Hi Suds Buds:

August has been huge in regard to fan events in the soap opera world. Many of these have taken place in and around the Los Angeles area.  Two weekends ago (August 16-17, 2003), fans from all over the country – and even the world – gathered at the Universal Sheraton Hotel at Universal City, CA to celebrate the Bold and the Beautiful and the Young and the Restless.   Soapdom was to attend the B&B event, but at the last minute, it became impossible for us to get over there and we missed out on getting to meet some of B&B’s most loyal fans.  It was also nice to hear it when the spokesperson for B&B let me know that they missed us at the event.  Awww…  We plan on definitely covering the next one!

Just this past weekend (August 23-24, 2003), fans of General Hospital and Port Charles gathered at the Sportsman’s Lodge in Studio City, CA to celebrate their favorite show. The weekend was bitter sweet, however, as Port Charles days are numbered.  Some top Port Charles actors, including Lynn Herring (Lucy) and Jon Lindstrom (Kevin) didn’t even bother to attend the event. As one PC fan put it – “what’s the point? The show is gone.”

Not so sure I agree with that posture.  Even though the show was cancelled it’s no reason to take that bitterness out on the fans of the show who were loyal throughout and who spent good money to get to Los Angeles and attend this event in hopes to catch a glimpse of their favorite stars.  Lynn Herring and Jon Lindstrom get two thumbs down from me for not realizing that this was about the fans of the show, not the politics of the show.  They should have shown up for the fans.

Which is why I give major kudos to Brian Gaskill (Rafe, PC; Oscar, B&B), his fan club “Friends of Brian Gaskill” and Nina Gregersen, the fan club president. Not only did they host one of the most memorable fan events I have ever attended (and I’ve covered hundreds), but they did so with grace, attention to each and every fan who attended, and raised thousands of dollars to support the Best Friends Animal Sanctuary in Kanab, UT.  Even the name of Gaskill’s fan club, “Friends of Brian Gaskill,” shows a side of the actor and his fan club prez that is heartwarming and welcoming.  Before, during and after the event, we got to chat with Gaskill and got to know him a little bit.  All I can say is, what a sweetie!  Not to mention drop dead gorgeous, funny, and dare I say it, a tad shy!  But more on this in our feature story that includes our interview with Gaskill where he shares his thoughts on Port Charles, how he got the role on B&B and so much more!  Coming this week.

Bottom line. If you are big fan of a soap opera, we highly recommend that you consider attending a fan event for that soap at least once.  It truly is an amazing experience. These events create an atmosphere where the actors are comfortable, available and happy to mingle and get to know their fans. I think Gaskill must have kissed 500 women in an hour!  If you were one of them, imagine keeping that special memory for the rest of your life.

Coming up in October is Passions fan event.  Theirs takes place in the morning at Universal Studios in California. The price you pay to attend the fan event gives you admission to all of the Universal Studios theme park for the rest of the day. You get to meet your favorite Passions stars and enjoy the wonders of the theme park. Definitely worth the price!

For east coast soap fans, don’t miss out on the 9th Annual “Daytime Television Salutes St. Jude” to benefit St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital on Friday, October 10, 2003 at the Marriott Marquis Hotel in NYC.   And of course, ABC’s Super Soap Weekend, November 8-9, 2003 at Disney/MGM Studios at the Disney World Resort in Orlando, Florida where your admission to the park gives you access to all the stars all day for two days.

For more on these upcoming fan events see Soapdom’s Seeing Stars.  If you attended a fan event this past year, or plan on attending one soon, and would like to have your story published at Soapdom in our FanTales column, email me at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots.
