Hi Suds Buds,
Have you noticed how much soap related print media coverage there seems to be these days? I am not talking about what you get in your dose of "Soap Opera Weekly," "Soap Opera Digest," or "Soaps In Depth." I am talking about "Passions" on not one, but two "TV Guide" collector covers, and Kelly Ripa (co-host Regis & Kelly AND Hayley, AMC) on the cover of this week's "TV Guide." In this week's "TV Guide" there is also a feature on "Port Charles" Caleb AND Michael Logan's usual weekly soaps column. The current "People Magazine" is carrying a story on Cassie and James DePavia (Blair and Max, OLTL).
Super Soap Sleuth, TRO's own Jessica Radloff, brought the soaps print media coverage blitz to my attention. Thanks, Jess! ;o) Why do you guys suppose that all of a sudden soaps are garnering such a wide variety of mainstream coverage? Could soaps finally be generating the respect of the entertainment industry they so rightly deserve?
I'd love to read your comments on this. Please post them in the "Criticize the Critic" folder on the Turtle-Run Message Boards.
Fan Factions Campaign for their Favorite Stars, Couples and Shows
It is remarkable how groups of fans immediately take to certain characters and/or couples. I have dubbed them "The Fan Factions." For example, "Passions" has its Ethan & Theresa contingent, along with Shuis, the Sheridan & Luis fans. "As the World Turns" has its LIMONS (Lily & Simon fans) and CarJackers (Carly & Jack Fans) among others. "Days of Our Lives" has many fan factions: Broe fans (Brady & Chloe), Shelle fans (Shawn & Belle), Bope fans (Bo & Hope), Phloe fans (Philip and Chloe). Y&R has its Billy and Mac fans. "All My Children" has so many fan factions I could not even begin to name them all.
In the past, Fan Factions from various shows have mounted successful campaigns to restore favorite actor's contracts, encourage actors who have left the show to pursue other career endeavors to return to the show, or reunite favorite couples who have been torn apart. Even though networks are loathe to admit that these campaigns swayed them one way or the other, actors have returned, couples have reunited, and storylines have changed direction. Right now, Missy_cat, a TRO "Port Charles" fan, is promoting a petition to save "Port Charles," just in case the rumors of its cancellation prove correct. She posts:
"Rumors about the possibility that 'Port Charles' may be canceled propelled a fan to begin a petition for ABC to (keep PC) on the air. Even though the cancellation rumors may not mean anything, it can't hurt to sign the petition and show ABC how many fans 'Port Charles' has."
Missy_cat continues by making this extremely valid point. Networks listen up:
"BTW...my opinion on the whole cancellation topic is that I find nothing wrong with PC being number 10. If networks continue to cancel soaps for being in the last spot, what is going to happen when we only have two soaps left and some bigwig decides to cancel #2? My two favorite soaps are the last two in ratings, 'Passions' and 'Port Charles.'"
To respond to Missy_cat's post and/or get the link to the petition, visit TRO's "Port Charles" Message Boards.
In addition, there are several other petitions circulating right now. "As the World Turns" has the CarJackers to reunite Carly and Jack, for example, or the forever die-hard and persistent "Loyalists," fans of "All My Children's" Michael Nader (Dimitri) who recently saw some trouble with the law due to a substance abuse problem and was asked to leave the show till he underwent rehab treatment and got his act together. With rehab completed, and the actor expressing interest in returning to the show, the "Loyalists" continue in full force to petition the network for his being re-hired.
Most recently, another uproar developed among "All My Children" fans. When Princess Gillian Andrassy (Esta Terblanche) was abruptly shot in the head and killed off the show as her heart was donated to another, less popular character, fans of the extremely popular and romantic couple, Ryan (Cameron Mathison) and Gillian were outraged.
Almost immediately the Fan Faction machine went into motion, even though the character of Gillian is still appearing on the show in a ghost-like state. Ryan and Gillian fans wanted Ryan and Gillian together, in the flesh, in each other's arms, right back here on earth. A "Save the Princess" petition was started on July 7th and as of today there are 1274 signatures. According to rspriggs2, the creator of the petition, "the consensus is that the fans want Gillian back and they don't care how."
The petition was brought to my attention by a die-hard Ryan and Gillian fan who is against what AMC has done to her favorite couple. However, the mastermind behind the entire move to alert the powers that be at ABC that the fans are not happy with the current direction the story has taken for their favorite couple is Divine. Divine built a web page at http://www.fadedtimes.com/divine devoted to "Saving the Princess." In addition to the petition, the second phase of the campaign includes sending tiara's to the network. The fans have zeroed in on the honchos in charge and hope to get them to reconsider the story direction.
According to Divine, "We just want the powers that be to know that we are truly outraged by all this, and that we will not accept Gillian dead. It just doesn't work. She is a valuable asset to the show. Esta and Cameron have such wonderful chemistry together that it gives fans a sense of hope that happy endings do come true."
Esta Terblanche (Gillian) recently renegotiated to stay with the show at least until December. How the story will play out from now until then is an unknown.
Q&A with AMC's Ryan on the AfterLife Storyline and his Comments on Michael Nader (Dimitri)
Turtle-Run had the opportunity to speak with Cameron Mathison (Ryan) on his current storyline and the "Save the Princess" campaign. He is well aware of the dissatisfaction of the fans in regard to this story. As he dashed to make a plane, he shared with us his candid comments.
LMS: How did you first hear about the "afterlife" storyline?
CM: I heard that something major, some sort of a buzz was going on involving my storyline, and I wasn't really sure what it was. I heard little hints about this and that and I tried to investigate a little bit. I tried to find out what it was, but they really wouldn't tell me what was going on.
LMS: How long before you got the scripted material was this?
CM: This was before, but I didn't know anything. It's just like anything that you hear, buzz and stuff. So I really didn't pay much attention to it. I didn't even talk to Esta much about it. It's just stuff that was floating around and I let it go and then all of the sudden Esta pulled me aside one day and she told me that she's being killed off! And I don't know, my heart sank. We kinda sat in her dressing room and cried a little bit and stuff. It was sad and at the same time it wasn't, because we didn't know what they were planning with this afterlife storyline and we were hoping it would be done like kind of the cool way (it was) done in "Ghost." (We decided to) make it good a opportunity for us as actors. (But) it was very sad. Esta and I are very close and it's been sad.
LMS: The afterlife story is a more unique kind of thing. You and Esta have both been doing an amazing job with the material.
CM: Thank you. As far as the scenes where she was actually in the hospital and all that and they wanted to take her heart, I never had the opportunity to do that kind of work as an actor. On paper this seems a little silly, and I know people are angry with it and whatever, but the only way as an actor that you can do it is literally dive in head first and completely and totally believe everything that is going on. Because a certain part of me really believes in spirits and things like that and I think in Ryan's state, it's very possible that he totally and completely believes all that because he can feel (Gillian's) spirit . It's been interesting.
LMS: Do you know what's going to happen down the line in regard to it all? Let's put it this way, rather than revealing any storylines, what would you like to see happen or what would be your fantasy storyline outcome of this?
CM: I have no idea what is going to happen. What I would like to happen? I think that I would like -- I'd love (for Ryan and Gillian) to stop popping in and popping out of the frame. I wish that they would just be discovered there with certain camera angles or something like that. I think the popping in and popping out sometimes takes away from it and almost brings an element of silliness to it, but that's just a personal opinion. And I know why they do it, and why they have to do it, Because doing it the other way would be much longer and they'd have to do the scenes twice, but with that said, I think that it would be nice if Gillian's past had something to do with a family member of Ryan's and it uncovered a reason to make him want to stay in Pine Valley. I think it would really be great if it had to do with Duke Lavery and Ryan.
LMS: We had this discussion a long time ago, like a year ago, where you said that you would love a Duke Lavery connection. Well, it might happen, because the Anna Devane character was married to Duke Lavery.
CM: And that's the whole thing...
LMS: When I saw that, I really thought of you and the conversation we had and started giggling. I said, "Gee, Cameron's right on the money with that one."
CM: It looks like it could happen, but you know the other thing is that Dimitri and Alex went to England because they got a call from from a Duke. So that was kind of interesting. They got a call regarding Ryan from a Duke and..
LMS: ...and they took off.
CM: Yeah, but then again they won't tell me anything and to tell you the complete and honest truth, I don't think they know for sure.
LMS: What they're going to do yet?
CM: No, I really don't. I don't think that they know what they're going to do and how they're going to do it.
LMS: As an aside, on the whole Dimitri thing, have you spoken at all to Michael Nader? Were you friendly or close to him?
CM: I was really friendly and close to him on the set. I wasn't really friendly or close to him off the set on a personal level but I tried to give him a call just to send him my best. I think he's a really great person and a talented man and I wish him the best, but no, I haven't had a chance to speak to him.
LMS: Anything you'd like to say to your fans for their support and the fact that they want to bring back the princess and reunite Gillian and Ryan?
CM: All I can say is that it helps, y'know? No matter what. If you really want to see Ryan and Gillian again together somehow... I don't know how they could possibly do it. I mean, she got shot in the back of her head and her heart was taken out of her body.
LMS: But y'know what? I say is that it could all be a dream!
CM: Yeah, but it's too late for that.
LMS: Remember Bobby Ewing (Patrick Duffy) on "Dallas?" Did you ever watch that show where two seasons later, he woke up and it was all a dream?
CM: Oh, you're kidding.
LMS: I mean, it's soap opera! You can do anything. If they could bring back that one boyfriend of Erica's that was cremated, they can do anything! So, you never know?! If the fan support does rally that much. . .
CM: All I can say is that it does make a difference. It always makes a difference.
