at this year's Emmy Awards:

Outstanding Daytime Drama: One Life to Live (ABC)

Fashion at the Daytime Emmys

By Jessica Radloff

The news in the papers and the magazines will be who won what award, but for those of us who want the real dish, here's a tad on who wore what!

Although soap actors are gorgeous people, they do occasionally make the wrong fashion choice on the big night. It's easy to understand how that can happen: so much emphasis is put on preparing, that it is easy for a nominee, presenter, or attendee to go overboard. But thankfully for this year's group, you would be hard pressed to find a star that didn't deserve a thumbs up!

Let's start with the men. Doug Davidson (Paul, YR) and Ty Treadway (Troy, OLTL) looked like a million bucks in their dapper tux and suit, respectively. They were definitely among this year's best-dressed men! Justin Torkildson (Rick, BB), with fiancée Bonnie, decided to go the casual route with a basic black suite. Although the couple looked adorable and very much in love, they were dressed a little too casually for the black-tie affair.  Making his way down the red carpet as well was Y&R's Thad Luckinbill (JT) who was accompanied by his twin brother. Matt Cedeno (Brandon, DAYS), one of People Magazine's "50 Most Beautiful for 2002," lived up to the distinction on Emmy night, looking great in a dark suit with a purple tie.

Now onto the women. Red was the choice of the night as many stars opted for a standout color in their wardrobe! Following close behind was beige and cream colored clothing, in addition to basic black. However, you could put most of these actresses in a paper bag and they'd still be a knockout! Leslie Kay (Molly, ATWT) looked positively radiant in a beige dress with her hair tied up in loose curls. Following in Leslie's footsteps was Y&R's Kelly Kruger (Mac) in a beige colored low-cut dress with a high slit. Although not exactly beige, a white-clad Tamara Braun (Carly, GH) wore a slinky dress, and GL's Crystal Chappell (Olivia) opted for a gray lace, stomach-bearing, two-piece outfit by Pamela Dennis.

Some of those women shining bright in red were McKenzie Westmore (Sheridan, PAS), Susan Lucci (Erica, AMC), Kristina Sisco (Abigail, ATWT), Alison Sweeney (Sami, DAYS), Lisa Rinna (Billie, DAYS), Tonya Walker Davidson (Alex, OLTL) and Kelly Ripa (Hayley, AMC). Every single one of them looked absolutely stunning, especially when accompanied by great accessories such as Kelly's husband, Mark Consuelos (Mateo, AMC) and Lisa's husband, Harry Hamlin (of L.A. Law fame).

Although they still looked fantastic Martha Byrne (Lily, ATWT) and Melody Thomas Scott (Nikki, YR) were the only fashion misses of the night. Byrne's dress had a little too much flower power, and Scott's cream orange dress that she wore down the red carpet was a tad too low-cut. Scott later wore a ball gown dress draped with stars and stripes for the telecast. Regardless, some of this year's Oscar nominees could have taken some pointers from the stars of daytime--or rather, the stars of fashion!

All My Children's DillionHeads Get Shot in the Arm

AMC fans of the Dillions set your VCR's. On July 3, 2002, Tim Dillion returns to Pine Valley. The role of Timmy was originated by Michael Schulman in 1989. In 1991, the role was recast with Tommy Michaels, who had a successful run as Timmy until the character went off to study abroad sometime in 2000 or 2001. AMC newcomer, Dylan Fergus, will take over the role on July 3. The character of Tim Dillion is Hayley's cousin. He comes back to Pine Valley during his family's time of need.

With the return of Tim, can Janet, Trevor and Amanda be far behind? James Kiberd, who played Trevor from 1989 to 2001, is about to be begin a summer season appearing in Shakespeare productions in northern California.  If TPTB do decide to bring back others of the Dillion clan, will those roles also be recast, or will some familiar faces likewise be returning to PV?

Time will tell. Meanwhile, how will Tim shake things up in Pine Valley this summer? Tune in and see!

SOAPnet Gets New Look

On May 14, 2002 SOAPnet, ABC Cable Networks Group's 24-hour soap opera channel, announced that it will unveil a dramatic new on-air look and logo Sunday, June 9, 2002. The new look was designed to make the channel, dedicated to the soap genre, contemporary and accessible to viewers.

"Our network contains the world of soaps," said Deborah Blackwell, General Manager of SOAPnet. "Our new logo and look captures the glamour, drama and fun of the soap world. The re-design reflects the passion our viewers have for the network and the genre."

The new look is a complete re-design of all current on-air elements including the network logo, ids, online ids, promo packaging, break opens and closes, menu pages and packaging for numerous interstitial programs. These elements combined redefine and update the SOAPnet brand image. The re-branding was overseen by Vice President of Marketing, Sherri York and her team.

The re-design taps into the core of SOAPnet's brand incorporating the essential components of a good soap opera -- passion, drama, suspense, intrigue and romance. Popular soap stars were shot on 35mm film sharing stories and testimonials about what soap operas and the genre mean to them. These insights will be used through out the new package as IDs, interstitials and promo elements.

A new color palette and original music will complement the design elements and brand the network with a signature look and sound. An original signature SOAPnet pneumonic has been composed that will also be launched. The three new primary colors for the network are warm red, orange and yellow tones accented by black and white. Tune into SOAPnet on Sunday, June 9, 2002 and be among the first to see the re-design!

OLTL's Linda Dano Has A Call to Action on Alzheimer's Disease in Honor of Her Parents: 'Don't Let the Same Thing Happen To You'

When Linda Dano (Rae, OLTL) had to make healthcare decisions for her father who suffered with Alzheimer's disease (AD), information came too late. As a result, she stood by helplessly while her dad, her "John Wayne," turned into a stranger before her eyes. "When my dad first started acting differently, my parents lived in California and I was in New York. I would talk to my dad on the phone and I knew something seemed strange. But, because I didn't know what to look for or what questions to ask I thought my dad was acting differently as a result of normal aging," explains Linda. That is why Linda recently joined with the National Family Caregivers Association (NFCA) and Novartis Pharmaceuticals Corporation to offer a free "IDentify Alzheimer's Disease (ID.A.D.) Resource Kit" designed to help people distinguish between normal aging and early signs of possible Alzheimer's disease.

But even when people are aware that there might be a problem, most are not taking action. According to a recent nationwide survey, among adults who have experienced symptoms that they thought might be indicative of Alzheimer's disease, almost 7 out of 10 have never spoken with a physician about their symptoms, and half have never spoken about their concerns with friends or family.

This spring, Dano will launch phase two of the ID.A.D. Program: "ID.A.D. -- A Call to Action" in honor of her parents. During May and June, people requesting an "ID.A.D. Resource Kit" will also receive a tangible "call to action" in the form of a free calling card to use to connect with their parents this Mother's Day and Father's Day. Getting information is only the first step. Knowing when and how to use it to take action is the next. Linda took that next step and put what she had learned through her experience with her dad to use. Last year when her mother started having increasing memory problems, she had it checked out right away. Thankfully, with her mother, it was not Alzheimer's disease.

Linda Dano, an accomplished Emmy-award winning TV and feature-film actress, talk show host, designer, spokesperson, entrepreneur, author and caregiver for her father who passed away from Alzheimer's disease in January 1996. She is participating in the "IDAD -- A Call to Action" campaign to help others in similar situations.

Free "IDAD Resource Kits" are available by calling toll free 1-877-439-3566 or visiting NFCA's Web site at http://www.nfcacares.org/. The comprehensive kit contains educational materials to help patients and caregivers in the early stages of the illness. People requesting a kit during May and June will also receive a free "Call to Action" calling card.

Ex GHer, Rena Sofer, to Star on "Just Shoot Me" Next Season

Emmy Award-winning actress Rena Sofer (ex Lois, GH, NBC's "Ed") has signed on for a starring role in NBC's hit comedy series "Just Shoot Me" for its seventh season. Sofer will join the show as Jack's (George Segal) newest hire, a guru of style who also becomes his confidante.

An accomplished primetime television and soap opera actress, Sofer received a 1995 Emmy Award for her performance as Lois Cerullo Ashton in the long-running daytime drama series "General Hospital." She is also known for her recent turns as district attorney Bonnie Hayne in NBC's "Ed" and ace reporter Grace Hall in "The Chronicle." She recently appeared in an episode of NBC's "Friends." Her other notable TV appearances include "Spin City," "Ellen," "Seinfeld," "Caroline in the City" and others. Sofer's feature film credits include "Traffic," "Keeping the Faith" and "A Stranger Among Us."

"Just Shoot Me" is set at the New York editorial offices of the fictional fashion magazine, Blush. It also stars Laura San Giacomo ("sex, lies and videotape"), George Segal ("Flirting with Disaster"), David Spade ("Saturday Night Live"), Wendie Malick ("Dream On") and Enrico Colantoni ("Galaxy Quest"). "Just Shoot Me" is produced by Universal Television. Judd Pillot, John Peaslee, Jon Pollack and series creator Steven Levitan are executive producers.

Daytime Drama Returns to 'Radio' at SoapCity(TM)

Soap opera fans now have a new way to relive classic episodes of two of television's most popular daytime dramas -- through online radio. Sony Pictures Digital Entertainment's SoapCity.com, The Soap Opera Capital of the World(R), is now launching SoapCity Radio(TM), the only place to get full-length, classic audio episodes of "The Young and the Restless" and "Days of our Lives" streamed directly to your computer. This new subscription-based service allows fans to listen to some of their favorite shows where and when they want to -- at home or in the office -- without commercial interruption. In addition, each scene is enhanced with synchronized photos and easy to follow character and location listings. A subscription to SoapCity Radio will also provide access to behind-the-scenes specials, exclusive photos, interactive bonuses and more.

The service debuted just in time for daytime's biggest event, the 29th Annual Daytime Emmy Awards, on May 17, 2002. The cost is $6.99 per month for access to a month's worth of episodes from "The Young and the Restless" and "Days of our Lives." SoapCity will rollout a new episode every weekday, and each episode will be available for a two week period from the day of posting. For a limited time, subscribers to SoapCity Radio will get a free two-week trial.

"SoapCity Radio is a way that fans can connect with and relive the histories of their favorite characters," said Mary Coller, vice president and general manager of SoapCity. "It's another way SoapCity is bringing a new media edge to two true American classics, radio and the soap opera."

The history of daytime drama began on radio in 1926 when household tips and home products were incorporated within "serials" geared toward housewives. The continuous dramas (or "operas") quickly became known as "soap operas" thanks to the abundance of soap products plugged during each show.

SoapCity Radio's classic content will commence with two of the most memorable storylines in soap opera history. For "The Young and the Restless" fans, modem mavens can jump right to the heart of daytime's longest-running catfight, with classic 1998 episodes showing Jill Foster and Catherine Chancellor (actresses Jess Walton and Jeannie Cooper) struggling for control of the Chancellor mansion. "Days of our Lives" picks up with a 1994 storyline focused on popular actress Deidre Hall and her character Dr. Marlena Evans, who becomes "possessed" when Satan comes back to Salem.

Real Broadcast Network(TM) (RBN), the content delivery network division of RealNetworks(R), Inc., will provide all back-end hosting and management for SoapCity Radio, including subscriber management, content distribution, e-commerce infrastructure and customer service.

"We are thrilled that fans will be using the RealOne Player to listen to classic episodes of top soap operas," said Nagesh Pabbisetty, vice president, Real Broadcast Network, RealNetworks, Inc. "SoapCity's new service is powered by RBN's Managed Subscription Service and will provide soap opera enthusiasts with an easy-to-use and compelling online experience."
