A few weeks ago I was sharing a pizza with my husband in this quaint little Italian restaurant in Santa Monica. From across the room I heard a group of diners laughing hysterically. It caused me to look over, and much to my delight, there was James Patrick Stuart (ex Will Cortland, AMC), plain as day, right there in front of me! He was the cause of all that laughter. Of course he was. He is hysterical! Several years ago, Michael E. Knight (Tad, AMC) introduced me to Patrick, who was appearing in a LA stage production at the time. Michael was going to see it and Patrick met up with him beforehand so that they could car pool to the theater, or some other environmentally conscious thing. Lucky me, I happened to be there when Patrick arrived. Michael and Patrick are great friends and between the two, I couldn't tell you who was funnier. They played off each other and had me in hysterics the entire time. Ever since, I have followed Patrick's career, enjoying his work on Frazier (you may remember him as the gay ski instructor in an Emmy-Award-winning hour-long episode from several years ago), and on the short-lived sitcoms, The Simple Life with Judith Light (ex Karen, OLTL) and Encore, Encore, with Nathan Lane. He stole every scene he was in on all those shows, IMHO. I asked Michael Knight to pass on to Patrick how much I was enjoying his work. I was once even bold enough to ask Michael for Patrick's phone number or e-dress so that I could tell him myself. Michael's response: "No." Michael is protective of other celebrities' private contact information, as he should be. LOL Okay, so back to the other night. Here I am immersed in a slice of 3-topping pizza with a wholewheat crust, and there's James Patrick Stuart ten feet away. I had to say hello and tell him how much I enjoy his work! Much to my surprise he remembered meeting me (that, or he is just too gracious and charming to say that he didn't! LOL) and we chatted for quite some time. Aside from auditioning and hoping to get cast in the next top-ten sitcom or hit box office smash, Patrick has just gotten married and is currently taking some college courses! It was great seeing him and catching up. Now, if ever I want to tell him how much I am enjoying his work I can! He gave me his phone number and e-dress, and promised to do an interview with us! So stay tuned and be prepared to giggle. ;o)

ABC Daytime Donates $20,000 To amFAR
ABC Daytime and ABC.com donated $20,000 to The American Foundation for AIDS Research (amfAR) in a presentation on the General Hospital stage on Wednesday, Oct. 11, 2000. The money, raised from the sale of General Hospital Nurses Ball T-shirts, was presented to amfAR representatives by Angela Shapiro, president of ABC Daytime; Wendy Riche, executive producer of General Hospital; Julie Carruthers, executive producer of Port Charles; Lynn Herring (Lucy, Port Charles), and Brian Bowman, vice president and general manager of ABC.com. Now in its seventh year, the Nurses Ball has become a General Hospital and Port Charles tradition and coincides each year with the Day of Compassion, a day devoted to raising awareness for AIDS/HIV in the media. The T-shirts, as seen worn by characters on both shows, were made available to fans exclusively on ABC.com.

ABC's One Life to Live Wins First Ever CDC Sentinel for Health Award
Congratulations to the denizens of Llanview and their powers that be for winning the first-ever Center for Disease Control Sentinel for Health Award for a Daytime Drama. In ceremonies that took place Saturday, October 14 in Los Angeles, "Viki's Breast Cancer" storyline was selected from four finalists - all of which, as it turned out, were ABC Daytime dramas. The announcement was made at Soap Summit V, an educational conference hosted by Population Communications International for writers, producers and network executives of daytime dramas. As any OLTL fan knows, in the award-winning storyline, Viki (Ericka Slezak) was stunned to receive a diagnosis of breast cancer following a routine mammogram. The strong-willed newspaper publisher faced her greatest battle ever as she was forced to come to terms with the devastating disease without the support of her estranged fianc, Ben (Mark Derwin). She found comfort and strength from her children, and underwent a modified radical mastectomy and reconstructive surgery. OLTL devoted an entire episode to Viki, as she prepared to enter the hospital. Later, Viki dealt with the devastating effects of chemotherapy, which included the loss of her hair. Viki and Ben finally reconciled and she was able to share her fears and triumphs with the man she loves. This powerful story is ongoing, as OLTL is committed to following through with Viki's difficult journey. ABC Daytime's other nominated stores were "Matt Walks" on Port Charles, which dealt with the misconceptions of disability; "Drunk Driving Revisited," on All My Children which explores the impact of drunk driving on family members over time; and "Pediatric and Adolescent AIDS Awareness" on General Hospital, which combined prevention messages with the positive effect the dedication of a community can have on raising awareness of this deadly disease. The CDC Award for Daytime Drama recognizes exemplary achievements of daytime dramas that inform, educate, and motivate viewers to make choices for healthier and safer lives. Daytime dramas provide both entertainment and incidental information about disease, injury, and disability. Through their portrayals of characters' lives, writers and producers have a unique opportunity to touch viewers' lives. The way a popular character deals with a personal health decision and its impact can influence audience members to think about their own choices. A compelling storyline that demonstrates risky behavior and consequences, or shows how to avoid risk, can benefit millions of viewers and their loved ones. The Sentinel for Health Award for Daytime Drama was developed by CDC and is supported by the CDC Foundation to encourage more health storylines and more accurate portrayals of health topics on daytime drama. Amen to that! CDC analysis of data from the 1999 Healthystyles Survey shows that nearly half of regular viewers of soap operas report that they have learned about a disease, or how to prevent it, from watching their favorite soap, and more than one-third have taken some action as a result. Congratulations again to OLTL for winning this prestigious Award and to the CDC for creating an award that encourages responsible storytelling in regard to health-related issues.
