Hi Suds Buds:
Thanks to the internet grapevine via Allie Jenkins, Kale Brown's (Sam, OLTL) fan club president, ABC soaps news hound, MrsDrBean, and Kiwi's post on the Turtle-Run OLTL message boards, I was alerted last week to the fact that Brown's contract with One Life to Live was not being renewed when it expires this March. I suppose it was expected, as Brown's storyline had just about withered off the face of the show. I don't understand why. The show has just brought in the character of Jennifer Rappaport, Sam and Lindsay's wayward daughter. Why faze out the dad after bringing in the child? Doesn't really make sense to me, but then, what do I know? I know this: I have always enjoyed Kale Brown's performances and work as an actor, and will miss his presence in Llanview. When contacted for comment he said simply: "The thing for me to do is say 'thanks for three great years' to ABC and move on. Any day I get paid to do what I love to do is a blessed day. Obviously, I've been very blessed by this job and the fans. Now, (it's) time to do whatever's next. Thanks so much for your kind words and support."
On a personal note, Brown, who is a guitarist, and tinkers in repairing vintage guitars himself, was extremely helpful to me in securing the perfect contact for a vintage guitar repair for a very expensive guitar that I inherited from my father. It is called a D'Angelico and I liken it to the Stradivarius of guitars. It was hand-made in 1939 and is in need of some tender, loving care, so that I may continue to play it as it was meant to be played, thus carrying on in the tradition of my dad. Brown took the time from his busy schedule to recommend several ways to go, thereby connecting me to a wonderful contact in New York. Thanks to Brown, the outlook for restoring this vintage instrument that means so much to me is very bright. I am forever indebted! You can rest assured that TRO will keep in touch with Brown, and advise you of his plans as they develop! I will miss Sam Rappaport in Llanview, and wish Brown all the best in his pursuit of future endeavors. Visit Brown online at his official fan club page. You can find it via TRO's Links.
ATWT/GH Star ShuffleThe politics behind this one have me at a loss. Last Tuesday we received word that Televest, the company that oversees production of As the World Turns and Guiding Light for Procter & Gamble Productions (PGP) has found it no longer necessary to proceed with legal action against ABC with regards to the hiring of Jensen Buchanan on General Hospital. That's great news! "Once ABC realized how the actress and her agent had misrepresented the terms of her exclusive contract at As the World Turns," explained a spokesperson for PGP, "the network immediately took action to remove her from General Hospital." GH did, in fact, replace Buchanan with another actress in the role of Melissa. Here's the thing. On the very same day, I also received word from ABC that Jensen Buchanan will be returning to the role of Melissa Bedford on General Hospital beginning February 28, 2001! Will wonders never cease? LOL We all know that Vicky's Ghost (played by Buchanan) made her final appearance to Jake and Molly last Tuesday as the couple took charge of the twins, so now, I suppose PGP doesn't mind that Buchanan goes back to the set of GH! Or will they? Time will tell. Very intriguing, indeed!
GH/OLTL Executive ShuffleIntrigue also occurred behind the scenes last week when ABC announced that Meghan McTavish, currently headwriting One Life to Live and formerly headwriter of All My Children and Guiding Light, was named head writer on General Hospital. Lorraine Broderick, currently headwriter of Port Charles and formerly co-head writer of All My Children, As the World Turns, Days of Our Lives, and part of the headwriting team of Another World, and Chris Whitesell currently writing for Days of Our Lives and formerly headwriter of Sunset Beach, co-head writer for General Hospital, and on the writing teams of Another World, One Life to Live and Guiding Light, were named new head writers on One Life to Live. Fans of GH's Michele Val Jean and Elizabeth Korte fear not, as they will remain in their current positions as General Hospital head writer and writer on the headwriting team, respectively. The changes are effective beginning March 5, 2001.
Isn't it interesting how these head writers jump around from show to show? In my humble opinion, it might behoove the networks to hire some totally new blood with fresh ideas. There are only so many known stories or themes. What makes them different, is the individual spin each writer puts on them. Shuffling the same people over and over again is like eating a stale piece of bread with different kinds of jam. It may taste a little new at first, but in the long run, it's still the same ole piece of dry bread. Those are my thoughts. What are yours? Post about the daytime writing shuffle on the Turtle-Run Message Boards in the Criticize the Critic folder.
ATWT's Parisse and Creech Get PrimeTime PilotsThe rumors began circulating the internet about two weeks ago, and have now been confirmed by As the World Turns. Annie Parisse (Julia) has been cast as a young woman from the wrong side of the tracks in the CBS pilot, Big Apple. Cassandra Creech (Denise) will be leaving ATWT later this month. She asked to be released from her contract to pursue other work, including a pilot for ABC called Metropolis. "I've had one of the most positive working experiences in my life portraying Denise Maynard," said Creech. "I've worked with terrific actors, directors, and writers, and had a chance to really develop and shape one of the most interesting characters on daytime. I feel very blessed to have had that opportunity, but it was time to move on. I've had some other very exciting opportunities, and the company graciously agreed to my request to be released from my contract, so that I can pursue them." Creech recently had a featured role in the HBO movie, Disappearing Acts, with Wesley Snipes. Her last tape date was the week of February 19, 2001. Her last airdate is unknown at this time. The role of Denise will not be recast. We at Turtle-Run wish both Parisse and Creech all the best as they pursue future endeavors. Leaving a steady job like a soap opera for the uncharted waters of a primetime television pilot that may or may not get picked up as a series, takes a lot of courage. Break a leg to both actors!
