DOOL's 35th Anniversary, LA traffic, Fan polls and more

As I write this Top of the Week, I am getting ready to head off to Orlando, Florida for Super Soap Weekend and FanFest. Although this is the 5th Annual SuperSoap, it is my first time, making yours truly a SuperSoap virgin. LOL You can rest assured that I will be wide-eyed and eager to see and do as much as possible and will have a full report of the weekend's events and festivities in Top of the Week next week. Stay tuned. For those of you who are going and would like to share your experiences with others here at TRO, please post all about it on the Turtle Run Message Boards. I can't wait to read your accounts!

Days of Our Lives 35th Anniversary Party

Days of our Lives, the cornerstone of the NBC daytime line-up and one of the most popular daytime dramas in the world, celebrated its 35th Anniversary yesterday, November 8, 2000, with a party on Stage 2 at NBC.

Turtle Run was invited to attend and drove to beautiful downtown Burbank from Santa Monica in bumper-to-bumper traffic. What made the stop-and-go drive tolerable, even fun, was hearing Peter Reckell (Bo) on the radio (STAR 98) promoting FanFest, his new CD (titled appropriately enough, Peter Reckell), the 35th Anniversary of Days, and Kelly Moneymaker's (Peter's wife) upcoming appearance at The Gig in West LA. (See Seeing Stars for Info). The radio station was taking calls for Peter, and who should call in? None other than Melissa Reeves (Jennifer), likewise on her way to the 35th Anniversary Party. Likewise stuck in freeway traffic! Ya gotta love LA. LOL

On a soundstage decked for a party, Deidre Hall had the distinct honor of introducing Executive Producer Ken Corday, who praised the tireless efforts of his cast and crew for 35 glorious years. Days of our Lives is by far the happiest set in television, stated Corday, I call it the Disneyland of Daytime. We are a family.

Scott Sassa, President of NBC West Coast, presented Ken with a Mayoral Proclamation declaring November 8, 2000 Days of our Lives Day in Los Angeles. Len Grossi, President of Columbia Tri-Star Television, was on hand to congratulate Days of our Lives, praising the show for its tremendous international growth in the last few years. Even the entertainment industry's trade bible, The Hollywood Reporter, dedicated its November 8, 2000 issue to Days of Our Lives. As did the November 14, 2000 Soap Opera Weekly and Soap Opera Digest

Days of our Lives, which premiered on November 8, 1965 as a half-hour drama, expanded to an hour in April of 1975. Although Days of Our Lives was created by the late Ted Corday, Irna Philips and Allan Chase, the soap was essentially Ted Cordays project and it is under the Corday Productions Inc. banner that it has prospered. With the death of Ted Corday in 1966, his widow Betty took over the Executive Producer role and evolved Days into the innovative, multi-generational soap opera that it remains today. Ken Corday, son of the late Ted and Betty Corday, became Executive Producer in 1986 and currently helms the daytime drama along with Head Writer and Executive Producer Tom Langan.

The last year has been one of the most exciting and rewarding in all the history of Days of our Lives, proclaimed Ken Corday. In the spring of 2000, Days of Our Lives was honored with both the Directors Guild Award and the Writers Guild Award. In February of 2000, Days was named Favorite Soap Opera for the second consecutive year at the broadcast of the TV Guide Awards, the largest poll in television history.

One of the great highlights of the past year, stated Ken Corday, was the Whos the Daddy? internet-promotion, which was the brain-child of our innovative head writer, Tom Langan. For the first time ever, fans were asked to vote online to decide the outcome of a pivotal storyline, the paternity of Hopes baby. During the 10-day voting period last May and June, over a quarter of a million votes were tabulated on the NBC Days of our Lives website. According to Corday, that is the first of many audience-polled storylines. "It was such a success," he told me at the party, "expect to see another fan-polled story after the first of the year!"

Days of Our Lives had very exciting casting news to report in September of 2000. After a five year absence, Melissa Reeves triumphantly returned to the show and her role of Jennifer Horton. (Reeves joined Days of Our Lives in September of 1985 and earned four Soap Opera Awards for her portrayal of heroine Jennifer Horton.) "I'm thrilled that Melissa Reeves is back on Days of Our Lives where she belongs," exuberantly stated Ken Corday. "Tom Langan's stories for her will be very exciting, mysterious and romantic." In fact, watch for scenes with Jennifer and Brandon in the not too distant future. "It was great fun working with Melissa," admitted Matt Cedeno (Brandon). Was a romantic chemistry spark ignited between the two characters? We will just have to tune and see!

On an international front, this past year saw tremendous growth for Days of Our Lives with successful launches in the United Kingdom, France, Romania, Kenya and in The African Ivory Coast. Days of Our Lives won the Golden Boomerang Award for Favorite Soap Opera by the readers of Australias TV Soap Magazine. The readers of Australias Inside Soap Magazine also named Days of Our Lives as Best Soap Opera.

Days of Our (, the official website for NBCs number one daytime drama, has seen tremendous growth this past year. Housed in Sony Pictures Digital Entertainments SoapCity (, the website averages over a million page views per week. Featured within the site are areas that extend and expand what is seen on screen, including Updates & Previews, Cast & Character Biographies, Behind the Scenes Features, News & Events, Show History, Fan Zone -where fans can e-mail Ken Corday and check out information on upcoming fan events, Interactive Games, Community Message Boards and Chats, a Days Merchandise Store, and the new, popular Days teen destination, DOT-COM, a specialized character driven mini-site catering to the teen fans of Days of Our Lives.

Days of Our Lives is truly a ratings success in the key demographics. Days has been the top rated network daytime program in women 18-34, averaging a 3.4/22 this season and has held the top-rank in that demo for 270 of the past 271 weeks. The show also ranks among the top series in the daypart in women 18 - 49 (averaging a 2.6/18 this season.)

A retrospective 35th Anniversary special episode aired on NBC November 8, 2000. To commemorate the milestone, and for the first time in the shows history, NBC presented a limited interruption broadcast - allowing for ten extra minutes of story. This special Days of our Lives 35th Anniversary telecast featured highlights from past 35 years while continuing with current storylines. One of the shows original cast members, Frances Reid (Alice Horton) and longtime fan favorites Bill Hayes (Doug Williams) and Susan Seaforth Hayes (Julie Williams) are featured prominently in the telecast. In addition, current cast members Deidre Hall (Dr. Marlena Evans), Drake Hogestyn (John Black), Peter Reckell (Bo Brady) and Kristian Alfonso (Hope Williams Brady) along with many other familiar faces, likewise were featured in the episode. Flashback sequences allowed past and present fans the opportunity to relive the most unforgettable weddings, funerals, break-ups and tender and passionate moments from the last 35 years. Unfortunately, the drama surrounding the close call of the Presidential election pre-empted portions of this historical Days broadcast on the westcoast. "It was too bad," admitted Corday. "But what can you do?" Such is life in soapdom.

"NBC Daytime has been proud to be home to Days of Our Lives for every day of its glorious thiry-five year run. With the guidance of Ken Corday, the creative leadership of Tom Langan, the support of a tireless crew and a talented company of actors, the best just keeps getting better, said Sheraton Kalouria, Senior Vice President, NBC Daytime Programs.

Days of Our Lives is a Corday Productions, Inc. presentation in association with Columbia Pictures Television, Inc. Ken Corday and Tom Langan are the Executive Producers, Stephen Wyman is Co-Executive Producer, Sheryl Harmon is Producer, Greg Meng is Supervising Coordinating Producer, Janet Spellman-Rider is Senior Coordinating Producer, Tom Walker is Coordinating Producer, and Tom Langan is the Head Writer. Original cast members Frances Reid (Alice Horton) and John Clarke (Mickey Horton) still reside in Salem, along with 26-year veteran Suzanne Rogers (Magie Horton).

Congratulations to AMC's Judy Blye Wilson

Judy Blye Wilson, casting director for All My Children has won her fourth (third consecutive) Casting Society of America ARTIOS AWARD for Outstanding Achievement in Daytime Episodic Drama Casting. Wilson received her award in a ceremony in New York City on Thursday, November 9, 2000. Guess the likes of Leo Dupree has to start somewhere! LOL

Letters to the Editor

"I know Adrian is leaving and I hate that because he has been outstanding and I hope he has much success in the future. I'm trying to remember back when Adrian first appeared on AMC and what organization he was an intelligent agent for. Also he was well educated but I don't remember which university he attended. Thanks for whatever information you can provide. BTW this is a great site! Congratulations!" Wied2

First off, thank you so much for your kind words! Try as I might, my brain can not come up with anything other than Adrian was an operative for some secretive high-level quasi-governmental covert organization that remained nameless. His education completely escapes me. So, I called All My Children and asked them. The spokesperson could not name the organization either, which leads me to continue to believe that it was never named. If anyone out there does remember the organization having a name, or where Adrian went to school, please post it for us on the AMC Message Boards. Thanks! By the way, Mathew St. Patrick has left AMC to star in a mid-season replacement prime-time show called Six Feet Under. Watch for it in 2001!

"How did Alison Sweeney of Days loose all that weight? Do you have her diet plan?" BMATADIN

When I ran into Alison Sweeney (Sami) at the Days 35th Anniversary party, the first thing I said was BMATADIN was wondering if you could share how you lost weight. Ali laughed and said, "fans are still wondering that? It was over two years ago!" However, she directed us all to her official website at where on her personal "Ail" pages, she answers fan letters dealing with food and weight loss. "I hate the word, diet," she writes. "I just decided to eat healthier foods and the weight loss was a side benefit!" Learn more on the Ali Pages.

"Why is Jolie Lenz leaving GL and is her mother Kay Lenz, the former wife of teeniebopper, David Cassidy?" Grov2

Unfortunately for fans of GL, but happily for Ms. Lenz, she left the show to pursue other interests. We wish her well in her future endeavors. Far as Jolie being any relation to Kay Lenz, according to a spokesperson for the show, Jolie is in no way related to Kay. They just have the same last name! Now they know how I feel. Just imagine how many Smith's exist. LOL

"(On the Turtle Run Message Boards) what is the meaning behind member, junior member status???" skewer

Junior Members are, in essence, the Newbies to Turtle Run. It doesn't matter how long you have been a registered member, it has to do with the number of posts you write. A Member is someone who is a dedicated TRO poster with a minimum of 100 posts to their credit. If there is a really hot topic going, you'd be surprised at how quickly the posts add up. LOL To track the number of posts you've written to date, just find one of your own posts and click on the icon of the little man next to the letter. That is your "profile" icon. TRO boards track the posts in each member's profile. Happy posting!
