Nominees, Presenters, and Castmembers Party for the Emmys in Los Angeles

From "Passions" new heartthrob, Ryan McPartland (Hank), to "General Hospital's" Marissa Rameriz (Gia) and Tamara Braun (Carly), "Port Charles'" Kiko Elsworth (Jamal), DOOL's Kevin Spirtas (Craig), and so many others, the daytime stars came out at night to celebrate the Daytime Emmys in Los Angeles. At a reception held on Sunset Blvd. at "fenix," a restaurant in West Hollywood's Argyle Hotel -- an art deco landmark with breathtaking views of the city -- there were no fancy ceremonies, no heartfelt speeches, no pomp and circumstance, just delicious hors d' oeuvres, tasty cold drinks, and lots of great conversation.

McKenzie Westmore (Sheridan, Passions), who is always delighted to see Turtle Run, looked absolutely ravishing in a silky, black, virtually skin-tight, strapless sheathe. Dazzling diamond earrings brought out the sparkle in her eyes. Erin Hersey (Alison, PC) also looked tres adorable, and was as bubbly and jovial as usual. I don't think the smile left her face the entire night. Tamara Clatterbuck (Barb, DOOL) was among the first to arrive, and also gave Turtle Run a big hello! The folks from B&B were late, as there was a major press conference held on the B&B set to announce the new Latino storyline. Stay tuned to B&B for some exciting times ahead. Patrika Darbo (Nancy, DOOL) was supposed to attend, but didn't make it. However, co-star, Kevin Spirtas (Craig, DOOL) was there as his usual charming and gracious self and filled us in on some of his latest endeavors. (See below.) Adrienne Frantz (Amber, B&B) received some home decorating advice from fellow Emmy Nominee, Christopher Lowell ("The Christopher Lowell Show") and for a little excitement, somehow, someone threw a glass of something into the pool!

Making a splash of our own, TRO took the opportunity to catch up with a few of the stars. Marissa Rameriz (Gia, GH) arrived with her significant other, Jack Cain, in tow. (Cain, by the way, could be a soap star himself.) Happy to be a working actor, Rameriz shared her sentiments about her current storyline. "I love being a vicious character. It is so much fun to play," she says. "(But) I think they are (now) making me be really nice and befriending Elizabeth, and pretty much everybody on the show. It's sweet for now, but I really hope that it changes back to me being a little vixen again!" Recognizing that it's good to have a vixen on any show, Rameriz confided that she has a lot of fun playing that kind of role. She also enjoys working with the rest of the younger crowd. "They call me 'the kid,'" she said with a laugh. "I love that. It makes me feel younger!" She says that although acting on a soap can be difficult, as it is work, she always tries to make the work as fun as possible. "You should always enjoy your work," she says. "And I do!" Rameriz was also excited to be heading east for the 28th Annual Daytime Emmys. "I am one of the few from 'General Hospital' who are going," she revealed. "A lot of people were not that happy that no one got nominated from GH. A lot of them felt that their work should have been recognized. But I am going to go and support the show because I am all about having fun in your job. It's not about winning an award. (The awards show) is just a big party, and I love to get dressed up and party. So I am going to be there." Born and bred in Los Angeles, Rameriz has never been to New York. "I am spending four days there and I am really excited about it," she says. Not sure what she will wear to the event, she felt she would most likely stay away from anything traditional. "I am bored with gowns. I will probably just go and be me. Like with something funky and comfortable. Look for something very different!"

With a tinge of shyness, a charming sense of humor, and drop-dead gorgeous good looks, Passions' Ryan McPartland (Hank) is a living doll. (No offense, Timmy! LOL) He just loves being the new Hank. "It was quite an adventure the first couple of weeks out," he said with a laugh. "I came in right in the middle of trying to save people from Hell! It was quite a start!" McPartland is as interested as everyone else to see how Hank is now going to impact the other lives in Harmony. "The thing that kind of worries me (as an actor) about the daytime world, is that everybody keeps you in the dark just as much as everyone else. Hopefully," he reflected, "I hope I will find a girl sometime soon, settle down and have a nice life (in Harmony)!" On the show a mere two months, McPartland felt comfortable fitting in right from the get go. "I've been on a number of sets since I've been in this town. It was like 'you're the new guy.' It's like being the new kid in school. With Passions I walked in and it was like I've known everybody for a long time," he said. "I sincerely mean that. Everyone was very kind and welcoming, and after one day, it seemed like I've known them for years. It was a great fit." Even though he knows he took over the role from someone else (Dalton James), he feels that the role of Hank Bennett was written just for him. "I've been doing most of my scenes with Galen (Gering, Luis) and McKenzie (Westmore, Sheridan), and obviously the people that you do your scenes with you get closest with, at least initially. Galen and McKenzie are great."

At this point, Rodney Van Johnson (TC) approached saying "Wait. What about Rodney Van Johnson?" McPartland blushed and laughed with a deep, sexy tone. "The one who guided you and pulled you over to the corner and told you about life, so why do you wanna dis me, man?" Van Johnson teased. "Right," responded McPartland, with a giggle. "Rodney has taken me under his wing. He's told me what it's all about!"

Van Johnson admitted that he missed working with Lena Cardwell (ex Simone). "You never want to see anyone out of work. I miss my Lena very, very much. But I love my new daughter (Chrystee Phariss) just as much. So, I am happy that someone is working, but at the same time, someone else is not working. You've grown an alliance with the first person, and I miss Lena a lot, but I am happy for my new daughter. We even found out that Chrystee's mother and my aunt went to the same college together. That is kind of nice." Plus, Van Johnson loves being on Passions. "It's a blast," he said. "It's the best job I've had in a while. It's a lot of fun!" He is also looking forward to going to the Emmys. "He is going to show me around New York," chimed in McPartland. Guess Van Johnson really has taken McPartland under his wing! LOL

Tamara Braun (new Carly, GH) is a sheer delight, and is so excited to be playing the role of Carly, even though she knows she has some pretty big shoes to fill. "I was terrified at first," she said with a laugh. "Now that my feet are wet, it is better. You go into a new environment, with people who have been there forever - old timers who are so good at what they do - but everyone has been so wonderful, it is comfortable (for me) now." Braun feels that she is blessed to be working with co-star, Maurice Benard (Sonny). "He is a sheer dream to work with," she said. "He is patient, and supportive and wonderful!" It will be interesting to see just how Sonny deals with Carly's betrayal. "I am not sure how that is going to impact their relationship," she admitted. "I would like him to be able to forgive her completely. I would love to continue to work with Maurice." Braun also let us in on a little secret. "I was more brunette when I first started on the show. Now I am much blonder. Everyone says that I look so similar to Sarah Brown (ex Carly). I do see a resemblance." Braun, who is working in daytime for the first time, would love to see the writers continue the Sonny and Carly love story. "I've seen some of the fan mail," she said. "Even though the fans are sorry that Sarah (Brown) left, they would rather see the character of Carly stay. (They say that) they love the love story. So, I don't know if the writers will continue to do (the Carly/Sonny love story), or if they can, that's up to them." Braun got the part after she was called in on a casting call by GH Casting Director, Mark Teschner. "Mark had seen me a couple of times. I always go in to see him. He is just the nicest man. The nicest casting director out there. I read for the part of a young, vivacious and feisty woman. It was a contract role. I didn't know it was for the part of Carly. I new nothing of what it was. I went in and auditioned three or four times, was (screen) tested, met with Maurice and did the scene together on a Wednesday, and I found out (I got the role) on the next Monday."

Kiko Elsworth (Jamal, PC) unequivocally has THE most sensitive, sincere, sexy sky blue eyes! We talked about his presenting at the Daytime Emmys. "I am not nervous at all," he said. "I am very, very excited about it. I haven't thought about it much because I have been working a lot lately, and a lot of things are going on in my life, but when I get on the plane and get to the hotel, that's when the excitement will really show through. I am really looking forward to it," even though he has no idea what category he will present! He does know who will join him as his date. "My mom!" he said with a big smile. Far as life in Port Charles, Elsworth feels that Jamal has been taken advantage of. "He's been made to look bad in front of Zach," said Elsworth. "Zach has slapped him in the face, and Jamal has turned his face one too many times. I'd really like Zach's karma to come around for him." In other words, Elsworth feels that Zach is due for a little payback. But will Jamal be the one to give it to him? We'll have to tune in and see. Elsworth enjoys working with Erin Hersey (Alison) and feels that their characters will continue to bond and grow closer as time goes on. "Even Amanda is on good terms with Alison now, so she will be coming back into our lives now, I think. But in a different light than we've seen her before," revealed Elsworth. He is also fond of the new 12-week story arc format of the show. "I love that," he said. "I am all about change and growth. Even if at the time it doesn't seem like it's for the better, as long as there is change occurring, that is what life is all about. That is growth right there in and of itself."

Kevin Spirtas (Craig, DOOL) told TRO all about the upcoming Cabaret with the Wesleys. "It's our third annual fan club extravaganza event. This year, we are continuing with the theme of collecting cast members who are interested in showing up and having a good time. It keeps the family morale going and it's a great way to give back to the fans!" It's a variety show where Patrika Darbo (Nancy) and Spirtas host the singing and dancing. "We will do our duets again," said Kevin. "We will have a few solos, also. And Nadjia Bjorlin (Chloe) will sing, and Kyle Lowder (Brady), Kirsten Storms (Belle) and Farah Fath (Mini), Valerie Wildman and James Reynolds, Steve Blackwood (Bart), Tamara Clatterbuck -- it shows all the fans, who don't already know, that there are different sides to us." Spirtas, who started his performing career on Broadway, says that singing and dancing is where his true love lies. "It's where my heart is," he said. Spirtas is also now working with Ron Abel (a musical composer) on his next act, which he hopes to be performing in cities all over the U.S. "And casinos, cruise ships, I am really gonna try and get something going," he said with a laugh. He is also scheduled to sing the National Anthem at the LA Dodgers home game on August 2, 2001. Plus, St. Louis, MO fans, watch for Kevin to return to his hometown and sing the National Anthem at a home Rams game! "I am really excited about that," he said. Far as the way things are going in Salem, Kevin wouldn't mind a bit of an expanded role. "I have such a great time working with Patrika Darbo and Nadjia Bjorlin. We have such a great little triangle. I would like to see them really reveal the father at this point, so that we could have some good drama. I am looking forward to whoever the father is, and that reveal. And, I would love for the story line to open up and cross over to some other characters. Whether it is with Nancy going outside the relationship, or Craig. I think its time. We'll see!"

Damian Returns to ATWT

Last Thursday, May 10, 2001, Paolo Seganti returned to ATWT as Damian Grimaldi, reprising the role he played from April 1993 to January 1996 and briefly revisited in the summer of 1997. "When we last saw Damian," said ATWT EP, Chris Goutman, "he had told Lily that he was devoting himself to life in a monastery. His unexpected arrival in town calls his recent past into question, and brings with it an element of danger." Grimaldi returns to Oakdale with a personal agenda that immediately causes friction in the household of his ex-wife, Lily Snyder. Last Top of the Week we reported that Martha Bryne (Lily/Rose) couldn't be more delighted that Seganti has returned. "Im so excited to be working with him again," she told TRO.

Since Seganti's departure from daytime drama, he has kept quite busy being featured in the films "Tea with Mussolini," "L.A. Confidential," "Everyone Says I Love You," and "Still Breathing." His television appearances include episodes of "Babylon 5," "Nash Bridges," and "The Nanny." Most recently, he has been starring as the title character in Paramount's syndicated series, "Largo Winch" along with Sydney Penny (ex Julia, AMC). An international model, Seganti was featured in Chanel print ads and television commercials for their men's cologne, Egoiste. For his previous work as Damian Gramaldi, he garnered two Soap Opera Digest nominations. TRO welcomes Damian back to Oakdale. What havoc will he cause? We will all have to tune in to find out!
