Are you all enjoying BBQ, watermelon and the last few days of summer vacation? I hope that everyone had a blast of a summer, got to meet and greet some of your favorite soap stars, and if not, fear not. There are tons of soap opera events planned this fall. For the low down, scroll down to our Top of the Week "Seeing Stars" section for the latest on where you can get to meet your favorite stars.
Like last week, we have so much breaking news and fun stuff to share, and again, I am going to get right to it!
Beginning with a very secretive-type press release that came across my desk last week. Which in itself gives me a giggle because a press release is, by its inherent nature, meant to publicize not "keep quiet." But I digress. According to the very vague and nondescript information in this press release, it seems that a local southern California-based production company and sound stage facility has just signed a million-dollar deal to house the production of 39 episodes of a new soap opera for a major network. The show will be broadcast on this major network, along with cable outlets throughout the US and international markets. This is the first video production for this particular company's stage facilities.
So, here I am reading this juicy tidbit about a brand new soap, only to be let down by not finding out what show or what network. The Private Investigator in me (Did you know that I once dated an FBI agent who thought I was so good at being an investigative type, wanted me to apply to the FBI! LOL. This would be a website of a whole other color if I took him up on his offer. LOL Opps, digressing again.) immediately got on the case and called the press contact, only to be disappointed again. "We are not at liberty to discuss anything further about this new show," he said. "It does have a green light. They are already building sets. But the network is not ready to announce anything further."
Drat, drat and triple drat. What do you guys think it could be? We've all heard about NBC Daytime's spin off high school show. Could that be it? Do you have any other ideas? If so, I'd love to read them in the Criticize the Critic folder on the Turtle Run message boards. In the meantime, I will stay on the case and bring you all the breaking developments about this secretive new major network soaps venture.

Passions Nominated For Shine Award
On August 29, 2001 it was announced that "Passions" has been selected as a nominee for the 17th Annual Shine Awards in the category of "Daytime Drama." Presented by The Media Project, the SHINE Awards are presented each year to honor television programs that present the complicated issues surrounding sexuality with frankness and sensitivity.
"Passions'" nomination is for scenes from shows that aired April through June of 2001, where Theresa Lopez-Fitzgerald (Lindsay Korman) and her fiancé Ethan Winthrop (Travis Schuldt) begin to make love and then stopped when they realize that they do not have protection. Ethan and Theresa talk about the importance of using protection and then Theresa goes to talk to her future sister-in-law, Sheridan Crane (McKenzie Westmore), about obtaining birth control. "Let's Talk About Sex" is the title of the nominated clip package.
This year's SHINE Awards will be presented at a gala event on Wednesday, October 24 from 7:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. at the Skirball Cultural Center in Los Angeles, CA. For more information on the SHINE Awards as well as The Media Project's other endeavors, visit www.TheMediaProject.com.
Passions Fans! Visit Warlock Island
The kids of Harmony have been plagued with a number of near misses on Warlock Island. And guess what? Beginning September 5, you get to join them on the infamous plot of land! NBC Daytime (in partnership with SoapCity) gives you the opportunity to learn more about the legends and history of "Warlock Island," an island off the coast of "Passions'" fictitious New England town of Harmony, through an online interactive tourist brochure of the island.
Through the use of a specially designed icon that reads "Passions" bonus: Log on to nbc.com/passions," you will be notified on-air that a special feature has become available online. The "bonuses" are designed to provide you with information that will not be revealed during the broadcast.
As of September 5, if you log onto nbc.com/passions you will be able to get the inside scoop on "Warlock Island" from none other than Tabitha Lenox, "Passions" resident 300 year-old witch. In recent weeks on-air, the teens of Harmony as well as troublemaker Tabitha and her sidekick Timmy, have been marooned on "Warlock Island" thanks to a plotting and devious Kay Bennett. Charity, Kay's cousin who possesses supernatural powers that she is not yet aware of, has been experiencing some very frightening premonitions on the island of fire and death. While the tourist brochure touts the islands rugged and beautiful landscape, Tabitha's hand written notes reveal that the island's beauty masks its danger and the imminent destruction that is in store for all who set foot on its shores.
The online brochure will feature two maps of the island, one of the island itself and the other a detailed view of the elaborate cave system below the surface. Tabitha's notes on each map will give you hints about future story and exact dates to tune and in and watch the predicted disasters unfold. The brochure will also reveal more about the legends of "Warlock Island" and the fates of our present day characters. Additionally, you will learn more about the personal history of one of our characters and their own ties to "Warlock Island's" bloody past, which will NOT be revealed on-air!
The Warlock Island bonus will be available to visitors of NBC.com for several weeks and will be updated with new information and photography as the key story points are revealed on the air on "Passions".
As you know, NBC first launched the programming bonuses in June 2000 beginning with "Theresa's Virtual Diary" which exists today as an ongoing feature on the official "Passions" website (www.nbc.com/passions). Other previous features included video clips of special scenes that were never seen on air, "Hecuba's Mirror," an interactive feature which allowed site visitors to submit questions and have their future predicted and a "Days of our Lives" bonus which allowed viewers to log on and read a letter written by Jennifer about her unrequited feelings for Colin.
Fans of AMC's Ryan & Gillian!
We recently ran a wonderful interview with Cameron Mathison (Ryan) regarding the afterlife storyline, and how much he enjoys working with Esta Terblanche (Gillian), and what great friends they've become over the course of their working together. Fans have come together to mount a petition to reunite the couple, which will take quite some doing as Gillian is dead and her heart was donated to another character! If you are a fan of this couple, would like to see them back together, and want to make your feelings known to TPTB, sign the petition at www.fadedtimes.com.
Dano Back to Cable
Linda Dano (Rae, OLTL) is coming back to cable when she serves as master of ceremonies at the Women in Cable and Telecommunications LEA Awards.
WICT empowers and educates women in cable and telecommunications to achieve their professional goals by providing opportunities for leadership, networking and advocacy. The LEA Awards is an annual event presented by WICT's Southern California Chapter, recognizing four leaders for their contributions to the industry in the areas of Leadership, Education and Advocacy. Awards are presented to outstanding women (or men) in four categories, including Women to Watch, Advocate Leader, Woman of the Year, and Lifetime Achiever.
Emmy Award winning Linda Dano, actor, talk show host, designer and author will host the event this year. As one of television's best known and beloved stars, Dano has become a role model to women across the country. For 17 years she starred on NBC's "Another World" as the flamboyant Felicia Grant. While appearing full time on "Another World," she helped launch and hosted the groundbreaking daytime talk show, "Attitudes" on the Lifetime network. Making TV history again, in 1999 she rejoined ABC-TV to recreate a character she played 20 years ago and is now crossing the character over into all four of ABC Daytime's soaps. Also a successful fashion designer, Dano has been part of the QVC Network for more than 8 years. She is the author of two best-selling books on fashion and style, and is a monthly contributor to "New Choices" and "Soap Opera Digest" magazines.
The Awards ceremony takes place Friday, September 21, 2001 at Paramount Studios in Hollywood, CA. As we received the information on this event from our friends at SoapNet, it would seem to me that SoapNet will be airing the awards show. Alas and alack, the press information we received does not say that! But fear not, we are following up with them and will report back to you next week whether to set your VCRs for this one and when, or not! Speaking of SoapNet...
