Hi Suds Buds:
This winter in LA has been freezing. Well, comparatively speaking, that is. LA is supposed to offer temps in the 60's or low 70's in the winter, with some downfalls of rain (when it rains in LA it really RAINS), and the occasional Santa Anna winds, which do tend to warm things up. Contrary to the norm, however, this winter has been very chilly. Down in the 20's and 30's in some places at night. We've had to put the heat on in our house, just to get the chill out. Then all of a sudden, Thursday and Friday of last week were almost unbearably hot and humid. All of a sudden we were in the middle of a heat wave. That dreary, oppressive kind of heat. The kind that makes you yearn for the nearest swimming pool, cool shower, or the beach! The activity level around TRO's offices was little to none as a result as the heat brought with it a fair amount of lethargy. Even the cats were pooped and lying around trying to catch their catnaps in any cool place they could find.
I share this with all of you as the unusual winter cold in LA and then the abrupt switch to hot, heavy, humid days is reminiscent of the way I sometimes feel about my favorite soaps. Ether I can't wait to tune in to see what's going to happen next, or just as abruptly, I will cool off to the storytelling and flick the channel, looking to check out another show. I am willing to wager, and I am talking considerable dollars here, that there have been times when you have totally chilled to your favorite show or couple as well. It could be that the writing was slightly askew or the characters were forced to do things out of character that not only ticked you off, but made it difficult for you to continue to tune in and watch. Yet, other times, it seems as if your favorite show flies flawlessly by, every story hitting a peak, every character hitting the mark, with couples and their relationships building to passion and characters who you never thought you could ever like, or enjoy, are suddenly becoming your favorites!
Soaps are continuing stories. They never end. Ever! (Unless they get cancelled.) Those who write them will have good, creative days, and they will have not so creative days. Those who perform them will be great most of the time and not so great once in a while. What's amazing today may only be mediocre tomorrow. But one thing is for sure. Soaps do have a way of roping us in. Of making us continue to watch day after day, or even if we have tuned into something else, we always return just to see what's going to happen next in that continuing saga. A popular soap actor has been known to say: "Just once, I wish I was in a story that ends!" Don't know about you, but I love that soaps continue. I can tuned out for days, weeks, even months at a time, and tune back in and be suddenly, abruptly, drawn right smack dab back into the story. Regardless of those good and bad days, soaps work.
