AMC's Dimitri Recast, Nader Update, Anna's backstory & More

Hi Suds Buds:

In last week's Top of the Week, I mentioned that as of the writing of that column (which was Thursday, March 1, 2001), TRO had as yet only received one letter of support from the fans of AMC's Michael Nader (Dimitri) after his unfortunate run in with the law in NYC for allegedly selling a small amount of cocaine to an undercover cop. I am happy to report that as of this writing (Thursday, March 8, 2001) we have been contacted by quite a number of Nader fans. Gods2gods sent me email containing links to updates on the story from the NY Post's Starr report. JoNik wrote: "If Michael Nader has a problem, I hope he'll get help, and not fired. I think people who have an addiction need help, not punishment. " AMC Pod sent the link to a brand new website that has been created to show support for Nader during this time. It contains contact information for the network, producers, the soap magazines and requests that all Nader fans write in snail mail to show their support. Visit the site at http://www.angelfire.com/celeb2/nader

Donata writes:

"I too was one of the fans that did all I could to get Michael back on the AMC and I was so heartbroken and saddened by the news of Michael Nader's arrest. I have been a HUGE Fan of his since the day he stepped foot on the AMC set. First and foremost on my mind and I believe most of his fans, is that he seeks help for his problem, and undergo treatment for this devastating disease! Not a one of us is perfect, and those that condemn him for what he is alleged to have done before all the facts are known, are the type of people that chase Ambulances! They seem to really enjoy devastation of one kind or the other to a fellow human being! Michael created the roll of Dimi, and for ABC to think they can recast ANY ONE else as DIMITRI is literally ridiculous! If they extend their hand in helping him, then they should also keep the door open to him once he completes the program and (is) on his way to a new and better life. I would accept a re-cast for Dimi, if need be for the time he is obtaining help, but I would expect him to be able to return to AMC once this is completed. If ABC does not allow the door to remain open for his return, being a fan of AMC since its very first appearance on television, I will in fact shut off that program and walk away from it as if it never existed! Get well Michael and come back to us!"

I spoke with Arthur Toretzky, Nader's agent and friend for over 15 years, and asked him to relay to Michael that his fans are in his corner. Toretzky assured me emphatically that Nader did "NOT SELL ANYTHING! "Quote me in caps, on that," he said. "That is a guarantee." Toretzky feels the entire situation is a shame and has been exacerbated due to the fact that Nader is a television star. "Twenty-four people were busted and got to go home to their families with a slap on the wrist," he said. "But because Michael is a celebrity, it made the news." Nader has checked into a substance abuse rehabilitation center and is now into the treatment one week. "I haven't spoken to him in a few days," revealed Toretzky, "as the first week they want to keep them very focused." Toretzky said that Nader's attitude was great. He would not share on which coast Nader was receiving treatment. "There are only so many of those kinds of centers, if I tell you which coast, you'd figure it out," he said. We both agreed it's best to not reveal those particulars. Toretzky did not know for sure, but estimates that the program will last for 30 days. In the meantime, AMC has had to recast the role of Dimitri. "In the absence of Michael Nader," said the spokesperson for the show, "the role of Dimitri Marick will be played by Anthony Addabbo. Addabbo's credits include Guiding Light, The Bold & the Beautiful, Generations, The Nanny, Dallas and Cheers. His first airdate is April 6, 2001." Toretzky agrees with the network's decision to recast. "They had to do it," he said. "The story is so heavy right now. Addabbo will probably be in the role for a couple of months." In the meantime, Toretzky is happy about one thing. "I am glad this all happened now rather than six months from now because now, Michael can work on getting it fixed." Toretzky then put to rest the rumors that Nader was HIV positive. "He is NOT HIV positive. He has slimmed down due to the macrobiotic diet he has been following." Toretzky then noted that the network has been extremely supportive. In the statement released by AMC on Thursday, March 8, 2001, aside from naming Addabbo as the recast, it also said: "No further decisions have been made regarding Michael Nader's future on the show."

Meet AMC's Anna Devane and Alex Marick (Finola Hughes)

General Hospital fans will remember the mystery and intrigue surrounding the character of Anna Devane, but the character is new to All My Children. Here is a refresher course for GH fans, and an opportunity for AMC fans to get to know this new addition to the show.

According to the official ABC low down, Anna Devane Lavery Scorpio was a WSB agent (World Security Bureau) who was also a "double" agent working with the DVX, a cold war spy group, similar to the KGB. Robert Scorpio was Anna's WSB partner as well as her husband. Anna's DVX partner, Cesar Faison, forced her into continuing missions against the WSB by threatening to kill her husband. When Robert discovered she was a double agent, he demanded a divorce in exchange for keeping her secret from the WSB. In 1985, the mystery surrounding the child named Robin revealed that Anna and Robert were her parents. Also in 1985, Anna became co-police commissioner along with Burt Ramsey when Robert Scorpio left town. Ramsey was later revealed to be "Mr. Big," the head of the Port Charles mob that was later arrested by Robert Scorpio. In 1986, Anna met Duke Lavery, a nightclub owner deeply involved with the mob. On May 1, 1987, Anna married Duke Lavery for the first time. She resigned her position as police chief when it was revealed during the ceremony that Duke covered up the death of Angus McKay, a mob chief. Anna then divorced Duke. In mid 1987, Anna opened a PI agency and joined her ex-husband, Robert in preventing the assassination of WSB agents by the DVX. She re-wed Duke Lavery in October, 1987. In 1988, Anna was kidnapped by Grant Putnam. Both Robert and Duke worked independently to find Anna. In 1989, Anna was the prime suspect in the shooting of mob daughter Olivia Jerome. She was eventually cleared of all charges. Then, Anna witnessed the "death" of who she assumed was Duke as his face was altered when he was called to testify against mobsters in New York City. Federal marshals arranged the fake death because Duke felt that Anna and Robin would never be safe from his past attachments to the mob. Then, in 1990 Anna again witnessed the death of Duke (aka Jonathan Paget). Duke/Jonathan died in Anna's arms after being shot during a struggle with Julian Jerome. Anna's life was again stirred in late 1990 when Cesar Faison believed that the alien crystal that Anna's daughter Robin possessed would bring him world power. Faison's plot to obtain the crystal was eventually foiled and he was forced to leave Port Charles, but not before falling in love with Anna. In 1992, Faison kidnapped Anna because he felt they were meant to be together. Robert then left Port Charles in search of Anna. Robert caught up with Faison and Anna on a boat, which blew up with all three aboard. All were believed dead. Faison returned to Port Charles last year, and on Friday, March 2, 2001, on All My Children, Dimitri and Edmund flew to Canada to track Alex down via a traced telephone call. They were astonished to find not only Alex in a secluded cabin, but her twin sister Anna Devane Lavery Scorpio!

Speaking of Alex, here is the official ABC low down on her character, just in case GH fans want to know! :o)

Dr. Alexandra (Alex) Devane Marick had a medical practice in London. Introduced to Dimitri Marick, she agreed to treat his brain disease. In remission, Alex and Dimitri fell in love and got married. Then, Dimitri's disease returned. They returned to Pine Valley where Alex had to pretend that Dimitri was dead in order to keep treating him. Dimitri's brother, Edmund, discovered the truth. At the point that Dimitri's strength improved enough, he mysteriously disappeared, leading Alex and Edmund to accept, although reluctantly, that he had walked into the ocean to end it all, rather than live his life at less than full capacity. Edmund and Alex slowly overcame their bitterness toward each other and Edmund helped Alex find the pieces of her past. They traveled to Europe together to investigate the Bryn Wydd Sanitorium where Alex was once "treated" (a front for "the organization," headed by her mother, Charlotte, where Alex was brainwashed to take over the life of Anna Devane, the twin sister she never knew she had.) Later, Alex was re-brainwashed to forget her Bryn Wydd adventures and returned to a life in medicine. Alex and Edmund made love for the first time in Charlotte's Bristol Cottage. It was Alex's childhood home. The love between Alex and Edmund flourished as we learned that Charlotte had kidnapped Dimitri. Dimitri was finally able to escape and came to Pine Valley to be with his wife, only to find that Edmund and Alex were in love. With Alex still unaware that Dimitri was alive, Dimitri and Edmund teamed up to uncover the remaining details of Alex's past and Charlotte's involvement, during which time Alex got Charlotte to admit the truth about the past. Then, Dimitri who believed he was dying, forced David Haywood (who was treating Dimitri with an experimental drug) to tell Edmund that he died. Edmund then proposed and Alex accepted. Later, with the help of Dixie Martin, Alex came upon Dimitri alive at the Wildwind Hunting Lodge and they made love for the first time in a year. Edmund found them and realized that his life was shattered as Alex chose to stay true to her vows to Dimitri. Edmund had to back off. Then, at Ryan Lavery's yacht party for IncredibleDreams.com, his internet business, Alex mysteriously disappeared from Pine Valley for several months and on Friday, March 2, 2001, Dimitri and Edmund flew to Canada to track Alex down and found not only Alex, but her twin sister Anna Devane Lavery Scorpio.

Now, here is the thing. Could all this mention of the name "Lavery" from Anna's past have anything to do with Ryan Lavery of Pine Valley? Will Anna's impact effect more than just the Marick brothers and her sister Alex? Will Edmund be somehow mysteriously attracted to Alex's twin sister? Only time will tell!

More AMC News

We are saddened to report that Louis Edmund (Langley Wallingford) passed away on Saturday, March 2, 2001 in Stony Brooke Hospital from respiratory failure. "We are deeply distressed at the passing of Louis Edmunds," said AMC executive producer Jean Burke. "He was one of our beloved core characters who came in for a short term role but was so magical, he stayed for years."

Congratuations to the writers of AMC for winning the Writers Guild Award for best daytime serial. The 53rd Annual Writers Guild Awards were presented simultaneously at the Beverly Hilton in Los Angeles, and at the Plaza Hotel in New York on Sunday, March 2, 2001.

The character of Becca is being phased out of Pine Valley, and Tuesday, April 10, 2001 will be the last airdate for Abigail Spencer. "It has been a real pleasure working with the beautiful and talented Abigail Spencer," said AMC executive producer, Jean Dadario Burke. "The character of Becca is being phased out due to story demands. We wish (Abigail) all the best in any future endeavors."

Meet Days "Barb," Tamara Clatterbuck

No stranger to daytime television, Tamara Clatterbuck (Barb) recently appeared on General Hospital as Tammy, the hooker-turned diner owner. Prior to her role on GH, Clatterbuck starred as Alice Johnson on the Young & the Restless from 1997-99.

Born in Seattle, her family moved to Akron, Ohio when Clatterbuck was a baby. Her mother, Elsa, is Norwegian and Clatterbuck spent her childhood summers in Norway, attending school and learning to speak fluent Norwegian and Swedish. She attended Bowling Green State University in Ohio where she majored in business administration and marketing with a minor in ballet. In college, Clatterbuck landed a small role in the play Our Town and was hooked on acting. After graduating, she appeared in the musicals A Chorus Line and Pippin at the Carousel Dinner Theater in Akron before deciding to give New York City a try. After a few months of intensive theater study in NY, Clatterbuck hopped a flight to LA to try her luck during pilot season. The gamble paid off when she landed a role in the film The Borrowers, starring Rae Dawn Chong.

Along with her daytime experience, Clatterbuck portrayed Deena Famhans, a crack-addict hooker from Harlem, for several episodes of NYPD Blue. She recently wrapped a lead guest-starring role on the CBS hit series CSI, and appeared in the X-Files as Larina, the re-hab center manager who was killed by the Metal Man. She portrayed Timothy Hutton's wife in the feature film City of Industry, and was featured in the film Sour Grapes, directed by Larry David. Last year, Clatterbuck's career took a nice turn as she starred in the family film Our Lips are Sealed along with Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen. Our Lips are Sealed was a rare opportunity for the actress, considering the junkies and "white trash-"type roles she usually portrays. Clatterbuck recently wrapped the independent film What Matters Most, co-starring Chad Allen.

In 1991, Clatterbuck received the Dramalogue Award in the category of Best Lead Actress for her work in the play How the Other Half Loves. In her spare time, Clatterbuck enjoys snow skiing, ballet dancing and watching foreign films. She recently became engaged to a regional sales manager for a computer accessories manufacturer. She remains close to her mom, who now lives in Cincinnati, Ohio, and her two sisters. Clatterbuck has blond hair and blue eyes. "Barb," Clatterbuck's new character on Days, is a sexy woman with the potential to destroy many lives in Salem. Stay tuned!

Past Blast

Days of our Lives: Jen Lilley and Meredith Scott Lynn team up to rap

Jen Lilley (Theresa) and Meredith Scott Lynn (Ann) of Days of our Lives, also known as the dynamic-duo on the show, came up with the ultimate unique Holiday gift for their cast members. A video rap depicting the show and the every day goings on in the town of Salem.

How clever! Guaranteed you will watch this over and over and burst at the seams with laughter each time, as you see the antics of your favorite Salemites. Even if you don't watch the show you will enjoy this and be amazed at what you are missing in your life for an hour each day.
