Friday, June 25, 1999, was an historic day for soaps. It was the last episode of Another World. How do you say goodbye to a show that has entertained millions for 35 years? How does the show say goodbye to it's millions of loyal fans? I think the freeze-frame of the "toast" that closed the episode accomplished it quite well. Another World may be gone, but here's to new beginnings.
Many of AWs actors will be moving on to entertain us in other daytime shows. Four stars (Tom Eplin, Jensen Buchanan, Stephen Schetzner, and Lisa Peluso) are heading to one CBS show: As the World Turns. One star, Linda Dano, is heading to four ABC shows. (One Life to Live, General Hospital, Port Charles, and All My Children). Both unprecedented moves in daytime, and smart moves by both networks. Many AW fans, disgruntled by the loss of their show, have vowed to boycott NBC and refuse to watch the new Passions which will begin airing Monday, July 5, 1999. Interesting how NBC is waiting a week before airing Passions. Do they really think the fans will forget about their loyalty to Another World in just seven days? CBS and ABC are banking on the fans living up to the boycott and following their favorite actors to their respective networks. Time will tell.
ABC is going even further with Linda Dano. Not only will she be part of the entire ABC Daytime soap line up, she will also be a frequent visitor on The View.
Linda's new ventures don't end with ABC. She also just helped launch a new home furnishings website called HomePoint.com. Billed as the world's largest one-stop-shop for home furnishing needs on the internet, HomePoint. com (http://www.homepoint.com) is the first fully integrated destination supersite of home decorating and furnishings on the web, providing links to AccessoryPoint.com, FurniturePoint.com, LightingPoint.com and WallArtPoint.com with more than 1000 items in each category and 18 varieties of wall art.
"All of the fresh ideas and many choices at Homepoint.com make it easy to create the room of your dreams simply and easily," said Linda. "Being able to do it comfortably from your own home, on any day, at any time, is very exciting."
Linda, who is also an expert on home decorating, released her book Living Great: Creating the Home You've Always Wanted in the Spring of 1998. Now, with the click of a mouse, she plans to add the finishing touches on her new dressing room at ABC with selections from Homepoint.com.
Excited about these new ventures, Linda is also sad to see the end of Another World. See her comments in our Emmy coverage section in the article "Stars Shine on the Daytime Emmys Creative Craft Achievement Awards."
Linda begins airing as Rae (Gretel) Cummings on One Life to Live on Monday, June 28, 1999. She will promote her new role on CNN's Showbiz Today the same day between 4:00 and 4:30 PM ET, and will chat live online at abc.com on Wednesday, June 30, 1999 at 8:00 PM ET.
Which reminds me. Why must ABC Daytime insist on changing names for their characters? Wasn't Gretel good enough? Why have Gretel Cummings return as Rae? Why did AMC's Joey Martin return as Jake? And Kelsey Jefferson. What was her name before it was Kelsey? Kate? Or was that the Grandmother? Oy. It gets very confusing. Please share your views on name-changing, Linda Dano's new multi-show role, or the demise of Another World in the Criticize the Critic folder on the Turtle Run Message Boards.
