Primetime takes a cue from daytime, Casting news & Seeing Stars

Linda Marshall-SmithDear Suds Buds:

There I was driving around town early last week. Had the top down on my Mustang, and some great music on the radio. Suddenly, the music is interrupted by an announcer who begins promoting an event at Disney's California Adventure.  PrimeTime Preview Weekend! Say what? Many of the stars of ABC's fall primetime lineup are scheduled to appear. Jim Belushi. Drew Carey. John Ritter. Stars from The Practice, Alias, NYPD Blue, Life with Bonnie, Less Than Perfect, etc. Highlights from the star-studded weekend included Jim Belushi in concert with his band, Sacred Hearts; George Lopez in a live performance; and two live performances of Who's Line is it Anyway?

I think ABC and Disney are going event mad. Having these kind of events for the Daytime lineup is one thing. Daytime characters and actors come into your home every day for years. You get to know and love them like friends and family. Coming out to meet them in person is a true delight for fans. But does Disney/ABC really think that fans of primetime will travel from all over the country to meet Jim Belushi?

The other strange thing about this event was the lack of promotion it received on the West coast. The event took place last weekend (August 24 and 25, 2002.) I only heard one promo for it. That morning on the car radio. I didn't even notice any ads in the local newspapers. Was the rest of the country informed of this first ever primetime preview at Disney's California Adventure?

I know that theme parks have been hurting since September 11. I know that Disney/ABC is tie-in happy. But as big the fan of Alias or The Practice that I am, I have absolutely no desire to rush on down to Anaheim to catch a glimpse of the show's stars. Am I in the minority? Would you attend such an event -- if you were even aware of it and had time to plan a trip to LA? Let me know on the Turtle-Run message boards.

Speaking of planning trips, I am headed off on a short end-of-summer vacation. I'll see you in Top of the Week on September 9! Till then, happy Labor Day everyone.

DOOL's Peter Reckell to Compete in Celebrity Triathlon

Travis Schuldt (ex Ethan, PAS) and the LoneStar Ensemble

LA area Passions fans. Don't miss the current production of The Lone Star Ensemble, CARDENIO, at the 2100 Square Feet theatre in Los Angeles! Only a few weeks left... Call 323-650-5111 to reserve your tickets today!

Travis Schuldt and The Lone Star Ensemble, the non-profit theatre company behind last year's acclaimed production of "Venus and Adonis," is mounting a modern adaptation of an obscure manuscript now believed to be William

Shakespeare's controversial "lost" play, CARDENIO. The production is

currently underway the 2100 Square Feet theatre on San Vicente. Here's what critics have been saying:

"Crackles with ingenuity, intelligence, and wonderfully ironic wit. The show offers so many compelling visual moments and takes so many theatrical risks that the entire experience is a living, breathing argument for what often makes 99-Seat theatre more interesting than most Equity spectacles." -Paul Birchall, Back Stage West - CRITIC'S PICK

"Crackling entertainment of a most precocious stripe. The Lone Star Ensemble is a vibrant company that bears watching." -F. Kathleen Foley, Los Angeles Times.

"The Lone Star Ensemble is a new amalgam of attractive young friends who met in college and have reconnected in a common goal: to make it in The Industry and still create some damn good live theater while they do it. These folks know what they're doing." -Travis Michael Holder, Entertainment Today.

CARDENIO stars Corey Hayes, Steve Lipinsky, Megan Henning, Brian Stanton, Lisa Hagood, Travis Schuldt, Kathryn Gordon, Kevin Will, Louis Hale, Andrew Stoddard, Jay Thames, Peter Hancock, David E. Reaves, and Jennifer Slimko. Directed by James Kerwin.

CARDENIO runs Thursdays through Sundays, August 8 - September 15 at the 2100 Square Feet theatre, 5615 San Vicente Blvd. (between Fairfax and La Brea) in Los Angeles. Show times are 8:00 pm Thursday through Saturday; 7:00 Sunday (August 11 - September 8); and 3:00 Sunday (September 15 only). There will be no performances Labor Day weekend (August 29 - September 1). Tickets are $15. For reservations call 323-650-5111.

CARDENIO includes the use of strobe lights, fog effects, simulated gunfire, and partial nudity. Recommended for mature audiences.  For more information about CARDENIO, visit
