Dear Suds Buds,

Boy oh boy! Has this been a whirl wind week of Emmy stuff or what?  At Soapdom, we’ve been busy producing our content. We are still getting photos and inside the bubble items coming in, so be sure to stay tuned to Soapdom as we add to our Emmy coverage all this week.

Congratulations to all the winners!  There were some surprises, and some anticipated wins.  Did your favorites take home the Emmy this year?  But what about the booby prize?  There were certainly enough low-cut gowns to give quite a few actresses that honor.

As you know, the show was broadcast on NBC. Interestingly, NBC Daytime hardly received any nominations, and therefore didn’t take home any Emmys in the main categories (both Days of our Lives and Passions won in the Creative Craft Categories held in simultaneously ceremonies on both coasts on May 15, 2004).

The fact that Days of Our Lives gets only one nomination for acting (James Reynolds for his role as Abe), and nothing for writing or directing, stands out like a sore thumb to me.  For the past two years in Soapdom’s Annual Cybby Awards, Days wins as the best soap of all time.   Bo and Hope have won super couple of all time more than once.  We are still in the midst of voting in the Cybbys for this year, and I gotta tell you, Days is again ahead in the polls for a Cybby win.  (And remember. Voting in the 5th Annual Soapdom Cybby Awards ends May 31, 2004, so be sure to cast your votes.)

Additionally, Days of our Lives wins in the People’s Choice voting (when daytime drama is part of the list of categories for the People’s Choice Awards.)  So, it certainly looks like Days has the fans on its side, buy why not the Emmy nominating committee?

Could it be due to sheer numbers?  The Daytime Emmy awards are nominated by professionals in the daytime industry. CBS has four soaps on the air. Let’s see, that’s about 40 actors, say about another 60 to 100 in production personnel, times four!  ABC has three soaps on the air, with 30 to 40 actors each, and 60 to 100 in production personal each – times three.  NBC has only two soaps on the air, so that’s 30-40 actors, plus 60-100 production personnel each – times two.  That’s a total of a top of 280 votes for the NBC network as opposed to a top possible of 560 votes for CBS.  Do you see where I am going with this?

If I am wrong, if anyone out there can clear up the voting process to explain exactly how the members of the daytime industry itself vote, I welcome the education.  If I am right, maybe it’s time for NBC to consider producing a third soap. If not for any other reason than to get its flagship soap, Days of our Lives, the Emmy recognition it’s due.   Just a thought.

Do you think Days of our Lives gets shortchanged due to sheer numbers?  Tell me what you think on the Criticize the Critic Folder on the Soapdom message boards.

Til the top of next week,
