GH Fan Weekend, Joan Collins to GL, DOOL's celeb softbal, & more

Linda Marshall-SmithDear Suds Buds,

Passions fans gathered at the Globe Theatre at Universal Studios Hollywood last Saturday for the 3rd Annual Passions Fan Event. How time flies. It was only yesterday that we covered the First Annual Passions fan event, held at the Sportsman's Lodge in Studio City, CA. Here's to many more fun events for Passions fans! Hope all that attended had a blast!

Speaking of the Sportsmen's Lodge and fan events, General Hospital and Port Charles fans are gearing up to attend the GH Fan Weekend 2002, held at Sportsmen's Lodge, which is a very fitting venue to hold a soap opera event. The hotel/conference center is what they used to call a "wedding factory." Tons of event rooms filled with gushing brides, grooms who have had a tad too much to drink, and friends and relatives gallore. Luckily, errant gunman don't usually interrupt the wedding receptions, shooting the bride's father and causing his ultimate death like what recently happened to Greenlee and Leo on All My Children. But there is definitely that atmosphere of the grand soap opera wedding in this room, and in that room, and over across the parking lot in that other room! If you ever have the opportunity to attend a soap event at Sportsmen's Lodge, I highly recommend it. It's a lot of fun and you'll come away with gaining lots of good luck as seeing a bride is a good omen! Imagine how good fortune will shine upon you after seeing 4 or 5 brides within minutes!

It was kind of a quiet week in soaps news -- the biggest coup made by Guiding Light who signed former Dynasty star, Joan Collins, in the role of Alexandra Spaulding.  Read all about it...

Guiding Light Lands Joan Collins as "Alexandra Spaulding"

Internationally renowned actress, Joan Collins, makes her daytime television debut when she joins the cast of the CBS daytime drama Guiding Light in the role of Alexandra Spaulding. Alexandra is a wealthy and powerful woman, a master manipulator who is engaged in an eternal battle with her brother Alan (Ron Raines) for control of Spaulding Enterprises.

"We are thrilled to have an actress of Joan's caliber play the role of Alexandra Spaulding," said GL executive producer, Paul Rauch upon making the official announcement last Wednesday, July 17, 2002. "Alexandra is a vibrant and formidable woman and Joan's talents are perfect for this character."

Mary Alice Dwyer-Dobbin, Executive-in-Charge of Production for Procter & Gamble Productions, producers of Guiding Light, concurred.  "When we decided to bring back the character of Alexandra Spaulding, Joan Collins was the first person on our wish list to play the sexy, no-nonsense businesswoman. We couldn't be happier to have an actress of her stature join the cast of Guiding Light, a respected show which has led the wy in daytime drama for more than 50 years on television.

No stranger to serialized television, Collins achieved world-wide fame for her portrayal of Alexis Carrington Colby on the prime-time hour-long show, Dynasty. Along with her versitlity as an actress, Collins is the sister of novelist, Jackie Collins, is also a best-selling author and an accomplished producer.

Collins begins airing as Alexandra in late September, 2002.

Loving's/The City's T.W. KingLandsGeneralHospital

Ted King (formerly known as T.W. King) joins the cast of GeneralHospital this week in the role of Alcazar. Alcazar first appears in town with a vendetta against crime lord, Sonny Corinthos (Maurice Benard). However, it soon becomes evident that his agenda runs far deeper than a grudge against Sonny, and will have consequences that ripple throughout the entire town.

King is best known to fans of ABC soaps for his portrayal of Danny Roberts on Loving and subsequently, The City. King's other credits include being a series regular on Charmed, as well as guest-starring roles on numerous popular primetime series such as Fraiser, Sex and the City, Law and Order: SBU, and Jag.

King begins airing as Alcazar on Monday, July 22, 2002.
