NYC Mayor's Office Honors East Coast Daytime Emmy Nominees at City Hall Reception
The 28th Annual Daytime Emmy Awards festivities kicked off in New York at City Hall as the Mayor's Office honored the East Coast nominees on May 1, 2001. Karen Wolitzer, TRO's NY reporter, and former Features Editor for "Soap Opera Magazine," shares her take on the event.
For the past ten years I've been attending soap opera events (for various magazines), and I have to admit, I still get a little thrill every time I walk into a room full of soap stars. So, when Linda told me about an event at City Hall (in New York) honoring the Daytime Emmy nominees, hosted by Mayor Giuliani, and asked me to cover it, I said yes, yes, yes!
Some of my favorite daytime stars are up for awards this year, including Eden Reigel (Bianca, AMC), for her portrayal of a teenage lesbian, Susan Lucci (Erica, AMC) who's had a great year, Josh Duhamel, (Leo, AMC) who makes you want to grab Leo every time he walks on screen, and Martha Byrne (Lily/Rose, ATWT) who's marvelously portraying two very different characters. I want all of them to win. And I looked forward to seeing each and every one of them at City Hall. Oddly enough, I was looking forward to seeing the Mayor, too. After all, NYC Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani is quite a celebrity himself!
I had never been to City Hall before. The room the event was held in was beautiful. I was very impressed. Patricia Reed Scott, Commissioner of the Mayor's office of Film, Theater and Broadcasting (I had never heard of it) welcomed us and apologized for the Mayor, who was attending a funeral and couldn't join us. I had figured that some of the stars wouldn't be there, due to conflicting work schedules, but I was sure the Mayor would show up for his own party! I was disappointed, but not as disappointed as I was when I realized Josh and Eden hadn't made it either.
On the positive side, Susan Lucci was there -- charming and beautiful as ever. And Montel Williams, who is up for an award, was watching from the side of the room, looking extremely sexy.
The purpose of the event was to award certificates of honor to the nominees, and to thank them for helping to foster the television production industry New York City. Their being recognized for their work and achievement by the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences (NATAS) in the form of their Daytime Emmy nomination makes the City proud.
After we were welcomed, Deputy Mayor Joseph J. Lhota joked that his speech wouldn't be up to par because his writers were going on strike, too. Then he told us that his mom is a huge ATWT fan. (My mom was a huge "Another World" fan.) I was hoping all the nominees would say something, but the entire event consisted of the nominees posing for photos with the Deputy Mayor and John Cannon, President of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences. Needless to say, it wasn't the most exciting event I've ever been to, but it was affirming to see the City recognize and support the hard work of daytime television industry.
For me, the real fun began when the ceremony ended. Everyone went out into the rotunda for seafood and drinks. Thats when I got a chance to speak with AMC's adorable Jesse McCartney (J.R.), who told me he was at school when he found out he was nominated. (He's in 8th grade) "My dad came to tell me," he said. "They called me down to the principal's office. I was scared to death. But I was thrilled when I found out. I told my best friend and then they announced it on the loud speaker." Jesse's had a wonderful year, going from a little boy named Junior to a teenager who wants to be called J.R. AMC fans, stay tuned. J.R. is in for a roller coaster ride ahead.
I tried to talk with Susan Lucci, but she was surrounded by reporters with TV camera's and all I had was my little tape recorder. Rebecca Budig, who plays Greenlee, Erica's least favorite person in the world, was by Susan's side during the entire event. I couldn't get near her either.
I did get to speak with Martha Byrne, who looked gorgeous. She even shared some big news with us! "Paulo Seganti (Damian) is back, and I'm so excited to be working with him again," she told me with a smile. "I'm having so much fun. I love playing Lily because of her history -- and Rose is funny -- so I get the best of both worlds."
ATWT's Lesli Kay (Molly) was also at the event, but I didn't have a chance to speak with her. However, I did have the pleasure of connecting with ATWT's lovely Terri Conn (Katie). She wouldn't tell me what she was wearing to the Emmy Awards, but she assured me that her dress is beautiful. And as for her storyline, all she would say is "Henry and I go off on an adventure." My trip to City Hall was an adventure, too. Contributed by Karen Wolitzer
Robert Kelker-Kelly Joins General Hospital
In a casting coup, daytime veteran and fan favorite, Robert Kelker-Kelly, has landed the role of Stavros Cassadine, a character presumed to have died at the hands of Luke Spencer (Tony Geary) nearly two decades ago! Kelly is known to daytime audiences for his multiple roles on "Another World," and "Days of our Lives" fans will remember his portrayal of Bo Brady from 1992-1995. He has also starred on the primetime series "Touched By an Angel" and "Maybe This time."
"The return of Stavros Cassadine, at a point when the Cassadine/Spencer feud is at the boiling point, will have explosive consequences in this generational and historical story," teased General Hospital executive producer, Jill Farren Phelps. "The role of Stavros is hugely pivotal to the current story, and Robert's talent and charisma will make Stavros' homecoming even more dynamic."
GH fans be sure to tune in as Robert Kelker-Kelly begins airing as Stavros Cassadine on Friday, June 1, 2001.
DOOL's "Bart" Stars in the Independent Feature Film, Ed Gein
Boy, and you thought Stefano and his henchmen had problems! Well, if "Days of our Lives" isn't gory or dastardly enough for you lately, and you still want to see one of your favorite actors, then have we got the perfect movie for you: "Ed Gein." Based on a true story (and the basis for such films as "Psycho" and "Silence of the Lambs"), Steve Blackwood (Stefano's henchman, Bart) portrays a hardware salesman who suspects Ed Geina psychotic mass-murderer of wrongdoing and will do anything to get to the truth. At a special April 25, 2001 screening of the film at Raleigh Studios in Los Angeles, Blackwood graciously took time out to discuss his "good guy role" in this film as well as the latest news on "Days."
Numerous friends, colleagues, and industry executives showed up for the screening and unanimously applauded Blackwood's realistic and compelling performance in the film. Although there are gory and gruesome situations galore, don't expect to see Blackwood duplicate his infamous "Days" character. "It was wonderful, because I'm a bad guy on ("Days")," he said. "But all actors love to show the other side of the coin. If you do comedy, can you do drama? And I love drama too, so this gave me the chance to really work out those muscles," exclaims Blackwood.
Speaking of his recurring four-year run on "Days," how was Blackwood able to juggle both roles at the same time? Interestingly enough, the shooting of "Ed Gein" corresponded with one of Bart's biggest storylines to date: holding Princess Gina (Kristian Alfonso) hostage and hanging up Bo (Peter Reckell) in the Paris turret. Blackwood explains, "I was the one who had the glasses and mustache on . . . going from one set to the other. (It was) so stressful, but 'Days' made it happen, which was great."
Now that his "boss," Stefano, is leaving the show however, Turtle Run inquired as to what this meant for Blackwood as well as Bart. "First of all, I love Joe (Mascolo, Stefano)" says Blackwood. "He's been like a father figure, a mentor to me and I'm going to miss him very much. He's a great guy and does wonderful work on the show. I know for a fact that there's a 4,000-signature petition going around saying don't have Stefano go. They'll recast the role if they have to, but it would be difficult seeing someone else play Stefano," Blackwood says. Not one to let the spotlight shine solely on himself, Blackwood has no speculations as to whether the departure of Stefano's character might lead to Bart fulfilling and taking over Stefano's evil ways. "I really don't know. Dr. Rolf (Will Utay) and I have a lot of stuff coming up and I don't know how that is going to affect my work. I'm not really sure and I can't guess. But if he's gone, I'll miss him a lot.that's for sure."
Whether or not Stefano is a part of the equation, don't miss "Days" the week of May 11, 2001. Blackwood returns and hints that Bart and Rolf are going to do something very bad to Salem. As to what exactly that is, Blackwood gives the "you'll just have to wait and see" look! Of course though, knowing the "Days" writers, there will have to be some humorous moments interspersed throughout the storyline. "They've had me in a dress, in an elf outfit, and they've had me do wonderful comedy and drama. (There's a big thanks that goes out) to Tom Langan and the writers for consistently coming up with clever things for Bart to say and do," Blackwood says.
Interestingly, the character of Bart was originally created to last a span of three days. "Fran Bascom ("Days" casting director), hired me to play Bart to build Susan's (Eileen Davidson) secret room so we could get rid of Susan in the mansion," explains Blackwood. As "Days" fans know, the character apparently caught on. Blackwood truly adores his fans and loves being a part of NBC's number one daytime drama. "It's been one of the most marvelous experiences in my life," he says.
For his role in Ed Gein, Blackwood studied the skill of hunting by actually going to the shooting range and learning how to use a gun. He knew some hunters and that helped him create the role. Blackwood says acting is all about imagination and then letting your imagination go. "It's like we're all children, playing in the playground, playing in the sand," he exclaims.
Along with his acting talents, Blackwood is also musically inclined. He sang the national anthem at the April 10th Los Angeles Lakers game in front of 18,000 people; Jack Nicholson, Jeffrey Katzenberg, Shaquille O'Neal and Kobe Bryant among them. Blackwood admits he was petrified, but he came through with flying colors! If you are planning on attending the Days Fan Club Weekend in June, Blackwood, along with co-stars Kevin Spirtas (Craig), Patrika Darbo (Nancy), and Nadia Bjorlin (Chloe) among others, is in the midst of creating quite an eventful show -- singing included!

ABC "Soap Stars on Tour" Ends on the East Coast with Michael E. Knight (Tad, AMC), Saturday, May 12th
"All My Children's" Daytime Emmy winner and current nominee, Michael E. Knight (Tad) appears live at the Garden State Plaza Mall in Paramus, NJ for ABC "Soap Stars on Tour" presented by EAS on Saturday, May 12, 2001. As you know, Turtle-Run supported all the ABC stars (see Seeing Stars section below) as they appeared as part of this three month-long promotion that began in San Francisco on March 3, and concludes at the Garden State Plaza in Paramus, NJ (the New York metropolitan area) on Saturday, May 12, 2001. For this last event, however, we received a special "media alert" from the network reconfirming Knight's appearance and to spread the word! So, all you NY/NJ metropolitan area AMC fans get on out there and meet "Tad," who is actually taking time off from his vacation just to come out and meet you!
The two-hour event will consist of autograph signing, question-and-answer sessions, and the "Be A Star for a Day Contest." Come on, now! Wouldn't you just love the opportunity to act in a scene with the ever charming, witty, and currently heartsick, Thaddeus J. Martin? Take it from me -- someone who has run lines with MEK. It's a whole heck of a lot of fun, not to mention, rather awesome to observe! He metamorphoses from being Mikey -- regular, normal, down-to-earth guy -- to becoming the character of Tad. Right before your eyes! For the opportunity of a lifetime, entrants get to attend an acting workshop prior to an audition, and the winner will then rehearse with, and perform a scene on stage with, 2-time Emmy Award winner, and multiple Emmy nominee, Michael E. Knight! All as part of the official program. The winner will also have a chance to enter the Grand Prize trip for two to LA or NY to visit the set of their favorite ABC Daytime soap. How cool is that?
The actual event is scheduled from 2-4 PM. For those who are interested in the acting competition, we recommend getting there well before 9 AM. The audition line is scheduled to begin forming at 9 AM. The auditions start at 10 AM. The audition process and the acting class will occur between 10 AM-1PM. Aspiring actors should enter the Mall at the Lord & Taylor court on the lower level. For further info call 201 843-2404. Break a leg, and tell Michael I say "Hi!" :o)
Hispanic Talk Show Host Cristina Saralegui and Comedic Actor Emiliano Diez Guest Star on Passions
Passions features a Hispanic flair when it includes extended guest appearances by Hispanic talk-show host and media maven, Cristina Saralegui ("The Cristina Show"), as well as actor Emiliano Diez ("Los Beltran") as they make their acting debut in an English-language network daytime drama. Beginning in July, for 15 episodes, Saralegui will portray Tia Cristina while Diez will play Tio Francisco Lopez, a married couple who come to the quaint seaside town of Harmony to join in a celebration with their local relatives, the Lopez-Fitzgeralds.
Cristina Saralegui became a household name in the Hispanic community as host of Univision Network's "The Cristina Show," which continues its reign as the number-one talk show on Spanish-language television in the United States. Prior to being named as host of her own program, Saralegui was an extremely successful journalist working for three of the most successful magazines published in Latin America, and in 1979, was named editor-in-chief of Cosmopolitan en Espanol. Today, in addition to her daily appearances on "The Cristina Show," Saralegui co-publishes a monthly magazine (Cristina La Revista), hosts a daily radio show ("Cristina Opina"), and continuously campaigns for AIDS awareness and education for Hispanics. To that end, she established "Arriba La Vida/Up with Life Foundation" in 1996 with her husband and manager, Marcos Avila, and is an active member of the AIDS charity AmFAR. Saralegui has garnered recognition around the world as a leader and role model for the Hispanic community as well as for her philanthropic efforts.
Diez, who is most recognized for his role as Manny Beltran on the Telemundo comedy series "Los Beltran," has also been featured in "Miami Sands," "Sins of the City," "seaQuest," and in the cable movie "So Be Hotel." He also served as co-host of "Mejorando su Hogar." His feature film credits include "The Last Marshal," with Scott Glenn, "Nostromo," and "Caf & Tobacco," among others.

The Latest on SoapNet's SoapCenter
For those of you who subscribe to the SoapNet channel and regularly watch SoapCenter, you already know that executives have been retooling the shows format since early this year. With the announcements that Brooke Alexander and David Forsythe had been scrapped as hosts and the powers that be were taking the show in a new direction, SoapCenter has continued to air in the form of encore presentations.
However, as most of you know, Turtle Run continues to post the newest segments premiering on SoapCenter, even though no new episodes of the show are airing. We explained our confusion to SoapNet, who informed us that SoapNet is still creatively coming up with new ideas for the show. According to the spokesperson for SoapNet, the new SoapCenter segments are now airing in 1, 3 and 5-minute episodes throughout the day. There is no schedule for when certain segments will air. For now, you will just have to keep your TV tuned to SoapNet all day in order to catch your favorite segments!
The good news is that SoapCenter will temporarily return with brand new programming in time for the 28th Annual Daytime Emmy Awards. Although an encore presentation of SoapCenter's coverage of the 2000 Daytime Emmy Awards will air on Emmy Night, Friday, May 18th, brand new episodes recapping all the winners and parties will be shown May 25th and June 1st. New episodes of SoapCenter will hopefully begin airing shortly thereafter.
In the meantime, keep enjoying SoapNet and we will bring you news of SoapCenter's new launch date as soon as it happens. Contributed by Jessica Radloff
