Happy Spring Holidays!

Hi Suds Buds:

Is it just me or is everyone amazed at how fast 2003 is going.  We are well into the second quarter already.  We are well into Springtime.   We’ve just enjoyed Passover and Easter holidays and now many of you teen and college-age fans are off on Spring Break.

Which brings me to this:  How come we never see Spring Break storylines on soap operas?  At least, there haven’t been any for the past 5 years or so.  Not on any soaps that I can remember, anyway. Have there ever been?

Stories about Spring Break would make sense, wouldn’t they? I mean, Spring Breaks have been big with high school and college kids for decades now.  I went to college in Florida.  U of F, to be precise.  Kids from all over the country would converge on places like Daytona Beach and Disneyworld.  In fact, kids from U of F would get recruited than hired by Disneyworld to play the Mickeys and Minnies and Goofys and Plutos during the Spring Break crush!

Don’t you think it would be fun to show some of the younger crowd on your favorite soap engaging in Spring Break-like activities?  A remote to Daytona Beach in Florida or Venice Beach in California might be really cool.  They could do an MTV-like blast of a Spring Break where characters like Marah, Marina, et al on Guiding Light could let loose. Or, Lucy and Aaron and Alison (well, they’d have to break Alison out of jail first. Now that would really put a new spin on Spring Break!) on As the World Turns.  Or, Maggie, Frank, and Bianca on All My Children – well, they are suddenly making Binky more responsible and more adult, now that she works at her mother Erica’s company, Enchantment, and is about to share a same sex kiss with co-worker Lena. Even so…

A Spring Break storyline could be a fun way to catapult storyline into new and different directions, and/or introduce a new character or two.  I can’t believe that they haven’t considered a Spring Break deal already.  Or, maybe they have but networks and/or sponsors shot them down? Although, my Marketing MBA tells me that it would/could be a sponsors dream.  What do you think?  Can you come up with a fun Spring Break storyline for your favorite show and characters?  Share it with us in the Criticize the Critic Folder on the Soapdom.com Message Boards .

Chicago television personality, Ryan Chiaverini, runs to honor mom

Northwestern Hospital and the Robert H. Lurie Cancer Center Foundation in Chicago recently held a Cancer Survivors Walk. It was the 24th annual to celebrate being cancer free and to honor the loved ones that lost their battle.

For Chicago TV personality, Ryan Chiaverini of ABC 7's Windy City Live, this was a very special and emotional day. Chiaverini participated in the 5K walk/run to honor his mother, Edna, who he lost a few months ago to cancer. He formed a team called 'Team Edna' and everyone wore T-Shirts with the logo 'Team Edna.'
