Dear Suds Buds,

Summer 2005 will prove to be a rife with harsh realities on a few soaps. Last week, a hurricane hit General Hospital and the denizens of Port Charles had to scramble. But let me tell you. That hurricane, scary as it was, is nothing compared to what’s ahead for the sleepy little New England town of Harmony.  Last Tuesday, NBC Daytime premiered the Passions Disaster storyline.  Fans and press were treated to a preview of the episode that will air on Tuesday, July 26.  Man oh man. Living here in southern California, I’ve been in a few earthquakes. But that’s nothing compared to this mega shaker on Passions. It must last for ten full minutes!  Lives will definitely be changed.  But the earthquake is not the only disaster to hit Harmony.  Shortly after the quake, as denizens are gathering their thoughts, finding their loved ones and salvaging their belongings, a thunderous roar is heard.   Turns out, the huge earthquake is just the icing on the cake for Passions.  Stay tuned to Soapdom.com this week and next as we share with you more on Passions Disaster. It always warms my heart to see soap stars appear in other genres, be it prime time or feature films.  Recently, I saw the DVD of Tyler Perry’s “Diary of a Mad Housewife,” starring (among others), Y&R’s own Shemar Moore (Malcolm).  I’ve had the pleasure of interviewing Moore, who is always more than gracious.  I’ve had the pleasure of seeing his work on Y&R, where he consistently delivers.  But I was most pleasantly surprised by his performance in Mad Housewife. He was tough, yet vulnerable. Soft spoken, yet authoritative.  Unassuming but forceful.  Oh, and did I mention oh so sexy?  For those of you who may not have seen this yet, I won’t spill the beans on whether he gets the girl in the end or not, but I highly recommend renting or buying this DVD to add to your collection of fun, outlandish and touching romantic comedies.  “Diary of a Mad Housewife also stars Tyler Perry, who plays a number of roles, including dressing in drag as the family matriarch.  Other familiar faces include The Practice’s Steve Harris as the nasty husband, Kimberly Elise as the Mad Housewife, and Cicely Tyson as the housewife’s mom.

To segue from soaps to song, veteran soap fans out there may be interested to know that Carol King (singer/songwriter of renown for over 40 years) has a new two cd collection called “The Living Room Tour.”  She proudly states that she’s 62-years old, but ya know what? It hasn’t slowed her down a bit. She is still rocking.  Not only will you find her biggest solo hits like “You’ve Got a Friend,” and “It’s Too Late,” but she also does a medley of songs she wrote or co-wrote with ex husband Gerry Goffin that took the 60’s by storm.  I love listening to this collection as I am working.  If you’re a fan of Carol King this is definitely the cd set to get.
