Jen's new friend on DAYS, A sudsy View, NBC in subtitles & more

Hi Suds Buds,

Are you all enjoying your summer? It is difficult for me to believe that we are half way through July already. Time flies when you are having fun.

Part of the summer fun for me is reading all your amazing comments on the Turtle-Run message boards.   Thank you for sharing your thoughts with us here at Turtle Run.

What's more, I am really enjoying the summer storylines on all the soaps. The double-wedding on Passions, the "who-killed-Colin" murder mystery on OLTL, Tad the Dad on AMC, the baby switcheroo on DOOL, Amber and Deacon on B&B, Billy and Mac and Jack and Phyllis on Y&R, Jack and Caleb on PC, and all the great summer music, like BBMak on "All My Children."  Ohhhhh.  I just love those guys!   I play their CD in my car, cruising with the top down on the Pacific Coast Highway!  LOL

What's been your favorite summer story so far?  Let us know on the Turtle-Run Message boards.

Lots of juicy tidbits to share with you today, so without further ado...

Q&A with Passions' Cristina Saralegui -- Part 2

On Monday, July 9. 2001, NBC daytime began airing "Days of our Lives" and "Passions" with closed-captioning in Spanish.  To help kick off this new programming strategy, "Passions" recruited Spanish talk show host, Cristina Saralegui to guest star as Tia Cristina, Theresa's (Lindsay Korman) aunt, in several episodes.  According to a spokesperson for the network, NBC is thrilled to have Cristina on "Passions."

Last week we brought you part one of the teleconference interview with Cristina.  We pick up today with part 2.

Q:  How did this role on "Passions" come about in the first place?  Did they approach you, or had you been putting yourself out there as an actor for an American show or American soaps?  And as a follow-up, can you talk about how you got started in show business and where you think this current role on "Passions" fits under that?

CS:  Actually I've been very concentrated on the Studio (see Note below) for the past year of my life.   Since last April or May it's been nuts.  For the first time we've used the Christina studio -- moving the whole staff. I've been basically working in three different offices for 12 years.  So, "Passions" wanted me for three episodes and my brother said, "Show them your tape, show them your tape!" So I showed them the tape and they said yes, and then it got complicated because for this storyline they needed me for two weeks.  I had to pre-tape ("The Cristina Show") and I was concerned about inventory.   There were a lot of issues.  So, basically I agreed.  It's great cross-promotion for both shows.  I respect Telemundo very much. I respect NBC for taking the risk and bringing me over and I think it's good for both of our markets and that's why I'm here. I started in show business as a magazine editor-in-chief.  I was the lady who launched "Cosmopolitan" first in Spanish in 1973, circulated all over Latin America.  I was their first writer and then I became their editor-in-chief for ten years.  In 1989 I (shifted gears) and started The Christina Show and I've been there ever since.  So, there must be a reason why I'm here (at "Passions."  Maybe we should ask the witch! LOL

NOTE:  Christina's studios are called Blue Dolphin Facilities.  There are three soundstages, one of which hosts The Christina Show. With this studio, Christina is the fourth woman in TV history to actually own her own production facilities.  The first being Mary Pickford in the thirties, the second being Lucille Ball, the third being Oprah Winfrey, and the fourth is Christina. She is the first Latina to ever do that.

Q:  Being that you have such a hectic schedule on your talk show, were you surprised, or chagrined at the pace of taping a soap opera?  Did you encounter any surprises?  Was it what you expected?  How was that experience for you -- going from a talk-show genre to the taping of 48 minutes of airtime for a soap?

CS:  Well, basically "The Cristina Show" is live on tape.  Totally unscripted, totally.  And on "Passions" everything is scripted. It's a huge difference.  The main difference is that we tape at night my lady because we can't get an audience in Florida, in Miami, after we start taping usually at 6 o'clock.  We've been taping at night for twelve years.  Now here, they sometimes have a call time 6 o'clock in the morning, so I basically got it in my head that I would at least be here half the day. They don't have Cuban coffee here, so I wasn't sure if I'd wake up.  That was the hardest part.  On the bright side, every single person here has treated us like family.  There's no cattiness. . I've never seen anybody being nasty.  The makeup people are great. I'm thrilled to be here.  I felt like I belonged from day one.

Q:  Some actors say the memorization is grueling on a daytime soap. Do you find that that has been difficult at all?

CS:  Well, I'm going through menopause, so I personally have no memory.  When I came here, I brought ginseng and ginko-baloba. I don't find (working on a soap) impossible.  You just have to know your lines and be prepared.  Of course, obviously, I didn't get a lot of lines because I'm a lone character doing a cameo.  I didn't expect to get an Oscar for this.  I have memorized stuff, and didn't find it that difficult really.

Q:  To what extent will your character be a villain or a hero on the soap?

CS:  I'm Christina, I can't be bad!  You know what, I'm just waiting for them to invite me back so I can do some nasty stuff here.

Q:  Anything you'd like to do someday (on "Passions"), that you haven't yet done?

CS:  Well, one of the things that I miss is everybody else talking to themselves and saying things, and (then they) have a flashback and they just look into the camera. So not this time, but maybe next time when I come back.

Q:  What extent to do you think the networks have in getting Hispanic actors/actresses on the shows? In what ways can they improve?

CS:  Well, I think they need to improve 150,000%.  I see a lot of Hispanic writers and production staff working.  I see a lot of that and I didn't realize it until I came to the set.  There are a lot of our people working, directing behind the scenes, and I would like to see more familiar faces in front of the camera.  I don't think it's necessary that you have to be dark-haired and dark-skinned for example.  The three kids that play my nephews and niece (on "Passions") are not Hispanic.  The only Hispanic one is Eva Tamargo Lemus (Pilar).  She's Cuban from Miami.  And the kids have mix.  They're Mediterranean, Greek, Italian, Portuguese, but they're not Hispanic, which I find fine, because if I'm going to fight for Hispanics getting non-Hispanic roles, like for someone like Jennifer Lopez, it is perfectly fine that a non-Hispanic face is Hispanic.  I have no problem with that.  It's called acting.  You play a lesbian, you're not a lesbian, you know what I mean? But I would like to see more chances given to Hispanic actors and actresses.

Q:  Do you think that will improve in the future?

CS:  Oh yes, but the reasons it's going to improve are for the wrong reasons. Obviously, they just want to get more of our viewers, but that's the only way to get them.

Q:  How many shows have you taped so far, or are you finished at this point?

CS:  This is my last day.  I did nine (days).

Q:  Did they do anything special your first day on the set? And next, has anything strange happened during your time taping, or did anything happen off the set?

CS:  Everything unexpected happens, but not behind the scenes.  Everything unexpected happens, believe me.  They have been totally special.   For example, the girl who plays my niece, Lindsay (Korman), Theresa, she was sitting in her wedding dress next to me and puts her head on my shoulder and fell asleep.  I mean, this girl doesn't know me.  They are really very nice kids.  I sit down and I talk to Juliet Mills after a scene and she's giving me English recipes for dishes.  I mean the stuff people talk about when we're not taping has nothing to do with what's going on camera.  I'm having a lot of fun.  Like, Galen (Gering, Luis), the guy who plays my nephew, is teaching me to do a dance that I can do on the (The Cristina) Show and yesterday he said, "but you have to give me credit!" And I said, "yeah! I'll give you credit."  I feel like I'm home.  I have three huge teenagers. . I'm home, I'm home.  I see the kids dancing around all the time.

Watch Cristina on "Passions" when she airs along with Emiliano Diez on July 12, 13, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20, 23 and 25.  For Part 1 of the teleconference interview with Cristina, see "Top of the Week" for Monday, July 9, 2001.

On "Sex in the City..."

Airing this week is episode #56 titled, "My Motherboard, My Self," where we get to find out what is so scary about support.  When Carrie's computer crashes, she learns that her independent ways may not be working so well.  In the meantime, Samantha loses a most valued possession.  While elsewhere, Charlotte revels in her newfound ability to take care of every little detail.  Later, Miranda suffers a personal crisis.  Her experience then leads everyone else to see things in a new light.

Premiering on Sunday, July 2001 is episode #57 titled, "Sex and the Country" where everyone wonders, in a relationship, when does the art of compromise become compromising? Carrie, the bona fide city gal, attempts to show Aidan her rustic side when she agrees to go to the country inn with him.  Speaking of being the country bumpkin, Samantha shows a farmer what he's been missing. SIZZLE ALERT! In the meantime, Charlote learns more about the relationship between Trey and his mother, while Miranda comforts Steve the only way she knows how.
